When I got curious about Nephilim and posted information about them here, I also got curious about the real angels and demons on the show. I was brought up in the Episcopal and Catholic churches, so I know a little bit about the different types of angels, but I don’t remember specifics about them.
Ancient Jewish beliefs say there are seven Archangels and four of them are utilized the most - Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. We have seen all of them on the show. I hit a few brick walls by Supernatural making up fake angels like Zachariah, Samandriel, and Balthazar. Zachariah in the Bible was human, Samandriel is 100% fiction, and Balthazar (really spelled Balthasar) was one of the three wise men - a scholar - not an angel. But I found out a lot of the angels are used on the show from different religious texts.
Guess what, though? Castiel is based on a real angel!
Castiel/Cassiel:
(Yep, this is a painting depicting the real Cassiel from what I could dig up.)
I went into my angel digging aware that Castiel wasn’t a real angel, but lo and behold, I found out the Supernatural people based him on a real angel known as Cassiel. He’s not found in Christianity that I could see, but he is found in Judaism and Jewish mysticism (like Kabbalah). Modern mysticism sometimes refers to Cassiel as a female but most of the references I saw describe him as male (or genderless like most people think of angels). Interestingly enough, Cassiel is known as an archangel, not a regular angel the way our Castiel is depicted.
Cassiel is the “Angel of Temperance” and the “Angel of Serenity”. He is one of the rulers of the planet Saturn, he is the controller of the moon, and he is associated with Saturday, not Thursday like our Castiel. Unlike many other angels, Cassiel is known for simply watching the events of the cosmos unfold with little interference. He is the angel of solitude and tears, and is said to preside over the deaths of kings. Cassiel is associated with Kefitzat Haderech, the ability to travel quickly through space. Magic spells using his name are cast to create destruction, to scatter crowds, to cause a person to wander aimlessly, or to fall from a position of power. Ancient Hebrew amulets bearing his name are used to drive away one’s enemies. The words on the charm are written with the blood of a bird and then tied to the foot of a dove. The dove is then set to flight, taking one’s enemy with it. Should the bird refuse to fly, it is a sign that one’s enemies won’t depart either. Archangel Cassiel can also be called: Casiel, Cassiel Mocoton, Kafziel, Qafsiel, Qaphsiel, Qaspiel, Quaphsiel.
Cassiel is the ruling Prince of the Seventh Heaven who appears as the Angel of Temperance and Prince of the Order of Powers. The Angel Cassiel is said to bind together the unity of the Eternal Kingdom. He is the Angel ruling over games of chance and luck, and as such can become a source of our good fortune. He is a patron Angel for the investor, stock broker, or gambler. Cassiel carries the light of the Sun Wand by which he charges the Angels to Power. He wears the turban of Judgement for the dearly departed, signifying the need for repentance and meditation of our life on Saturday.
The way we are supposed to pray to Cassiel in reality sounds an awful lot like what Dean needs to be praying to Castiel: “Cassiel, please help me as I move through this time in my life that is requiring more responsibility and moderation. Sometimes I feel the weight of the world and I feel like I can’t handle it anymore and I need your Divine Assistance. Wipe away my tears of stress and replace them with tears of joy and happiness. Through Jesus Christ’s Precious, Pure and Holy name I pray. Amen.”
Several parallels between Cassiel and Castiel stood out to me right away. Castiel has talked about being assigned to the garrison that watches over humanity, but Uriel, I think, has also talked about the garrison watching but not being allowed to visit Earth in hundreds of years. That’s consistent with Cassiel watching events unfold without interference. Cassiel is talked about as being unusual for an angel in his lack of interaction with humanity. That explains some of Castiel’s awkwardness to me, although he loves humanity in a detached way, like looking at art in museums. The other angels are far more adapted to human behavior because they have been down in the trenches with them, so to speak, whereas Cassiel (and Castiel, really) mostly watch from afar.
The amount of magic and amulet discussion associated with Cassiel appears to have been applied to Castiel’s knowledge of spells and things as well. And the part about how he “is said to bind together the unity of the Eternal Kingdom” gives me some clue about the part of his makeup that tortures him when Heaven is in chaos, and why he would try to take control.
Cassiel is about temperance, moderation, serenity, etc., which seems to be the monotone sort of unemotional even keel that Castiel is prone to as a character. It’s the influence Dean needs but Dean’s fire rubs off on him. It makes more sense now why Dean’s influence on Castiel sort of contributes to his self-destructive behavior. He’s supposed to give Dean the things that are in his control - the things he was created for with temperance, moderation, serenity, etc. - but Dean is a powerful force on his own. It’s like throwing a porcelain doll and watching it smash against a wall.
Aren’t we a little bit excited that Castiel is based on a real angel? I am!
People like to wear different kinds of amulets or pendants depicting Cassiel like these:
