I know it's been said 100 times before, but it bears repeating: your story doesn't have to be perfect.
I just finished reading a fully published, printed book that sometimes dragged on. I found myself critiquing it, zoning out every now and then, finding some of the characters annoying.
But you know what? The emotional peak still made me tear up. I was still rooting for the main character the whole way. I still saw how heart felt, relatable, and well-thought-out the plot was.
Not every chapter, not ever paragraph, not every sentence, not every word needs to strike a chord for your story to mean something.
With all it's imperfections, your story is worth telling.
i love girls with no ‘maternal warmth’. girls who are affectionate in awkward ways. girls who are not ‘caregivers’ so much as care needers. girls who mean well but come across as assholes. girls who don’t mean well. girls who cry a lot but it isn’t ‘cute’ it’s just annoying. girls who aren’t always the most beautiful one in the room. girls who are obnoxious. girls who kind of suck but u can’t help but love them bc they really are just trying,
hey, can we talk for a second? it’s about your girlfriend. yeah, she’s great. no, yeah, I agree. It’s just that… she seems really devoted to you? Like really devoted. Almost as if you were the sole, fragile line mooring her to the shores of humanity. No, that’s not romant—ugh. Listen. Me and the girls, we’re worried you might be the last good thing to happen to her and that were some tragedy to inevitably befall you, she would tear the gods from their thrones and dye the infinite western seas wine-dark with their ichor. Do you think you could introduce her to a new hobby or something? we don’t want to have to argue over what color “wine-dark” is supposed to be
