Amazing Hyper-realistic Statues! by Jackie K. Seo - Jamie Salmon

Jackie K. Seo and Jamie Salmon’s hyper realistic sculpture capture every wrinkle, vein, and hair with uncanny realism and attention to detail.

Hyper-Realism, the art of making something look incredibly real and detailed, is a trend that has been sweeping the art world in recent years. From paintings that seem like they were photographed to statues that seem to be seconds away from blinking and coming to immediate life. These next examples belong to the latter category, with incredible statues you will have a hard time believing aren’t real!

Cecilia Paredes (Peruvian, b.1950) was born in Lima, Peru, where she studied Plastic Arts at the Catholic University of Lima. She later went on to study at Cambridge Arts and Crafts School in England.

She is a contemporary performance and installation artist, who is best known for her unusual work in which she uses her own body as a canvas for body paint. Her last name, Paredes, which means walls in Spanish, perfectly suits her fascination with turning herself into a human chameleon and melting herself into the walls.

Paige Bradley Created One Of The Most Striking Sculptures I’ve Seen In Recent Times. Her Masterpiece,

Paige Bradley created one of the most striking sculptures I’ve seen in recent times. Her masterpiece, entitled Expansion, is a beautiful woman seeking inner piece but fractured and bleeding with light. “From the moment we are born, the world tends to have a container already built for us to fit inside: a social security number, a gender, a race, a profession,” says Bradley. “I ponder if we are more defined by the container we are in than what we are inside. Would we recognize ourselves if we could expand beyond our bodies?”

Tiny Whimsical Porcelain Creatures

Anya Stasenko and Slava Leontyev is a duo of Ukrainian artists creating tiny whimsical porcelain creatures. Each sculpture is painted with a wildly imaginative and creative array of painstakingly detailed and brilliantly colorful designs. Given the tiny size of these creatures (most measure anywhere from 4 to 40cm), it was all the more surprising that Stasenko and Leontyev weren’t actually trained to work with ceramics. One is a graphic artist and the other is a painting teacher. They chose to work with ceramics simply because of economic reasons and because of the relative ease with which the material can be worked. In fact, they are downright humble about their work, stating that it is nothing remarkable, as they aren’t even trained ceramicists

Christian Louboutin’s SS14 Collection Photographed As Impressionist Art by Peter Lippmann

considered amongst the most prestigious shoes a woman can slide her feet into, the creations of Christian Louboutin are, for many, the epitome of stylish and luxurious footwear. For the past six years, the brand has created its campaigns in collaboration with American photographer Peter Lippmann, a celebrated still-life photographer known for his painterly and atmospheric images. (We featured their collaboration back in 2009, with a campaign that was inspired by Flemish 17th century still-life painting.)

For Louboutin’s Spring-Summer 2014 collection, Peter Lippmann looked towards European art, this time drawing inspiration from some of the masterpieces of Impressionism: paintings by great masters such as Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne have been recreated with real flowers, serving as a backdrop for the equally colourful shoes and handbags from Louboutin’s latest collection.

The Mystical World Of Mushrooms Captured In Photos

Most people consider mushrooms to be the small, ugly cousins of the plant kingdom, but theirs is a surprisingly beautiful and wonderful world waiting to be explored. These beautiful mushrooms, captured by enthusiastic nature photographers, are a far cry from the ones you find in the woods or your local grocery store.

Most mushrooms, as we know them, are actually just the reproductive structure of the fungus they belong to – their fungal networks expand far further underground, and some fungi don’t even sprout the sort of mushrooms that we’re used to seeing. In fact, depending on your definition of “organism,” the largest living organism in the world is a fungus – there’s a honey mushroom colony in Oregon that occupies about 2,000 acres of land!

Illustrator Sébastien DEL GROSSO freelance graphic designer from Paris, France (previously) recently updated his portfolio with a new batch of awesome  illustrations.

In this series “The sketch of a life”, I wanted to illustrate my life, like my sketches gave birth to each of his actions or by the intervention of someone I are close (for exemple in “sketch your mentor” with the intervention of my grandmother who taught me in the drawing), or events that have been important to me (like in “sketch the life” with the birth my daughter “Cataleya”), but also with something a little more humorous (in “Catch & Sketch” for example with the intervention of my friend Cal Redback, or in “sketch and fight” with a battle of two artists with each his technique)

Milo Moiré, A Performance Artist And Psychologist Based In Duesseldorff, Germany Decided To Strip Down

Milo Moiré, a performance artist and psychologist based in Duesseldorff, Germany decided to strip down to nothing but words — the names of the articles of clothing she normally would be wearing. Then she walked outside, down the street, onto a bus, and lined up for a ticket to Art Basel, the extremely exclusive event that happens every year at the intersection of Switzerland, Germany, and France. Along her 1-hour journey, men and women stopped, stared, smiled, took pictures, and generally let her do her thing. Until some authority at Art Basel ordered her to put on some clothes or leave. http://www.lematin.ch/suisse/milo-moire-voit-refuser-acces-lexposition/story/30876553

Bibliochaise by Nobody&co

I was just thinking how perfect this would be for my humble little apartment when I read the designer’s quote:

“Twelve years ago we lived in a tiny flat, full of books but with nowhere to sit. Problems are always the best inspirations. That same year we drew the first Bibliochaise: a cube in which to sit, with slots all around to put books in. Geometry is magic. Each time you draw a cube or a square, something wonderful can happen.”

Perfect summary. Apparently the chair can hold 300 books and (even more win) comes in a range of different colors. You can visit its home right here.

ArtSlant Prize 2013: Robin Kang - Playing With Machines

ArtSlant Prize 2013: Robin Kang - Playing with Machines

by Joel Kuennen

Robin Kang - First Place, ArtSlant Prize 2013

Robin Kang interrogates machinery. From her roots as a photographer (BFA) and through her MFA in printmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, it’s always been about how the machine affects the artwork produced and what exactly can be done within that process of translation: idea to object. Her latest projects involve two very different explorations. Using digital jacquard looms, she recreates patterns taken both from ancient weaving cultures as well as the silicon culture of microprocessors, all the while interrupting and reinterpreting through the loom. Her concurrent project, BRXL Blocks, is an interrogation of architectural space through the use of very lightweight, transparent bricks made of PET plastic. These piecemeal constructors are farmed out to agencies of production in China.

Kang’s BRXL Block installations leverage our relationship to the architectural. Installed, they take many forms: towers, walls, even extensions to preexisting architectural features. They sway as gallery-goers pass, so fragile and ethereal are they. When she began this project, Kang says she was coming from a place of industrial critique, a critique of the loss of craft. However, as she came to hold and play with these objects, she found they evoked another theme. “This other element of the object itself came up during installation…I placed myself in this child-like place, just playing with blocks again… The fact that people respond to that and have a desire to play with these objects is exciting for me.” One high-profile playmate is the Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, who has one of Kang’s blocks in his office and has been known to toss it to visitors, enjoying the surprise on their faces as they exert themselves to catch what appears to be a glass brick.

As The Eye Moves
As The Eye Moves

As the Eye Moves

Luis Tomasello, Chromoplastic Mural, 2011, bass wood and acrylic paint The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Though based in France, Argentine artist Luis Tomasello is considered to be one of Latin America’s leading Kinetic artists. Having discovered geometric abstraction during European travels early in his career, Tomasello developed a keen interest in the interaction of color and light, yet struggled with the restrictions of limiting color to a two-dimensional plane.  It was in Paris in the 1950s - the epicenter of the Kinetic art movement - where his three-dimensional relief art took form, making use of color and light reflections to produce optical illusions of movement.

Tomasello’s well-known “atmosphères chromoplastiques” - which according to assistant curator Leesa Fanning were discovered by accident after leaving a painted block of wood upside-down on a wet surface - are murals composed of white cubes placed against a white background, the resulting play of light and shadow engaging viewers as they move around the work.  In his installation at the Nelson-Atkins, Tomasello has placed nearly 700 white geometric polyhedra - the undersides of which are painted a bright fluorescent orange - along the gallery walk wall of the Bloch building. These minimal objects create a breathtaking effect that can really only be fully experienced in person. With no distance dividing them, the viewer is encouraged to interact closely and directly with the piece, and as one walks along the gallery wall, the glowing reflections of orange light against it create new movement with each shift in the viewer’s perspective. Through simple materials and objects, a nearly tangible atmosphere is created, the experience of which is completely unique to each individual viewer.
