Elephant beetle - Megasoma elephas

Here is another info-post, this time on an awesome puppy-sized beetle known as an elephant beetle, or Megasoma elephas.

Description

Elephant beetles are black in color and covered with a coat of fine microscopic hairs, in other words their body is hirsute. The hairs grow particularly thick on the beetle's elytra. The hairs give the beetle's body a yellowish colour. Males have two horns protruding from the head and another from the prothorax. The longest head horn gives the beetle its common name, since it resembles an elephant’s trunk. Females have no horns. The horns are used for defense, and in competition among males for food and mates.

In size, elephant beetles typically range between 7 and 12 centimetres. The largest male specimen, that we know of, measures 13.7 centimetres, including the horn.

Diet

For their diet, elephant beetles eat the sap of particular trees and ripened fallen fruits. In captivity, they also eat fruits such as pineapples, longan, lychee fruit, and bark from certain trees like the poinciana.

Breeding

Megasoma elephas larvae develop in large decaying logs or the ground, where the female beetle lays her eggs. Some weeks after that, usually three, the eggs hatch into C-shaped larvae, white grubs with brown heads and six legs. The larval stage lasts around 29 months, during which time the grubs consume organic matter. The third and last stage, the pupal stage, lasts around five weeks at a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. The life span of an adult elephant beetle is around one to three months.

Distribution and habitat

Elephant beetles can be found in southern Mexico, Central America, and in South American rainforests.

Elephant beetles live in rainforests and are mainly active during the night. They are also able to maintain a high internal body heat when foraging despite reduced ambient temperature.

I wanted him to be in a similar style and limited color palette to his traditionally illustrated friends, but I have no self control with my iPad in my hand so he is a bit Different™️ but we still love him.

I also wanted to make him a transparent png so he could look like a little sticker but the decrease in photo quality required made me sad so he got the lavender background instead lolll

Something I've noticed since joining tumblr is the sheer number of comments/asks trying to scam you. Pls be careful out there.

Hey guys let me tell you about advance fee scams

I hope y'all are familiar with these in this day and age, especially my artists out there, because they're incredibly common.

About half an hour ago I posted a drawing and tagged it #artists on tumblr, and very quickly received this comment.

My scam radar went off immediately, due to the generic blog name and lack of any emotion in the comment, but I decided it might be an entertaining venture so I dmed them. They asked for a drawing "of these", and sent me a random selfie. I got the details and told them it would be $15, and they promptly offered me $300. At this point I know it's a scam, but I play along for funsies and give them my paypal. Shortly, they send me this image for "confirmation" (I blocked out my email)

And they began to insist that I checked my email. I looked in my spam folder and found the following email.

This is fake. This is not a thing. And the "you're to refund the $200.00 back" is the scam. They send vaguely official-looking emails at you to "prove" that they sent you the money, then have you send them $200 (or however much the scam is for). Then, surprise surprise, you're out $200.

I continued to play along for a bit, and in the second email "Paypal" told me that I had to refund the $200 before they could "credit the $300 to my account", along with these lovely threats.

And yeah, it's silly. But it's not silly if you don't know and get scammed. So. Spread, please! And thank you very much to @mlaurel for the opportunity to get these screenshots.

Hiii! I decided to upload some artworks from the last year or 2, cuz I draw reallllyyyyy slloooowww… and also, why not? I’m gonna post a few bundles of artworks each featuring the same character. If you notice any variation in art style/quality that would be because they might’ve been drawn months apart lolll

Anyways here’s a bunch of art of one of my d&d characters. Her name is Joy and she’s a tiefling paladin. Oath of the Eldritch Hunt (from Steinharts Guide to the Eldritch Hunt). She’s 6’5”, heavily clown themed, and she has some spooky curse shit going on. She is part of a nomadic circus-ish group of quirky warriors/adventurers known as the Joyous Congregation who wander and help those who cannot help themselves. She occasionally splits off on her own personal work, which is how she ends up with the party she’s been traveling with as of late (our adventuring party). She recently has been battling with her curse stuff though, as she fears she is losing her humanity, and has left her adventuring group for the sake of their own safety. I often dream of writing/drawing stuff that dives into her lore/backstory but I never get around to it. She does have a twin brother and a younger sister who I will probably post art of later.

The lil guy she’s holding in that one pic is named Guy. He’s a character played by a friend of mine, and tbh, for the life of me I cannot remember what his homebrew race is but I know that he is roughly halfling sized?

Some mildly spicy artworks under the cut if ur into that sort of thing.

The other characters in those pics? Ehhhh I’ll talk about em later. These interactions also weren’t necessarily canon… just for funsies. At this time she’s the only character I’ve made kinda spicy art for. But who knows, maybe that’ll change.

Yesterday there was a massive spider in my tub, so I got a napkin to kill it (time-sensitive spider). I crushed it, then lifted the napkin to see a completely unharmed spider. so I did it again, and once again, the spider was perfectly unharmed. I started to panic, this had never happened to me before. So I started pummeling him. I just kept pummeling and pummeling, bashing and bashing. I was actually punching him, no other word for it. I reared my fist to see a half-living spider. Still this fucker was alive. One more set of pummels, pummels fit for a man, and then, finally, he was gone. But god, what a life he lived.
