Welcome to Norvrandt is a series of posts that covers the lore of Shadowbringers. These posts will contain story spoilers for 5.0 and beyond.
Narrator (Ardbert): “Not so long ago, here in the shadow of the northern ranges, lay the great Kingdom of Voeburt. A nation with a proud history… that the sin eaters cut short. Just like all the rest. Since that time, these lands have become a haven for fae folk. Dreamers frolicking amidst the ruins of a forgotten realm.”
The History of Voeburt: “As is portrayed by the two-headed wolf which graces the nation’s coat of arms, the Kingdom of Voeburt was born of an alliance between the Drahn and the Galdjent. Ere such an alliance could be forged, however, much blood was spilled. In order to avoid further bloodshed, our ancestors established a system of succession whereby the crown would be retained by the Drahn. Each successive monarch would be chosen by a council of five, of whom three would be Galdjent of noble houses. Thus did the two-headed wolf arise to rule the northern lands of Norvrandt.”
Leather-bound Tome: “On the occasion of the three-hundredth year of the founding of Voeburt, a grand celebration was held in Gruenes Licht. No expense was spared. Over the course of the festivities, guests were lavishly feasted and regaled with wondrous performances. Yet amidst all the pomp and pageantry, naught was more stirring than the recitation of the oath of the covenant. In honor of the alliance between Drahn and Galdjent, upon which the kingdom was built, representatives of each race took to the podium. ‘Twas a sight to draw tears from all who looked on.”
Voeburt Gold Piece: “Currency minted by the Kingdom of Voeburt.”
Big-eye: “This fish was once a fixture on the dining tables of Voeburt, oft served stewed with a heady mix of aromatic herbs and spices. Whether this was in order to complement the fish’s strong, sulfurous taste, or to mask it, is a matter for the historians.”
Ardbert: “That’s the royal capital of the Kingdom of Voeburt down there. It’s seen better days. They were a stubborn lot, the Voeburtites. Set in their ways. But once you got to know them, you couldn’t find a more welcoming people. It always froze over in winter, being up in the mountains. So we’d pull up our chairs round the fire and trade tales over steaming bowls of lamb stew, while the street lamps burned hot and bright outside…”
Moren: “After stopping the Flood, the mysterious maiden vanished without a trace. But fifteen years later, her name would unexpectedly reappear in the annals of history. When sin eaters laid ruin to the Kingdom of Voeburt, a young girl was discovered who was immune to the creatures’ blighted touch. …One with hair of spun gold and eyes of clearest sapphire. She was hailed as the Oracle reborn and came to likewise be called Minfilia.”
Ys Gyuf: “Back then the castle wasn’t called Lyhe Ghiah. The Voeburtites built it, and they named it Gruenes Licht. It was their last bastion in the struggle against sin eaters. And now they’re gone, all of them. Nobles and knights and commonfolk alike…”
Soft-spoken Nu Mou: “Lest you wonder, that leafman was once a knight of Voeburt. A valiant soul who remained to protect the castle from sin eaters while others fled around him. While he fought bravely, he was ultimately wounded by a creature with the touch. But ere he could turn into a monster, a pixie transformed him into a leafman.
Callous though they can be, pixies can understand the desire to protect one’s home. That’s why they took pity on the knight and spared him a fate worse than death. I was there too. But frozen by fear as I was, I could do naught but watch. Ashamed, I swore to the knight that, one day, I will find a way to cure him. Until that day comes, I look after his sword, ensuring that it’s always ready for his use again. To be sure, I could have as easily taken the sword back myself, but I wanted you to know of the knight and his sacrifice. He also would’ve enjoyed the company of a fellow mortal, I believe.”
