Aang and Sokka’s friendship is proof that vegetarians and meat-eaters can still be buddies
Big bro!!!!!!!
my friend: what’s one of your favourite characters?
me: regulus black
friend: the guy whose only source of screen time was through a picture?
me: r.a.b
friend: now that i’m thinking about it, did we even see him on screen?
me: regulus. arcturus. black.
friend: why are you like this
me: regulus!!!!!
it’s so funny how sokka thinks of himself as a very average, even insignificant, person, because literally everyone who meets him has an intensely strong reaction immediately upon seeing him. and it’s a very strict binary too. it’s either pure, unadulatered adoration, or extreme annoyance. ppl meet sokka and they’re either like “this is a god among men. a perfect specimen. I would gladly lay down my life for him” or they’re like “wow idk why but I fucking hate the vibes on this kid. I want to bully him til the end of time.” only aang seems to have a normal reaction to sokka, which is “yeah he seems alright :-)”
something that’s easy to overlook about the timeline of “sokka’s master” is that sokka only trains with piandao over the course of two days. and the second day is devoted entirely to crafting his space sword. piandao tells sokka that he is “worthier than any man [he’s] ever trained” after just one day of knowing him. and the gaang are beside themselves missing sokka after less than a day of him being gone. this episode demonstrates sokka’s value, both on his own merit and as a member of the group, but the fact that he accomplished so much and was so deeply missed after only ~18 hours is especially telling.
the way sokka and azula’s dynamic would progress from azula being like “sokka is extremely smart and needs to be destroyed” to “sokka is extremely smart and must teach me everything he knows,” but it’s also a very gradual process filled with a lot of rage and resentment and losing to him at pai sho; concurrently, sokka going from “wow I fucking hate you” to “wow I fucking hate you” (but said lovingly). also azula thinks all of sokka’s jokes are funny. every single one. they share the exact same sense of humor and this fact baffles all of their other friends so much
Here’s a concept that’s been living rent free in my mind for a month: Aizawa and Mic own a nursery and these are the kids that attend
what was sokka’s relationship with his mother like? did she, like ursa with zuko, encourage him to feel safe transgressing gender norms? did she patiently coax him into talking out his problems, letting him know that it is safe and healthy to express himself? did she marvel at his drawings just as much as she did at his handcrafted fishhooks and harpoons? did she tell him stories from kanna’s childhood in the north pole, sparking sokka’s interest in other lands even before he knew she was talking about another land? did she read to him?
when he started to become a leader among the kids his age, did she take care to watch his mood to make sure he wasn’t burning out from the responsibility? when he devoted himself to protecting katara, did she make sure he knew that he was equally important? did she say it with enough conviction that he believed it in spite of the evidence to the contrary?
when she bandaged his scrapes, did she stop him from brimming with pride over the injury? did she make certain he understood that violence and defending others weren’t what made him strong?
when he lost her, did sokka try to keep her lessons in mind even as the mounting need for a strong military defense began to take over their village? what was it like the day sokka resolved in his mind that it wasn’t appropriate for a warrior to draw or read or feel?
Happy birthday, Shinsou!! You’re going to be a wonderful hero.
I hope you don't mind me just dumping all these ideas on you, you're just really kind and I love your blog
I have to honestly say I don't remmeber how Sokka's relationship with Appa went, but they do work well together (but then again, Appa works well with all of the Gaang). And then there's Foo Foo, the adorable saber-moose-lion, who doesn't leave him alone when he's trapped even if he originally was hunting it (it's mother didn't approach calmly but that's not a surprise, all things considered). And mid-fight when Fong tries to trigger the Avatar state (2/?)
Sokka just simply. Throws himself onto one of the Ostrich Horses. Maybe they're trained to be calmer, but still. He's sort of 'the enemy' so I think it's neat how he just causally rides it around with great skill. And in The Cave of Two Lovers it's he who first climbs onto one of the great badgermoles IIRC, and we can't forget the 'enemy birds' who immediately jumped onto his head when undercover in the fire nation. Super cute! And last but not least, Hawky! (3/?)
It's pretty clear Sokka hasn't really handled any messenger hawks before given that he doesn't seem to know how it works, but the two seem to figure it out between them. I hope he got Hawky back after the war, I was so sad when Katara and Toph just sent him away without asking :c But anyway, the main point is that Sokka is great with animals! And I can only imagine that when he moves to the palace he brings in tons of animals to Zuko's amusement and the guards frustration :) (4/4)
i adore this!!! sokka is so good with animals and now i’m picturing the turtleducks congregating around him and zuko is jealous (of sokka? or of the turtleducks getting all the attention from sokka? you decide)
