The Dark Knight’s key moment is when The Joker realizes no one on either ship will kill each other. The look of horror on his face says it all. It’s the ultimate “fuck you” by nice, decent humanity to the cold, hard, nihilism The Joker abides by.

That’s why Heath Ledger won that Oscar, imo. That reaction. When The Joker realizes that, yes, perhaps he was wrong all along. 

He prided himself on predicting ordinary people and being so super, extra, totally smart, but in the end, he was a fucking failure because things like love and sympathy and empathy were just beyond him. 

Man, you don’t understand love, you don’t understand anything. Comic book supervillains never get that, though.
