I don't think it is a coincidence that tons of white people started using some variation of they pronouns after BLM went mainstream in summer 2020. White people had to confront their privilege en masse, and adopting a gender identity was a way for them to avoid blame for their role in white supremacy and act like they face the same oppression as black people.
