Been experiencing two polar thoughts about this sceneā¦
1. There is no way Sokka is expecting to win this battle. He is the one and only warrior left in the village, about to face down a Fire Nation ship all by himself. Sokka has been the epitome of bravery since the very beginning.
2. Sokka canāt draw worth shit, and yet he sure can perfectly apply war paint on himself without even so much as a mirror aksdflj

This is an amazing essay I loved reading this so much I had all these thoughts mixing in my head and hear u are putting it into actual words. And when you said ākatara learns to use grief as needle and threadā that was just perfect! And basically everything you wrote about Sokka ššāØthnk u
Lord, this answer got long. Iām a little embarrassed about it, but I wrote it, so itās getting posted.Ā Itās a literal essay. Sorry but also not?
TLDR: Yes, the show is arguably unfair to Sokka about Kya, but it also follows a pattern where Sokka stays quiet about Bad Feelings and plays by the rules established for his character. Katara, meanwhile, grieves loudly and often, and appears to be under the impression that because Sokkaās grief is silent it doesnāt exist, which also fits her character/interactions completely. Neither of them are right or wrong, but it sets them up on inevitable collisions.
Now. If you want to join me on a cactus-juice fueled descent into madness, proceed below the cut.

This isnāt related to anything and definitely not directed at you but I wanted to vent and I love your blog. I wish there was deeper love for Sokka in the fandom :( I feel like he usually just gets treated as a hot beefcake whoās just there to comfort and/or top Zuko, rather than being a complex character with his own emotional baggage and insecurities heās still growing through. I think he grew up too soon having to take care of everyone and I think he needs someone to care for him too.
Youāre right and you should say it anon!!! This is a Sokka stan account. Okay but like Sokka is suchĀ a wonderful and amazing character. Like you said he has emotional baggage and insecurities. The boy is traumatized. And like heās funny-thatās for sure but he is not just comedic relief.Ā
Sokka lost his mother too. And then his father went off to war. Sokka had to assume the role of a leader far before any child should have to even think about it.Ā
I think Sokkaās trauma manifested in protective behavior. With Katara, there is so much anger, especially relating to the fact that her mother died protecting her. But with Sokka, his mother was killed because she was thought to be the last waterbender in the SWT- but itās really his sister. And Katara is in innate danger just by existing. At some level, Sokka has to be aware of this at all times.Ā
And I donāt think Katara gets this. In the first episode, she saysĀ
Ever since mom died, [Points to herself.] I've been doing all the work around camp while you've been off playing soldier!
Even from this line, we establish up front that Sokka has assumed the role of the protector. Heās 15. Heās so young. So young. And like as the series progresses, we understand why we unlock his tragic back story so to speak and itās just- he loves his friends and family so much and everything he does is to keep them safe. Like the library? get more info on the fire nation to keep his friends safe from them.Ā
And like Sokka works so hard and heās so good at everything he does. And heās so smart and loving and caring and all he wants to do is keep the people around him safe. And like then he meets Yue and falls in love with her and then she turns into the freaking moon. Like oh my god?? The trauma??? Therapy, please!!!!Ā
And we donāt see that effect Sokka that much. In fact, the first major time we see how it holds him back is with his relationship with Suki and itās this moment where we have to realize that Sokka is moving forward for everyone else sake- they donāt think about the events that happened at the NWT the way he does, itās just another thing heāll have to carry by himself.Ā
Yeah, Sokka man. Heās so great. Heās so well-written and we need to give him more love because he is amazing.Ā
Me: Thereās no way Kaminariās just a side character! Horikoshi draws him so beautifully!
