The Bats Of Pokémon Through The Eyes Of A Bat Nerd (who Also Used No References So They're A Tiny Bit

The bats of Pokémon through the eyes of a bat nerd (who also used no references so they're a tiny bit iffy)

Forgot to bring my tablet so I'm playing with dad's rainbow markers and pens. I kinda dig it actually but my phone cannot take proper photos of them lol

Nerdy stuff about design choices and lots of bat facts under the cut if you're interested in that!

Zubat is mainly modelled after Vespertillionidae and Natalidae species, inheriting both families' pointy faces and dense fur that often covers their eyes, making them appear blind (except zubat actually is blind). Their wings are broad, more akin to a Megadermatidae species, which was just a choice based off of the original design. Broader wings allow for increased manoeuvrability at the cost of speed in real species. Their legs are long and spindly, another trait borrowed from Natalidae.

Golbat still has zubat's woolly fur to keep its rounded appearance but has narrower wings as well as stumpy ears and a large mouth, all traits gleaned from free-tailed bats, the latter a trait specifically of the genus Otomops. They really do look like that sometimes yes. Its large feet are borrowed from the fish-eating myotis (Myotis vivesi) who frankly has even bigger feet than this guy. Bats are wacky lol

Crobat has a mostly furred face similar to Pteropid, Rhinolophid or Phyllostomid bats. Its ears are more fantasy and not modelled after any existing species. I had hairy-tailed bats of the genus Lasiurus on the mind while interpreting the little tufts on its bum, here they're meant to be fluff hanging off the uropatagium. It has very narrow wings similar to Molossid bats, and it fits for such a speedy Pkmn! (Fun fact: a Molossid bat was the fastest recorded vertical flight of any animal)

Woobat is inspired by Desmodus species, more commonly known as vampire bats. While their cousins the Honduran white bat (Ectophylla albus) is more commonly the interpretation, I chose Desmodus instead for its flat, heart-shaped noses and similar dental structure. The excess in fur is more attributed to the same families as in zubat, but with some more Lasiurine influence.

Swoobat's choice in inspiration was pretty obvious to me at first: the heart-nosed bat (Cardioderma cor)! The furred face and ears joined at the base is indeed inspired by Megadermatid bats but otherwise it has probably the most mixed influences of all these designs. I once again took the flat, heart-shaped nose from Desmodus species like I did with its pre-evo, and then its tail was adapted from Rhinopoma species (fittingly known as mouse-tailed bats!) as well as Molossid (free-tailed) bats. From an entirely nerdy perspective swoobat is easily my favorite, it really highlights a lot of chiropteran diversity whether intentional or not.

Noibat has joined ears like swoobat, inherited from Megadermatid bats (and sometimes Molossids) and is the first to have an actual nose-leaf, partially influenced by trident bats of the genus Asellia. I was kind of imagining that the bare patch between the tufts of black fur were present because they housed scent glands like in Emballonurid (sac-winged) bats who have similar bald patches. (I don't know a ton about Emballonurid bats unfortunately, so I'm not sure whether this is a family-wide occurrence or attributed to certain genii, lol. If anybody knows feel free to tell! I think some Molossids have scent glands too so heck throw them in as well)

Noivern is easily the most fantastical of the bunch, more dragon than bat, but it wouldn't feel right not to include him. He's got the same design choices on the face that its pre-evolution has (joined ears and nose-leaf) but otherwise doesn't have any more specific influences in batty terms. However, I turned the tragus into that little protrusion under the ear of the original design which I thought was kind of clever ;)

Any Woobat/Swoobat facts? <3

I already did Swoobat facts, but I haven't done Woobat yet!

Woobat Facts

Any Woobat/Swoobat Facts?

-The scientific name for Woobat is "Cardilorus Chiroptera" which roughly translates to "Courting-heart bat"

-Like their scientific name suggests, Woobat are chiropterans, and their closest relatives are Zubat

-It's a common misconception that Chiropterans don't bump into each other in the dark. That isn't true. Zubat bump into each other constantly when they're not using their echo location. But, Woobat bump into each other a lot less in larger colonies. Researchers believe that it is their psychic abilities allowing them to sense the other Woobat easier

-It's also a common misconception that Woobat don't have eyes, however, this isn't the case. Woobat have beady little eyes under their fur, but they dint have very good eyesight, so they instead use echo location and psychic abilities to navigate their surroundings

-It was a common belief in Unova and Galar that the heart-nose that Woobar has is good luck. In Unova, it's still a common practice to try and get a Woobat to stamp something in order to bring good fortune to thst item, so many people will try to have a Woobat stamp their forehead in hand. In Galar though, this belief made people in Galar hunt Woobat in order to take their nose

-Woobat crossbreeds are very common since Woobat aren't at all picky with their mates

-Woobat sleep by sticking their suction-cupped noses to a surface and sticking there. They always leave a heart-shaped mark when they are done. When it's cold, Woobat will huddle close together to keep warm. It makes them look like a giant ball off fluff, and leaves a clump of heart-stamps wherever they slept

Any Woobat/Swoobat Facts?

-Woobat live in large colonies in either caves or forests. The ones I. Galar are more likely to be found in caves (I think it was to avoid being hunted)

-When a male Woobat courts another pokemon, they will bring them food, flutter around them, and emit ultrasonic waves from his nose

-While Woobat shoot their psychic powers through their nose, their psychic abilities don't come from their nose. Their psychic abilities come from a part of their brain known as the psycholobe, but they just shoot the beam through their nose bcuz it's there

-Some old civilizations mistook Woobata for baby goblins. I blame Swoobat'a appearance for that

-Despite bats like Zubat and Noinar hibernating, Woobat and Swoobat do not hibernate. Instead, they'll gain a lot of fluff and fat during the winter and scrounge for the food they can

-While many people find Woobat and their antics annoying, Woobat are actually very good for the environment. They eat pests, and their waste is good fertilizer. Many farmers enjoy Woobat a lot, and some farmers will purposely try to attract woobat to their farms

murderfloof rolled a 1 on that check, lol bat's definitely caught red-han-... red-chested? red-faced? red all over, really.

exceptionally creepy. terrifying. (great work!) ... TUC had zero flier antagonists. closest to such could be Ajax, I guess? but, like, that dude got zero characterization other than 'nobody likes him' and being Solovet's bond.

so,, why not have a floof-flier be a malevolent bitch? albeit not to the same scale as the other malevolent bitch that affected damn near everyone in the North American Eastern Seaboard region of the Underland with their machinations, and 'just' limited to those that she might encounter by roaming around.

Hoary bat but underland. Maybe hiding a body beneath her. hoaries sometimes kill and eat smaller bats irl. jus surreptiously extretching her wing to conceal a bloody hand, foot, or limb. expression of who, me?~

dunno name. Who was the Greek bloke with the carnivorous horses? Sisyphus? Typhon? Could be selffulfilling prophecy, girl got a rotten name, shunned for rotten name, succumbed to inner demons or malign thoughts because everybody expected the worst from her so why not?

Possibly unrepentant manipulator. Exploits lack of knowledge or innocent assumptions. Missing people? Oh drat the gnawers got them.

Hoary Bat But Underland. Maybe Hiding A Body Beneath Her. Hoaries Sometimes Kill And Eat Smaller Bats

You always ask me to draw such depressing bats 😢

Disturbing image under the cut, you were warned

Hoary Bat But Underland. Maybe Hiding A Body Beneath Her. Hoaries Sometimes Kill And Eat Smaller Bats

Krita always de-saturates stuff when I export it (yes I've seen that srgb post going around, no the fix suggested didn't work), so I have to manually re-add the saturation after export. I hope I got the caught in the act feigned innocence expression right. To make the bats as expressive as they are in the books I have to give them binocular vision, larger eyes, and usually brows and eyelashes. It kinda makes them look 30% dog 70% bat. I hope the fur patterns and colors still make the species recognizable.

after accidentally on purpose scoundrelposting for like 7 hours straight yesterday i feel like it's vital to remind the class that despite all of their horrors and drama they ARE destined to turn into this thing.

they are 3 inches big. they have goofy little eyes. they prey heavily on moths. their lifespan is 2 years long and they are extremely vulnerable to death by wind turbine. just something to keep in mind here

The way the first vespertilionidae (I think... Chalinolobus dwyeri? Or Saccolaimus flaviventris? it doesn't have the frosted tips of Lasionycteris noctivagans, nor the ears of Molossidae sp., and the bat's ventral surface is not visible...) is scrambling, I hypothesize my first/immediate response would probably be 'eek, spider!' followed by opening the distance in whatever direction the critter isn't heading towards. This hypothetical reaction would not apply to #2 bat's movements due to the position of the wings interfering with pattern recognition of 'freaking huge spider'. Wouldn't be long before that reaction shifts to 'oh, it's a bat' followed by impromptu escort mission. protect lil'friend from cats, or humans that might have... less than positive feelings/intentions towards chiroptera.

Outside of such contemplative musings; aww, the lil'bats! Can't ID #2 as it could be any number of brown bat species (or Lasiurus seminolus).

Such adorable lil'dudes. sorta wishin' one could pick them up so they wouldn't be vulnerable on the ground but alas bats are disease/virii reservoirs and doing so without significant/adequate PPE is a very bad idea.

To be denied by the cat distribution system is a terrible thing.

I’ve never heard a cat scream like that😭

PSA: Microbats would be terrible pets. It's a scientifically proven fact they don't have a long lifespan in captivity (although, tbh, with current bat mortality rates in the Holocene, that's not *entirely* true anymore). Most bats are colonial, and humans will not be able to give them adequate social attention to the same rate that they would have in the wild... and then there's the diet to factor in. If they're insectivorous, you'll very likely be unable to meet their dietary requirements. Frugivorous bats would be substantially easier in this regard. Carnivorous bats... hope ya like raising chickens! And you'll need a lot of them. And you can't give the chickens any antibiotics or anything, they have to be all-natural meat, so, that's now a potential bird flu? reservoir.

yall i want a pet bat so bad you don’t even understand

bla bla bla rabies

...Made all the more heart-wrenching by how borderline hopeless the future of chiroptera is. Between significant heat events frying megabat/flying fox camps in Australia, white nose syndrome wiping out significant numbers of (certain species of) cave-dwelling bats in North America, and wind farms killing thousands of bats (hundreds of thousands in regards to a certain species; Aeorestes cinereus) per year, a cull that could be drastically - and readily - reduced in mortality if certain protocols were implemented. (Unfortunately, it seems that the hoaries of the American supercontinent are doomed to be sacrificed to the dollar by the wind-energy sector.)

Eyes full of hope, yet little of that remains in the world. And not just for these lil'fluffy nuggets.
