It drives me nuts when people boil Mikey down to “the dumb one” or “the silly one” (I’m looking at you 2012) because he is not just a one-dimensional character. He has many layers.
Mikey is such an important part of the team because of his compassion and empathy. He has a deep emotional connection with his loved ones, and seeks to connect even with their foes in hoping to stop the fighting. I would go as far to say he is more emotionally intelligent than his brothers, and every decision he makes is guided by his heart, which is a driving point of his character.
Here’s a few examples of things he’s done that reflect this point:
Becomes friends with Woody, who works at a pizza place and is able to bring them pizzas
Trying to defuse the fight with Slash when the turtles first met him, and later when he finds out Slash is part of the mutanimals gives him candy and befriends him.
Leaves Splinter when he decides to lead the foot clan because Mikey knows it will only lead to more violence. His brothers try to convince him to come back, but after Splinter tells Jenny to kill someone they realize Mikey was right and leave Splinter as well.
Holding a Christmas party to raise the spirits of his brothers after they left Splinter
Becoming friends with all of the mutanimals, even though he disagrees with Hob and the things he does
And that’s only a couple examples. The point is that Michelangelo deserves more appreciation. It probably saddens him that he isn’t able to live normally among humans, but it never stops him from making a friend around every corner.
Which is why every time I think of Mikey I always think of the quote “He wishes only to love…and to be loved.” And honestly? He deserves to.

thinking abt how in “bitter work” when sokka sees aang and he’s immediately like “do you have any meat.” like obviously the answer is no. aang is a vegetarian. why would sokka ask that? it feels kind of obvious to just say “well he was hungry and desperate,” but honestly, that explanation doesn’t really sit right with me. sokka spends that episode stuck in a hole, and he occupies his time by bargaining with the universe. he’s basically doing an extended bit for his own amusement. when he asks a vegetarian monk if he has any meat moments after swearing to become a vegetarian himself, he isn’t really asking aang; no, he’s making that joke for himself, and for god.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you read a lot of sokka’s jokes as self-aware bits that he is performing for his own entertainment out of boredom (or letting himself be the butt of the joke for the entertainment of others) everything else about his character starts to click into place too. there are definitely areas in which he lacks self-awareness (his own self-worth is a big one), but he has always understood his role in the universe—and if you can’t be the hero, then you may as well be the fool.
you know what i just realised? that katara, telling sokka that he ‘didn’t love their mother like she did’ was after sokka lost yue.
like. her brother not only lost his mother and then had his father leave which made him overprotective and extremely fearful of losing people he cares about, but then he also fails to protect his first love after being appointed as her bodyguard which only makes him feel like more of a failure, to the point where he’s desperate and guilty enough to break hakoda and suki out of prison with no backup, because he believes the failure on the day of the eclipse is his fault.
apart from aang, sokka probably knows more about loss than anyone else on that show, not because he’s experienced a lot of it, but because he didn’t get angry at the people who killed them: he internalized it.
A hoodie that I desperately need of ice cream kitty, but since I can’t have it I gave it to Mikey :3

Last Ronin AU
Mikey would be so badass in this au… and also sad T^T
I got carried away bc I think this au is vry neat
Bonus:
The mikeys!!! I feel like they would be friends
ik this has been said countless times before, but i lose my marbles whenever i think about sokka slowly realizing that he doesn’t have to protect everyone all the time. sometimes he can let other people take watch out for him too!!
there was never really anyone to protect sokka growing up. all the other men had to fight in the war, and his mother was killed by the fire nation. my dude had to protect his entire village! and he let himself down when his girlfriend turned into the moon spirit when his only job was to protect her!
but all those scenes where sokka lets slowly suki protect him...
and he starts to open up to toph and zuko...
he feels awkward abt it but my heart melts every time sokka remembers that he isn’t actually ISN’T totally alone and sacrificeable. he’s allowed to be vulnerable. he’s isn’t just valued as a warrior, as a protector, but as a person! as a friend! even just a lovable-ass idiot!
throughout the series, sokka realizes that he’s LOVED by people other than katara obviously and he cherishes it. and his journey from Lonely Warrior to Cherished Friend absolutely obliterates me. every. single. time.
