Clark: So What Do All Of Your Sidekicks Bring To The Table

It’s incredibly important to me that the anime decided to include this scene that wasn’t in the manga. In the manga, Maomao does pass out in Jinshi’s lap after saving him from what was obviously an assassination attempt.

HOWEVER, the manga cuts off at this point, keeping strictly in Maomao’s perspective, and cuts straight to when she regains consciousness in bed after being treated for her injuries. The manga doesn’t show how she got back. They SAY how, and she briefly mentions, “wow that must have been embarrassing; he carried me back,” but we don’t SEE it. We don’t get to feel the true impact of what that means. But the anime DID show us, and holy shit.

They SHOW us how taboo this is. They show Jinshi carrying her out of the temple, after a public attempt on his life.

They show us the shock and horror on Lakan’s face as Jinshi silently walks past him. Horror at the state his daughter is in, horror at another man—a man with a status he could never dare to question—staking such a public claim over his child, horror at the fact that he could never have this level of closeness with her (as Maomao would never allow it).

Everyone hides their gazes, as is their custom when someone of his rank passes by, but the air is different this time. Jinshi is furious, he’s terrified, and he could not give a single shit about how inappropriate it looks to these palace officials.

The shot that slowly follows her trail of blood—even though it’s a small detail—that in particular leaves such a intense impression of how poignant this is for him.

Maomao talked about this scene in the manga like it was nothing to her. She did what she set out to do: she saved the person who was targeted by the attack. She didn’t even know the target would be someone she knew. But she has no idea that this happened afterwards as a result of her bravery. To her, it likely wasn’t even an act of bravery at all. She acted on impulse; she did what she knew was the right thing to do.

The anime didn’t need to include this, because the manga didn’t show it. But damn, I’m so glad they did.

I always love the fact that Obi-Wan is out there seducing everyone and winking saucily and whatnot and there’s Anakin, his young charge who idolizes him, taking this all in. You know that when Anakin was like 18 he tried to very awkwardly and artlessly kiss the hand of some planet’s king or president or whatever during negotiations and Obi-Wan was like ANAKIN NO WHAT ARE YOU DOING and Anakin was like “What??? YOU DO THAT ALL THE TIME, I thought that’s what we were supposed to do at these things!” and then Obi-Wan had to fake-laugh and be like “would you excuse us for just one minute, I need to speak with my Padawan about something”

Also there is no way I believe Obi-Wan was ever NOT a gigantic flirt, so you know he was pulling that crap way back when. Like Qui-Gon would leave the room to get a glass of water and by the time he’d come back the Queen of Planet Whatever was blushing and giggling and his 20-year-old student is looking almost too innocent and then what do you know, suddenly the negotiations are over and the Republic got everything they wanted! Weird.

Anakin finds out that Mace and Qui-Gon used to be a Thing and immediately begins trying to get them back together. He ropes Obi-Wan into it, and Yoda, because “Who would know Master Mace better than his old master? Speaking of which, let’s get Master Jinn’s old master too!” And thus, Dooku doesn’t fall, because he’s too busy matchmaking

Dooku’s going to SWEAR he wants no part of this ridiculousness at first, because he is a Serious Jedi and also he lowkey hates Anakin so he’s not inclined to help him with anything, but we all know no Jedi worth his salt can resist the lure of Drama. Also he hates to admit it, but Qui-Gon and Mace did make a not…terrible couple once upon a time. If you care about that sort of nonsense. Which he definitely Does Not, oh no, not him. He totally doesn’t even read the group texts where Anakin updates everyone on how their latest ploy to get Mace and Qui-Gon sent to the outer rim or locked in a storage closet together worked out. (He absolutely does.)

I feel like Yoda finds all of this hilarious. Obi-Wan finds it all kind of embarrassing, but A) Anakin is Very Invested, because of course he is (a tragic love story! just like his soaps! THEY HAVE TO GET BACK TOGETHER THEY JUST HAVE TO OBI-WAN WE NEED TO SHOW THEM THAT TRUE LOVE IS REAL), and so Obi-Wan will participate to make Anakin happy because he is hopeless, and B) I have to believe at least some part of Obi-Wan is going to enjoy driving Qui-Gon and Mace insane during this process.
