Notable exception to this pattern - Gavilar Kholin.
The more I learn, the more I seethe with rage. Especially after RoW? How dare you speak to her that way? You would forsake your friends, you’re comrades? You think you’re hot shit? Boy you stepped in it.
Perish.
I think Sanderson’s greatest strength when writing is being able to make you initially hate a character with your whole being and then, through expanding the world and the narrative, makes those same characters fan favorites.
Rereading TWoK’s I’m reminded of how the first time I read I fucking HATED Adolin. What a dick. What an asshole. Jock. Daddy’s money ass rich boy.
Now, after reading all of Stormlight I would probably pass away if anything bad happened to him. His whimsy? Unmatched. Style? Impeccable. Aptitude for revenge? Present. He is My Little Pony (power of friendship). He’s just a horse girl that likes clubbing and making new friends.
Same thing happened for me with Susebron, TenSoon, Marsh, etc etc etc.
Do you think stew has the same connotations on Roshar as tea has on earth?
Like do people ask for 'the stew' and get gossip? Do you think this is Bridge 4's fault? Do you think that Rosharans see the stew circle as gossip?
I do

I never noticed in Shallan’s original drawing of Taravangian (in WoK) there were TWO cryptics!
Sanderson’s foreshadows stretch so far back it’s ridiculous sometimes.
You’re in her dms, I’m in those cryptic, prophetic dreams she keeps having. We’re not the same
Kaladin, to Lirin: so I asked about the - yes, I'm alive, stop screaming - so I asked about the whole wisdom of the heralds thing and get this, Palah says there are these tiny invisible creatures - no they're not rotspren, they're way smaller than rotspren, but they are what attracts rotspren. I know right? Mindblowing
every autistic person watching this episode of dungeon meshi:
Something I’ve found to appreciate about Ruin’s writing, despite my many issues, is that Ruin is change. However, Ruin doesn’t represent the typical definition of change. If Ruin wasn’t around Preservation, if not the Lord Ruler, would forever keep the world stagnant. Ruin transforms things, this is seen through Hemalurgic constructs. But Ruin doesn’t create, invent, or make things grow for the sole sake of those purposes. He does those things with the ultimate goal of decaying or breaking things down. Ruin is decay and entropy.
Ruin creates/invents a web of information which guides people towards a situation where a useless metal kills an immortal ruler. He helps Spook grow into a competent revolutionary, with the goal of having him cause the destruction of Urteau.
But if Preservation and Ruin are together in one Shard, it becomes a force that understands the necessities of BOTH stagnation/stability AND decay. A force that understands why both are necessary in the cosmere and society. And understands how to implement them. Harmony/Discord cares for the Elendel Basin, but knows its stagnation and coddling must eventually be removed for its society to grow.
I never shared my Mistborn animatic here so I may as well post it now👍
