Ohhh my fucking god. There’s genuinely something wrong with her. There’s something wrong with her and it can’t be fixed. The “Floret wasn’t a fighter, even less than I was” right after she just committed probably fifty fucking murders like it was nothing. The. SHE’S SLICED AN S-CLASS THREAT IN HALF. SHE’S THREATENED TO KILL EIDOLON WITH FULL CONFIDENCE. SHE DID KILL ALEXANDRIA. SHE’S BEEN TO 10+ ENDBRINGER FIGHTS WITHOUT KICKING IT. SHE’S DISPATCHED TEAMS EXPLICITLY DESIGNED TO COUNTER HER WITHOUT ANY PARTICULAR EFFORT. NOT A FIGHTER???
can you imagine being lisette worm??? you start chatting with this homeless guy who tells you that not only can he talk to god, but god listens to him. whatever, that's obviously not true, but who cares? you're chilling, hearing his life's story, when Actual Real Life God shows up and starts hanging out?? offhandedly the guy is like "yeah, i think god's autistic" then goes up to god and tells him he's dying and god should listen to you now. AND THEN, a few years later when the world is ending, the illuminati asks you about it. god never listens to you, not even once.
for r/wormmemes’ monthly prompt, “Trolley Problems.” I was already halfway done drawing the comic when I remembered what a trolley problem actually was…
genuinely obsessed w/ taylor hebert. like. Incredible character design. despite it all, worm is still The Best Superpowered Media. the way the bug powers are entirely integral to her identity the way she is Literally a bug girl the way she’s always putting the para in parahuman. obsessed w/ the fact that she’s a crawling worm you can’t root out and a biting swarm that blots out the sun and a cockroach that loses its head and keeps fucking going. obsessed with the bit during gold morning where she’s floating dead in the water and then lab rat’s tech lets her grow literal bug legs & mandibles so she can skitter back up the oil rig and think about how much she wants to hurt an entity which can snuff billions of people like ants beneath its heel. character who is a bug both in the sense that she’s infinitesimally small and that it is impossible to really get rid of her. you can shoot her and leave her in a burning building for dead, you can snap her spine, you can blind her, you can tear her intestines out, and she still just Keeps Fucking Crawling so she can reach your mouth and suffocate you. literally the most david vs goliath character of all time except it’s cockroach vs goliath. you can nuke the planet and she’ll hide in the nooks and crannies of the barren wasteland promising that she’s going to get back at you for what you’ve done, and she always makes good on that promise. she’s the queen of the hive she’s the monarch she’s the administrator she’s The Worm That Turns she is THEE top weirdgirl character Ever
The thing about Alexandria’s death, right, is that I’m not sure if it’s, like, possible? If Skitter could literally have pulled that off given how their respective powers work, or whether you can justify Alexandria having lasted this long at all without someone pulling off something similar. It’s been a while since I’ve read Cell, and I should probably read it again.
But I’m inclined to be charitable because of all the other levels on which it works very very well thematically. Skitter meeting (and killing) the woman she once looked up to the most, albeit at a distance and as a civilian. Skitter killing the personification of everything she’s come to hate about Authority, but then functionally taking her place as the person in authority strongarming and killing to advance the goal of saving the world. Skitter going apeshit because of how strongly Alexandria’s behavior maps onto the kind of person she hates most in the world, going apeshit because she believes her friends are being murdered, and at the end of the day, what else does she care about? Skitter consciously choosing not to rescind the kill order her bugs are carrying out before she passes out. On that note, the fact that Skitters bugs can operate independently of her, and that she’s abnormally difficult to read due to offloading her emotional reactions into her swarm, both coming back with a vengeance in a chekov’s gun kinda way. I like everything surrounding the killing! And I like everything that spills out from it. So if the killing itself does not work I Do Not See It.
To this day, one if my favorite parts of Worm is how when Taylor is first going out in costume, she describes balling up tissues in her coin purse(that she keeps in her utility pack(not a backpack))so that the change wouldn't jingle.
And then, during the Echidna arc, she's held briefly by Miss Militia, who says she needs to look at Taylor's backpack. Taylor goes Actually, It's A Utility Pack. And Miss Militia looks through it and takes an inventory of the backpack, and then finds the coin purse. And she's like Oh, A Coin Purse... With Tissue Inside Of It? Oh! So It Doesn't Jingle! and you can hear Taylor going like
old lisa drawings that i didnt quite like. but they pair well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
they should make it easier
alec would be a huuuge soyjak poster. he would say soyjak meme things out loud all the time. sending them in the undersiders group chat. it would be awful. cherish would come to recruit him and he'd be like cringe slaughterhousecels seething over based undersiderchads and cherish would just leave right then and there. to the disappointment of the rest of the team who were all secretly wishing he'd join the nine so they could legally kill him
Sorry if I'm like, reciting something I forgot I heard on We've Got Worm or read in a post or something, but one thing that makes the cafeteria scene in Worm so great and warms my heart like nothing else is what it really means when the other kids stand up to side with Taylor.
Because Taylor's defining trauma was being shoved in a rotten, disgusting locker and yelling and banging for help and, crucially, knowing that there were tons of people around, and none of them cared enough to try and help her. She got a Master power from being a social outcast.
But after her career as a villain, with every heroic act, she started setting an example. That's what changes things. She flips out on Charlotte- despite the poor girl only just having been saved from human trafficking- for being a bystander back at school and not trying to help. And she did it right after making the choice to save Charlotte rather than being a bystander herself. And after that, after risking her life fighting mannequin, Charlotte decides to take in the neighborhood kids orphaned by Leviathan and the Slaughterhouse Nine.
Who do you think taught her that? What changed from when Charlotte stood by and let some random classmate get bullied so bad she got sent to the hospital psyche ward? Who taught her to expect better from herself?
And Charlotte is the first to stand up when Taylor tells people to stand with her.
The biggest contrast between Taylor visiting Arcadia and back when she was in Winslow isn't that the Undersiders are in power and corrupt the system to their own ends, it's that, despite their evils, they fought their way through a harsh point in the city's history and helped others along the way.
So Taylor, after once calling out for help and being ignored by people who were indifferent or felt powerless, calls out for help again and the people around her risked their own safety for her because of the example she set.
so looking from the perspective of like, a random mid-level prt cape in brockton bay ~2011, right. you know marquis and heartbreaker were both villains active semi-locally in the 90s with powers related to manipulating human biology. heartbreaker is known to have a lot of kids and there's no way marquis wasn't sexually active. marquis has a royalty-themed name and dressing style. heartbreaker's power doesn't apply to himself.
and there are also these two teen capes in town, regent and panacea, both of mysterious origin (regent just showed up out of nowhere and panacea is an adoptee whose powers clearly didn't bud off the dallons'), both with powers related to manipulating human biology. regent has a royalty-themed name and dressing style. panacea's power famously doesn't work on herself.
...
I like the idea of putting my blorbos on the Infinity Train. Force them to go through a harrowing experience specially fashioned to make them work through their issues (and leave them with a new set of issues afterwards)
So here's Bonesaw! She needs to stop thinking of other human beings and little more than art supplies. And being stuck on the Train for an indeterminate length of time will forcibly separate her from Jack, so she can begin to build an identity of her own for the first time in her life.
Shallan once famously failed to convince the Stick to become fire. But how might other characters approach this stick-y problem?
Moash: There is nothing for you as a stick. Fade away. Become ash.
Hoid: Do you like stories, Stick? How about the one about Firestick, the Stick Who Became Fire…
Rlain: To understand fire, you must become fire. It’s about bridging minds.
Renarin: I see no future in which you become fire…But the future can be changed!
Steris: I have prepared 957 reasons why being fire would be advantageous for you. Reason 1, Part A…
Lopen: Women LOVE a stick who can become fire, gon!
Dalinar: You WILL become fire.
Dalinar: …Huh. That usually works.
Lift: You know what’s delicious? Toasted marshmallows!
Navani: (Gets out a big magnifying glass)
Jasnah: (Turns a rock into fire instead)
Jasnah: I like to challenge myself.
Mraize: You have to ask yourself, Little Stick: are you hunter, or are you the prey?
Kelsier: I like your style, Stick! You want to join my crew? Your job is being fire!
Odium: First, I must take away everyone this Stick loves!
Nale: I have convinced the ruler to draft a new law. You must become fire.
Sebarial: (Getting a massage) Eh. I hired someone else to do it.
Kaladin: No. This is…wrong.
Kaladin: This Stick wants to be a Stick. And I will protect it!
Kaladin: It will not cease to be a stick on my watch!
Stick: (immediately becomes fire)
Kaladin: NOOOOOOOOOO
concept: tristan decides to teach rain how to cook. rain is wary but the first attempts go well so they escalate to pan frying. tristan takes his eyes off the stove for two seconds and rain manages to start a fire. tristan, panicking, immediately switches to byron, who dumps a bunch of water on it (making it TEN TIMES WORSE). byron’s just like “fuck it, i’m out” and switches back to tristan and suddenly the entire kitchen is encased in stone
Vicky!!!!!! thanks!!!!
This took me a little too long to draw honestly
I have decided I like drawing Vicky, even if I have no idea if I’m doing it right
I just cannot believe that nightblood is gendered male. That does not make sense to me and I cannot accept that
noelle is the best character ever. she’s socially anxious/shy. she’s a gamer and has a cringe blog where she posts all about obscure video game glitches and easter eggs and stuff. she’s a lesbian. her family is all sorts of tragic and fucked. she’s got angel imagery/symbolism going on. she’s got a WHOLE thing going on with her old childhood friend (not elaborating lest this post be 5000 words). her outfits are cute. you can make her murder countless people including one of her best friends and then psychologically damage her even further by proving it wasnt all a dream like she thought it was. she’s transgender. she’s an anthropomorphic deer. she is my beautiful daughter and she is cringe and weird and I LOVE HER!
despite it all worm is good and understands trauma like basically nothing else i've ever read
Lookout looked from me to the boys. “Oh. SO gross.”
“Yes,” Ashley said, tilting her head Lookout’s way in a conspiratorial way. “Keep this in mind when you’re older and interested in your first boys.”
“In my defense and in defense of my gender, I’m not part of this,” Rain said.
one must imagine rain o'fire frazier transgender
I think it’s because worm explores identity a lot: With masks and labels and cape names; choosing names and being given names. None of these are explicitly trans coded, but I feel they capture the feelings quite well.
does worm have some sort of transfem beam or something it seems like every transfem person i know has read worm (you don't count because I dont know you but you have read worm)
hmmm... wildbow writes some really good trans characters but not in worm lmao so it's not that. maybe its just because taylor is Like That? transfem wormblr followers chip in there's gotta be like dozens of you
As far as incredibly compelling incredibly unhealthy romances go this is possibly the most romantic passage in all of Worm and I will fight with knives about it.
Before Adolin does anything, he stops to THINK:
T - Is it True to myself?
H - Does it makes my Hair look good?
I - Does it Inspire my soldiers?
N - Will it make my ryshadium Nicker when I tell him about it later?
K - Will it Kill Dalinar a little bit?
