Seeing young Alicent holding her babies will never not make me emotionally devastated. Because look at her.

She’s so small. So young. Her small frame is swallowed by her infant children. You can actually see how truly young she is in these moments. She’s just a child forced to be a mother. And she does it dutifully though she’s unprepared. Bouncing and holding her children to love and comfort them as best she can

And in these moments you can see how worn out she is. She’s tired and alone. Her eyes are sad and dull and she looks into nothing as if she’s dissociating and seeking comfort away from reality.

She’s a shadow of the girl she used to be. A girl who used to laugh and smile and dream. And it was all stripped away from her to satisfy men much older and powerful than her.

And despite it all. She loves her children. She protects them and fights for them. She’s just a child forced to have children and care for them alone. And it’s so sad because she deserved so much more. She deserved to be a girl for longer. To find love and peace and joy. And she deserved to find motherhood in her own time. But she didn’t.

And I’ll never get over it.

It makes me so sad when people hate on Spider, because...did we watch the same movie?

That kid was so loyal to the Sully's and Na'vi! He went through torture and never let anything slip through. Loyal to people who didn't even see him as family (outside of the kids).

He saved Quaritch because he's a good kid. I also saw it as "a life for a life", since Quaritch stopped Neytiri from killing him on the ship (and yes, she 100% would've killed him for her daughter, she doesn't give a shit about Spider, especially in the state she was in).

Also!! He spent MONTHS with Quaritch, grew close to him in a way, had a relationship with a man who's technically his father, and you fault him for not wanting let him die when he could save him?

He didn't side with him, didn't forgive him, didn't show love towards him. He saved a man's life. Spider is kid who couldn't let a man's life be on his conscious.

I don't fault him for it, he knows his choice will have consequences.

It’s so weird how I always so obsessed with one movie/anime/game, reading their fanfic all the time, have an argument with a slanders, buying goods, my fyp is full of them but then one day I just woke up and lost every interest in that fandom.

"I didn't like that they forgave the abuela" "the ending of Encanto was so disappointing" "it should have ended differently"

yeah because how dare HOW DARE a family decide to go into a process of collective healing instead of just fucking everyone out of their lives AAAAAAAAAAA

I love this movie, and these characters, Disney where's the series

people really watched a movie about the complexities of intergenerational trauma and met the matriarch, a woman who's had her life destroyed, who had to watch her husband die in front of her, fearing for her and her children's lives, and then became so fearful that she spent the rest of her life holding them so tight and being so strict, but eventually learned that they are safe now and she can move on for the sake of herself and her family, actively choosing to break the unhealthy cycle she'd previously estabilished, and decided to paint her as a selfish, wicked monster who brainwashed her entire family and it's insane

I just realised yet another little detail that symbolises so much in the story!

During Dos Orugitas, we see a young Alma Madrigal that seemed to be cheerful, playful and even a little clumsy. The braided hair, the frilly dress and the big smiles help create an image of her as a sweet, carefree young woman who was not afraid to just be herself.

Once the tragedy with Pedro happens and the miracle is born, Alma immediately takes shelter in casita and we see her alone, silently processing the events of the evening; looking extremely weary, lonely and traumatised. She looks down at her babies. Her Julieta, her Pepa and her Brunito, and her expression changes. She knows she needs to be strong for them. She’s resolute, but there’s a sadness in her eyes that says she knows what this means for her, too. She can never go back to the woman she used to be.

The next time we see Alma, she is putting on a black cloak and leaving the room. This room was the cocoon where she transformed into a new person, leaving her old self behind. She’s become different. Her smile doesn’t quite meet her eyes anymore. She looks tired, somber. Older, even.

There’s a shadow, a trauma she’s carrying that soon takes form in the perfectionism and control that eventually hurt her loved ones. This event shapes the way she deals with challenges from this moment on, and she is always in fear of the family losing their home once again.

She became harsh. Strict. Everything has to be perfect in order to protect and earn the miracle the love of her life granted their family with his noble sacrifice.

This is an incredibly strong woman who has been through hell and came out alive, for her family’s sake. This black cloak follows her from her young years to her old age, and becomes a constant throughout the movie. It represents the weight and the burden of the grief she silently carried ever since that moment, and will continue to carry for the rest of her life. It represents the change she had to go through, putting her emotions last in order to become the strong matriarch her kids and the village needed. It represents the loss of not only her beloved Pedro, but also of her innocence, her youth, her laughter and her smile.

From the moment young Alma Madrigal and her children were gifted a miracle, she became the one responsible for the whole village. She, as the only one blessed with the magic and the one whose gift repelled the enemies, was naturally placed in a position of power and leadership in the worst moment of her life.

It’s likely she was the one everyone immediately looked to for directions right after the miracle happened, and that she had to leave her feelings behind to help other lost and grieving people rebuild their lives and their homes, creating what the village of Encanto eventually became. She put everyone else first. She was extremely selfless.

Alma Madrigal is such a complex character. There are so many layers to her personality. This is why you guys can’t just write her off as a villain or as a horrible person/grandmother. It’s not so black and white.

headcanon that Alma took Bruno's plate a couple days after he "leaves", keeping it as close as possible to the miracle candle, and she just prays.

pleading with the candle to bleed its wax unto it so that it may bless her with just one more miracle.

to return her son. or at the very least, to keep him from harms way.

because honestly?

I fully believe Alma's dreams are still plagued with men of marring flame and bloodied blades.

It's just only this time, and every restless night for the next ten years, she cannot tell you if it is Pedro she sees, or Bruno she hears — quiet as the stagnant waters rushing from her ears — slipping further and further from the woman, her sons steps echoing that of his fathers, going where she cannot.

her head is truly eleven pounds, and her heart breaks a little more as time winds itself from months to years. But she does not talk about Bruno. No. And she tries not to wonder where he may have gone. She knows he's safe. He has to be.

Though she still keeps his plate, inside an unassuming nightstand with a little bit of sand and salt. (maybe a little bit of sugar too.) a part of herself, she supposes, still waiting on a miracle of her own.

The differences between the story Alma tells and what really happens just kills me because it’s a hint right from the beginning that she’s never allowed herself to process her grief. She turns the single most horrific moment of her life into a romantic story she can tell a child. She divorces any and all feeling from it - the Alma of her story suffers prettily, and on accepts the death of her husband, who valiantly walks into certain death.

The thing is that while the encanto definitely came from love, and is a story of love - her love for her children, her love for Pedro, and Pedro’s love for her - it isn’t a story of romance. There’s nothing romantic about her holding their babies and watching her husband be slaughtered. And the very crucial detail of her grief that’s missing from the story is so Obvious in retrospect.

In the original scene, the men on horses just disappear and the candle lights up gently. But what actually happens is that she screams and her grief blasts them away, very likely even killing the men who murdered her husband! The mountains don’t gently sprout up out of the ground, they shoot out with all the power of her pain. This isn’t a romantic drama, it’s just grief and senseless violence, and she romanticizes the death of her own husband because she can’t deal with what it really means. With the responsibility of protecting them falling only and completely on her. With going through the rest of her very long life without a partner.

Mirabel knows this story but when she sees the devastation on her abuela’s face she’s surprised and heartbroken because it just never occurred to her that Alma was leaving things out, that Alma actually felt that grief so viscerally it turned to a brutal, blinding magic.

But this is a story of love - so Alma prays for Pedro to show her the way and he sends her Mirabel to love her despite Alma’s increasingly withdrawn and worrying behavior. So Mirabel sees the butterfly and it clicks, finally, that it’s not a lack of feeling that Alma suffers from, but so much feeling she doesn’t know how to process it anymore. And finally, for the first time in the movie, Alma let’s herself grieve in front of her family and can heal.
