“My wish is to stay always like this, living quietly in a corner of nature.”

“People once believed that when someone dies, a crow carries their soul to the land of the dead. But sometimes, something so bad happens that a terrible sadness is carried with it and the soul can’t rest. Then sometimes, just sometimes, the crow can bring that soul back to put the wrong things right.”

SUBLIME CINEMA #398 - FREAKS
For a 30′s horror movie starring side show performers with various disabilities, Freaks is surprisingly modern and compassionate, totally watchable without feeling exploitative, and makes the old guard who censored or banned this movie seem outmoded. The movie was banned for being too grotesque, rather than exploitative, which goes to show which side of the rails director Tod Browning was sitting on. He clearly had an appreciation for this misfit group of actors, some of whom are extraordinary here.
