Overview: ONE-SHOT READER INSERT. The reader hunts with the Winchesters, and is one day struck down with appendicitis. How long will it take for the guys to figure it out, and by then will it be too late? No pairings, but a bit of friendly flirting I hope.
Words: 6091
Warnings: Some blood, some VERY light swearing… possibly some bad writing too but I’ll let you be the judge of that, lol
A/N: So I’ve never had appendicitis and all I had to go on was Google research. And you know what? Medical stuff is really confusing. And some sites conflicted with others and I feel like I re-wrote this a million times. So, it’s probably (definitely) not 100% accurate but I think still within the general symptoms of the condition and subsequent complication.

You should have anticipated that you’d be hitting the bar as soon as the hunt was over, though there was still a small part of you that hoped Dean would be too tired to bother. Not a chance in hell of that happening really…
“I’m surprised you’re not having a beer” Sam commented, taking a swig from his own bottle. He glanced over at Dean, who was currently trying to earn us some spending money with a few games of pool, whilst enjoying his own drink of rum and coke. You nursed your lemonade while trying to pretend you were enjoying the atmosphere of the cleaner-than-usual bar that was conveniently located across the road from your motel. You’d become so used to seedy bars you’d forgotten some places used coasters. You couldn’t help but pick at yours, it was turning into a good distraction.
“Hey, you ok?” Sam asked you, his brow furrowing in concern, reaching a hand out to lightly touch your own. “You’ve been pretty quiet today”.

A/N: this doesn’t follow a specific episode (although somethings are taken from S13), it’s just a stand-alone chapter I’ve written. This is the final chapter of the Huntress series, thank you all so much for keeping up with the series. I know it’s been a hell of a while since I started it, but I always knew I’d finish it and here we are! Any feedback is hugely appreciated, alongside likes/comments/reblogs. Love you guys x

6 months later
Uncle Dean had been distant ever since Mary and Cas had sacrificed themselves at the apocalypse world. You were sat at the table, picking at your food while you watched him. He was surrounded by books and had his laptop open on some strange alternate universe theories.
You braved saying something, “hey, Uncle De?”
He didn’t bother looking up, “kinda busy here, kid. Go talk to your Dad.”
It was strange seeing your Uncle so focused as he usually dipped in and out of research, leaving the bulk of it to Dad. But he was desperate. Jack, Lucifer’s son, was a strange addition to the bunker. He was incredibly sweet, but there was something off about him.
You frowned and pushed your plate back, standing up to go and read over Uncle Dean’s shoulder. “do you need any help?”
Uncle Dean didn’t trust Jack, saying that the son of Lucifer was a monster and needed to be dead. Dad had blind faith in him, trusting there was goodness in the boy. You were somewhere in the middle, weary of his presence, but you had to admit he seemed far too innocent to be pure evil.
Uncle Dean dropped the book he had onto the table and sighed loudly, “I said I was busy, okay?”
“You haven’t left this spot in days…” you slumped down into the chair next to him, “I can keep reading if you want to get some sleep?” You figured if he was going to insist on endless research, you might as well try and find a way to get him to sleep. He couldn’t rest until Cas and Mary were back.
“Y/N, please. Just go away.” He had a threatening undertone and his jaw clenched.
“De-”“I said go away!” He shouted, throwing his hands up, “go be useless somewhere else.”
Shocked, you stared at him for a moment with no clue how to respond.
“You think I’m useless?” You asked, hurt.Uncle Dean finally looked up, his eyes harsh and his nostrils flared.
But when his gaze landed on yours he sighed and his expression began to soften, “no.”
“I know what you’re going through, okay? You’re not the only one suffering here. So don’t take it out on me.” You huffed, standing up and leaving the room. He called after you, but you ignored him. You and your Dad had taken it hard too, but you both were dealing with yourselves better than Uncle Dean was.
You made your way to your Dad’s room, knocking before entering. He was sat on his bed, his laptop open on nearby cases and what looked like about 50 other tabs.
“Hey, bug.” He smiled, “you okay?”
You nodded and climbed on the bed, “you finding a case?”
“Yeah, well…maybe. Don’t seem to be many at the moment. So make the most of it, I guess,” He chuckled, but caught your blank face and frowned, “you sure you’re okay?”
“Do you think Uncle De’s gonna be okay?” You asked, looking up at him.
With a tight smile, he nodded slowly, “yeah. He just doesn’t process things easy. Probably just needs to let off some steam.”
“You’re tellin’ me.” You remarked.
“Did he say something to you?”
“Nothin’ awful,” you shrugged, only your Dad’s stern stare told you he wasn’t going to take some vague answer, “I offered to help …and then he told I was useless.”
“Seriously?”
“Yeah. it’s okay, though. I know he didn’t mean it. I just wish he’d talk to us.” You admitted, looking down at your hands.
Dad sighed, “yeah, me too. You want me to say anything to him?”
“No, no it’s fine.”
“You’re not, though, useless, you know that, right?”
“I am now.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well ever since that weird alternate world, my powers have gone. So I’m pretty useless here.” You chuckled, but your seriousness seeped through.
“Well, I’ve seen you hunt. I’ve seen you put two and two together that no one else could, so I’d say you’re pretty far from useless.”
You breathed out a puff of air, “yeah. I guess.”
“Listen to your Dad, kid. He’s right.” Uncle Dean’s voice sounded. The two of you looked up to where he stood sheepishly in the doorway. In the light, his puffy eyes were more obvious, not to mention the drooped eyelids. He sat down next to you, leaving you between him and your Dad on the bed.
“I’m sorry, Y/N. You’re not useless. You’re damn useful…I know I’ve been pretty hard to deal with lately. It’s just, if there’s a chance that we can get Mom and Cas back,” he looked to his brother, then to you, “then I don’t wanna miss that chance.”
“We won’t. But we also won’t get anything done if we tire ourselves out like this.” Dad said.
“Yeah, you’re right.” Uncle Dean nodded.
“We should just do nothing for the night,” you said absentmindedly, forming an idea in your head, “just watch crap telly and eat crap food.”
Uncle Dean nodded, smiling, “I like the sound of that.”
“Let’s get popcorn. And ice cream.” You said excitedly.
“And beers!” Uncle Dean added, his eyes lighting up. Your Dad laughed at the two of you.You grinned at your Uncle, who put his arm around you and pulled you in for a side hug, pressing a kiss to the top of your head, “what would we do without you, kid?”
—- —- —- —- —- —- —– —-
You sat in your room, hearing someone walk past and along the hallway. The second floorboard from your doorway always creaked and the door had a strange crackling sound when it closed. Your wardrobe was covered in photographs of you all and there was a cork-board on the wall for when a hunt needed some serious research.
You thought back to your first time in the room, when it was just a room. When it had been a hotel blue with basic furniture and nothing but a backpack in the corner to suggest the room belonged to anyone. But now the walls held posters of films you grew to love with your Uncle and the shelves were lined with books you’d taken from your Dad’s room.
There was a stuffed animal on your desk that Cas had bought you on your birthday. It only had one eye. On the back of your door hung a jacket Mary had given to you, in the left pocket was a receipt for when you’d gone to the cinema together. One of your hoodies was draped over the wardrobe, ready to grab and go. It was Jack’s favourite, so you let him borrow it sometimes.
You were sat on the floor, flicking through a box of things Mick had managed to get from your old house. It wasn’t much and most of it was notebooks from when you were little, but they made a funny read. About to take a break from badly drawn stick-men, you looked up to see your Dad at the door, studying the array of stuff around you. He was in his running clothes, having just got back.
“What are you doing?” He asked, kneeling down.
“Just looking through the stuff Mick sent me. Apparently I used to draw a lot.” You chuckled to yourself. He picked up a notebook you hadn’t looked through yet and opened it up.
“I can’t even read that.” He chuckled, holding it out to you. The image was of a man, woman and two children, the man wore a cape and was holding the children’s hands. He had a very illegible speech bubble.
“It says ‘I’ll save you.’” you said slowly, tilting the page so you could see it properly. Although, you already knew what it was. You let out a light puff of air.
“What?” Dad’s face flooded with concern.
“When I was a kid, I made up this character… I figured, because I didn’t actually have a Dad, I could make one up. And he could be anything,” you paused, noticing your Dad’s expression, “I figured, he could be this super kind man who always had time to play with me and Max. And he never got angry. And he never made us eat broccoli, your Dad let out a light chuckle, but his expression didn’t change, "and then I found out I was gonna meet you,” you looked up at him, “and I was like shit he’s going to be an actual person and not just someone I could rub out and redraw and make him say what I wanted…” you trailed off to regain your point, “but then I met you. And turns out you were pretty great. So I guess I’m saying thanks for not sucking…and that I think prefer you to this guy.” you tapped the picture, feeling awkward. A moment of silence followed. Dad’s eyes were teary as he smiled at you.
“Really?” He asked, making you chuckle.
“There’s only so much a 2D Dad can do,” you chuckled, “I know it sucks that I didn’t know you until like a year ago. But it was worth the wait.”
“I love you, bug,” He said softly, wrapping his arms around you, “and now I can’t imagine my life without my incredible daugher.”
You hugged him back, smiling against him as your eyes welled up with tears, “I love you too, Dad.”
You felt safe in your fathers arms. You knew you had work to do, people to save, things to hunt; a family business. But it all felt so much easier knowing you’d have your Dad and Uncle De right by your side.
As Sam held his daughter, the guilt he felt for his absence in their childhood washed away in that moment, replaced by the fact that not only was he there, but you were too. And that felt like an irreplaceable comfort. It felt like home.
