10 unusual language learning tips !

i see a lot of the same (sometimes unhelpful) tips being thrown around, so here’s my two cents:

1. write shopping lists/to do lists in your target language - often you don’t learn this vocab but it’s conversational & v useful! also writing yourself notes (lil pep talks on the bathroom mirror, for example) can work.

2. buy a small whiteboard and practice verb conjugation (esp. romantic languages) or script writing 

3. talk to pets in target language if possible!

4. look for quotes in your target language - often the turns of phrase are  more colloquial, and is a good opportunity to see how things are translated from your native language 

5. find a fairly easy news headline (in target lang) and try to re-write it w/ vocab you already have. you’ll quickly find gaps - this is a good thing! (if you’re feeling extra spicy, try writing a small subheading or description about the article).

6. create an imaginary friend who you speak with on the shower, or on the train, doing the laundry etc. talk w/ them in your target lang (in your head, obvs) about your day, future plans, etc etc.

~for more advanced learners~

7. when you’re more advanced, and have some grasp of past/future tenses, buy a children’s/tween’s/YA book that you’ve already read. highlight and annotate the shit out of it. you’ll know the general gist already, which makes context clues easier to find.

8. change wikipedia settings into target language - same goes for any social media site. this can be a mega challenge, but is so good for vocab, plus you’re more likely to remember the info since you worked so hard for it.

9. write a review for a book/film/record/whatever you’ve most recently consumed. maybe start a diary of them, or just have an ongoing word doc.

10. find a bilingual edition of poetry/literature if possible. you might find you can spot translation differences, but you’re sure to find some new vocab.

anyway here’s a good reminder to read the tags on fic. if you didn’t read the tags and got mad at the author THAT’S ON YOU. NOT THE AUTHOR. anyway i forgot to read the tags on a sequel and then was upset but i did the sensible thing and clicked the back button! bc i am in control of the media i consume! and i acknowledge that the author is not at fault for LITERALLY LABELLING what’s in the fic.

This Stephen King adaptation starring a brilliant Johnny Depp is a hugely underrated psychological thriller. You will be glued to your seat an constantly question what is true and what's not.

10 cloverfield lane (2016)

After surviving an accident, Michelle wakes up to find herself in an underground bunker. A man who lives there tells her that a massive chemical attack has left the air unbreathable, and their only hope of survival is to remain inside. Over time Michelle seems to question what is true and what's not.

Sunshine (2007)

This one has to be one of the most underrated science fiction movies ever. The soundtrack and cinematography are breathtakingly gorgeous: Taking place in the year 2057, the story follows a group of astronauts on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun.

Room 1408 (2007)

A highly underrated adaptation of Stephen King's works starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson: Ignoring the warnings of the hotel manager , a succesfull writer learns the meaning of real terror when he spends the night in a reputedly haunted room

Crimson peak (2015)

A great ghostly tale by the master of horror himself, Guillermo del Toro. Starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikoswka this story is a great take on classic gothic Fiction. The set-design is phenomenal!

hello, i’m not sure if i’m mixing fics but could someone help me find a My hero academia ao3 fic.

it has dabi following Todoroki for some reason, they’re at a park, izuku and someone else is there and he hears them talking about how endeavor hurt Todoroki, the kids mention going to McDonalds?

i think it’s the same fic where dabi fakes some paperwork to come back to life as touya and he gets a house and gets custody of Todoroki he becomes friends with hawks and Miruko and the league members show up at his house

endeavor gets a restraining order, dabi wears makeup to cover his scars

rei gets released from the hospital and Todoroki finds out and runs to the train station

at the station Todoroki tells them he doesn’t remember touya much and it’s because of an injury he got while training when he was younger
