“Well, that would make sense if he starts there because of time zones and all that,” he shrugged. “My drink? It’s good. Chessie and O always get top shelf shit, so it’s really great whiskey to ruin with Coca Cola,” he laughed and took another sip. “Enjoying the party so far?”

“I’m surprised it’s not rum and coke.” He knew that was an American favorite. “I’m not sure I’d say I’m enjoying it. I already got into one fight, already had one gin and tonic because they have no beer here.” He said with a shrug, “How about you? I hope it’s been better than mine.”

“What can I say? I like new beginnings.” There was something hopeful about New Year’s Eve and the new year. It was full of potential and hope and change. “Actually, 2018 was a very good year for me. I’m just excited for 2019 to be even better.”

image

"It’s not really a new beginning. Time is just a social construct. We might not even be living in the actual year 2018,” He lectured, “And there’s no way of knowing. So really can you be optimistic about a concept?”

Arlo stood at the sidelines, watching the other guests laughing and drinking. Not that he was having a bad time by any means, but he just needed a moment to step to the side and be a watcher, not a participant.

He turned to the person beside him and listened for a moment, a small smile on his face. “The legal drinking age over there is 18 and the man is ancient. I’m sure they think he’ll be fine.”

image

Wow, that smile was pretty contagious. Ben looked down as he caught himself smiling back. He always found it better to conceal any emotion, even if it was just a friendly one. “Every other place has a lower drinking age than here,” However that never stopped Ben from having his first drink as a young teenager. Having alcohol at events just seemed like part of growing up. “Have you ever been abroad before?”

Tate wanted nothing more than to travel and given the amount of success they’ve had in their life, most people would assume that they’ve gotten the chance to but in all honesty, they haven’t.  Not in the way they want to.  Most of their travelling had been for business meetings and publicity events regarding their book.  Those types of trips didn’t leave much time for leisure.  It was typically all work and no play.  “I tend to avoid those types of event,” Tate admitted.  “Crowds can get a little overwhelming.”

“Did something happen?”  Tate asked, genuinely curious.  “I can’t imagine travelling Europe got boring.”  The last word came out more bitter than intended.  “I mean, c’mon… Europe.  Compared to the Upper East Side?  You couldn’t pay me to come home.”  Tate chuckled, wishing it was something they had truly been able to do.  “Eugh!  Raspberry flavored vodka tastes like paint thinner.”

image

“As native New Yorkers, I feel like it’s only natural to hate crowds. I always avoided using any sort of public transit,” Well because there were a lot of people and because he never had to. He had people to literally drive him around.

“No,” The word almost came out defensively. “It has just been a while since I’ve been home. We’ll go back because honestly, I still have more than enough places I want to go to. Have you ever been?” He knew how to lie, thankfully. He did it most of his life here thanks to the virtual double life he was leading. Don’t explain more than you have to. Ben then tilted his head at them. That was a very specific comparison. “Have you had a bad experience with raspberry flavored?” He was the same way with Bacardi rum in particular.

Quinn was starting to feel thoroughly overwhelmed as he walked through the unfamiliar rooms, making small talk with people he really wanted to avoid. He had no idea how he’d ended up on the guest list, or how he’d been convinced to go to the party in the first place but here he was, trying not to sulk in a corner. He’d already seen Wren and had been busy trying to stay out of his way. Seeing the other male made his stomach twist in painful ways that made him want to drown himself in whatever the closest alcohol was.

After another near run in with his ex, Quinn was on his way to the bar when he ran into someone he felt stupid for forgetting. Ben. Of course Ben was here. Chessie had told him that the brunet was living with her and here Quinn was, being an idiot and walking right into the house.

It took a moment for everything to sink in, for Ben’s words to really register, but once they did, Quinn’s eyes narrowed and he scoffed. “Yeah, it does. Are you gonna runaway this time too?” He asked coldly.

He felt like Quinn was closer to him than his own brother at one point. Until Ben fucked it all up. When he was a damsel in distress, Quinn swooped in and saved him. He literally risked his reputation for Ben and Ben paid it back by leaving the country. It was something that seemed right at the time to him. Now looking at Quinn, he knew it was all wrong. He tarnished their friendship.

He nodded at Quinn’s comment, knowing that he deserved it at the very least. Ben deserved a lot more than that. Honestly, he would’ve run away if there was any room to. However, he felt virtually trapped.

“No, I’m not,” He replied as he wiped his hand down his cheek nervously. Ben should have told him that he was back in town. Now here they were and he was feeling as tense as ever. Ben wanted to tell him how he should’ve mentioned he was back in town but he was too much of a coward. Instead, he’d continue with the small talk. “How has the city been treating you?”

Bishop was supposed to be nice, but the feeling of even being a little tongue in cheek had long since left his demeanor. Something about Ben, standing there, pretending to even give a little of a shit fundamentally irritated the shit out of him. “Then why are you talking to me? Because here’s the way I see it, Vanderbilt. You’re attempting to do whatever this is in attempt to smooth over the fact that you married my sister without so much as a thought to her brother who may want to fucking attend. Further, I doubt you even pushed her to talk to me, or say anything, or come the fuck home. No. You don’t get to slither into my life pretending to be a friend when you’d rather remind everyone how much you’d rather be in Europe or some bullshit. Go back then. Or at least save me the act.”

image

“I’m not talking to you out of guilt, trust me,” Honestly, he didn’t feel bad about not pushing King to come home. Not when he didn’t want to come home in the first place. Was New York even considered home anymore? “If it makes you feel better, no one is invited,” It was a spur of the moment thing. Ben wouldn’t have wanted a wedding with family members in attendance anyway, he liked the spontaneity. “I get it, you’re pissed at her, but she really does love you,” He reminded Bishop, “I’m talking to you because you look like you could use some company, Bishop. This party’s supposed to be fun,” This was ironic considering Ben was usually the one who was being miserable. “Oh we’ll be going back, I just have to take care of a few things first. It’s nice over there since we don’t have people at our throats all the time.” If Bishop wanted to push him away, he was going to go along with it. At least he could tell King he tried.

Being here just made the knot in his stomach worse than it had been at overseas. He’d much rather be in Greece right now, having a Piraiki than stupid liquor. He was supposed to be tying up lose ends and potentially making amends with Quinn. That shit didn’t work. Now he just felt like a spineless asshole. And when shit hit the fan, he just needed King. Ben spit onto his shirt, trying to get the blood out once he found her for the dramatic effect. “That didn’t go well,” He admitted as he looked at his wife, “I just got pummeled by Quinn. I didn’t even know he was capable of doing that,” Ben sighed as he looked past her, “Can you please tell me again why this was a good idea?” His question was geniune, the purpose of their arrival blurred over the fact that his friendship with Quinn seemed broken beyond repair.

“I wouldn’t be surprised considering you’re already halfway there.” King chuckled and ran a hair through her husband’s dark mane, giving him a smile so he knew she was kidding. She was well used to his excess of hair by now and in all honesty, she was a pretty big fan of it. It made him look scholarly, or so she liked to think. “Well, people who make resolutions are exactly the type of people I don’t ever want to be in the presence of, so maybe we should dip out early.” The prospect of leaving early intrigued her, but these days, that wasn’t a surprise. Would they ever manage to go to a party without complaining and wanting to go home a few minutes in? “Traveling through the city pre-ball drop is probably not going to be an option, though.”

image

He knew she liked his hair and honestly, that’s what really mattered. “You’re supposed to tell me how handsome I look,” He joked, it wasn’t like he didn’t know that she liked it. His hair wasn’t really something that those on the Upper East Side donned although it wasn’t like that really mattered to him. As far as he was concerned, New York seemed pretty foreign to him at this point. Hopefully, he would be able to make amends with Quinn and they’d be back and traveling in no time. “There are probably plenty of people who already have here. At least we know resolutions aren’t real. That’s one of the many reasons why I love you,” He pointed out, “I’m sure we could find a place to eat some burgers too.” Okay, he really missed American burgers. And sure he tried not to eat red meat but it was New Year’s Eve. “That sounds like my ideal New Year’s Eve.” As long as he was with her, his night would be the best. It was so easy to be around her. “Not unless we take the subway,” He suggested, “Even Spain’s metro is better than ours,” He pointed out before continuing, “Or do you think people are partying it up down there as well?”
