Mad Max
Hope everyone had a happy Halloween full of ghostly seances and congress with the spirits...
The flower-child witch and her bob-tailed familiar.
This is among a set of four prints, pages taken from my new zine “Cauldrons & Casseroles”, that will be available for purchase at SPX this weekend. You can find me at tables F6-7 with Jimmy Giegerich, Kali Ciesemier, and Sam Bosma. Come visit us!
"Pest Control", my piece for the LADY KNIGHTS // WOMEN WARRIORS zine by Abby Boeh, Roxie Vizcarra, and Julia Scott coming out at MoCCA this April. No three-eyed tusk-mawed pest is a match for this bitchin babe exterminator.
She's also the star of an upcoming comic I hope to have all ready for SPX this year. That's the plan anyhow! We'll see...In any case, she's a little too rad for me to ignore.
Today's warm-up: this neon swamp grump 🐸
I had the pleasure of working with Francois Vigneault at Scout Books again, on an illustrated set of their blank mini notebooks. My theme was, fantastically, the cosmos, so I went completely indulgent with this and decked out the constellations Virgo, Capricorn, and Perseus in gleaming gold armor. My kind of project! This was a lot of fun and I'm psyched to have been paired with the talented Lisa Perrin whose beautifully illustrated set will be released in conjunction.
If you're in Baltimore a week from today, we will both be at Trohv in Hampden for a little release party for the notebooks from 6 - 8pm. Stop by, pick up a set and say hello! Event page here. Hope to see you there!
Wow! You're work is so good! I really like it. Ho do you get such great digital images of your stuff? So good!
Thanks so much! I scan things at really high res and then adjust the levels in photoshop to match the originals as best I can. It can be a obsessive task!
The Vodyanoi is a sort of water demon from Russian folklore, sometimes called the Father of Mermaids, who, when angered, causes floods, breaks dams, and drowns people, dragging them underwater to serve him forever. Victims of drowning were not buried at Orthodox cemeteries, as by taking the souls of his victims away from him, the Vodyanoi would become angry, causing drought or hail in retribution.
I created my own interpretation of the Vodyanoi for Seventh Church Ministries, a small press publisher who is producing limited-edition prints of this in conjunction with their release of Jeanne D’Angelo’s upcoming zine “Unclean Spirits.” Prints will be available September 25th.
