Bakugou glared at the shitty nerd, who had the audacity to glare back. Even smaller than Bakugou, less trained, quirkless less than a year ago, he squared his shoulders and stood tall, glaring back like he had the right.
Bakugou wanted to grab him by the hair.
He wasn’t entirely sure what came after that, but it felt violent. In all honestly, he was having trouble thinking straight.
“Say that again, fucking nerd.” Bakugou dared, his hands gripped into fists. The sweat on them was starting to build up.
A sentence like that was supposed to make the prick back down, grow wary, start shaking and shrink back into himself. But he didn’t. If anything, he grew a little taller.
“I. Am not. Afraid of you.”
Bakugou’s heart was thumping. He was pretty sure that it was with anger. But he was starting to feel kind of confused about it. Baring his teeth, he found himself saying, “Prove it.”
Deku glared at him, the tension thick enough in the air between them that Bakugou was pretty sure he’d have to swim through it to get anywhere closer to the green-haired boy. There was a pause, long enough that Bakugou nearly said something else just to cut through it. Anything. An insult, a comment about the weather. Anything but the silence now.
Then Deku stormed forwards, fire burning in his eyes, and grabbed Bakugou by the front of the shirt. Bakugou raised sparking hands, but then Deku yanked him forward, taking him completely by surprise and kissing him.
Bakugou froze, stunned, because, well, yeah, that kind of completely proved that Deku wasn’t afraid of him. A war raged inside of him as Deku continued to kiss him, eyes screwed shut. On one side, anger, annoyance, rage. On the other, this… urge to pick Deku up with two hands on his ass and slam him up against the nearest wall.
He didn’t have to decide what to do, because Deku pulled away. “I’m not afraid of you,” Deku said again. He still looked angry, but there was something else mixed in now. Something softer, something that Bakugou had seen in Deku’s stupid wide green eyes before. Usually across a room, and just for a brief moment before the boy turned his head away.
Before Bakugou could say anything, Deku turned and fled.
Oh, Bakugou was going to kill that shitty nerd. Or maybe kiss. He wasn’t sure yet.

Bakugou and Uraraka. Surprising foils. Narrative rivals for Midoriya’s attention. And in the Joint Training arc, the difference between their abilities to engage, support, and stimulate Midoriya really come to a head. In an arc allegedly all about the Midoraka relationship (they’re on the same team and all), looking beneath the surface helps reveal just why so many fans feel that Bakugou is Midoriya’s soulmate and true life partner - or at least that Uraraka may not be the right partner for him. This is indeed the part of the story where a few troubling underlying aspects of Midoriya and Uraraka’s dynamic start to become obvious, especially when contrasted against Deku’s dynamic with Kacchan. Spoilers through 217.
