'Her Majesty led this strange orchestra' by Rosina Emmet Sherwood, 1888.
I’m so grateful for Etoile for refusing to glamorize or melodramatize artistic careers, ESPECIALLY for the managment. Perf arts management is NOT easy. Do you see the way life will throw a hundred fucking problems in jack mcmillans face while he runs this shitshow? That’s barely even comedic exaggeration of the real deal, and he’s in one of the BIG companies, the better funded companies! And it’s still hard as hell! But this man just sits down, and the moment he sees the little baby dancers in class, the old ballets replaying on the tv screen, and he remembers what he’s fighting for? he sees that and he gets up and just keeps going. There are people like that behind the scenes all over the fucking world fighting to keep what they love alive. Some of them are artists that had to let go of their dreams so that the next generation would still have a stage to dream on. It’s a thankless job, it’s a vocation and it’s hard as hell and I cannot express how grateful I am to them. I have mentors and friends who I watch going through the struggle of putting on productions over and over and over again for seats that are never full. As a performer, to see that same everyday struggle on screen just made me appreciate them all over again. Perf Arts people I love you keep fighting.
