My new vignette illustration for LA NACION’s Ideas section (an Argentine daily newspaper) 30/08/2015 I have drawn it for the article about museums and their mission. What do we mean when we say “museum”? Today, museums have turned into places of experimentation, entertainment, shopping, education and appreciation of other forms of art. © GOSIA HERBA 2015

The Company That Makes Legos Has Landed At The Center Of A Social-media Firestorm After Chinese Artist

The company that makes Legos has landed at the center of a social-media firestorm after Chinese artist Ai Weiwei complained that it refused to supply a bulk order of the toy bricks for his art.

Ai said he wanted to use the bricks for an exhibition on free speech at Australia’s National Gallery of Victoria. The museum attempted to place an order but was told by the company that it “cannot approve the use of Legos for political works."A post on Ai’s Instagram account said:

"As a powerful corporation, Lego is an influential cultural and political actor in the globalized economy with questionable values. Lego’s refusal to sell its product to the artist is an act of censorship and discrimination.”

A free-speech advocate who was imprisoned by the Chinese government, Ai suggested that Lego was acting under pressure from authorities. The privately held Danish company recently announced that a Legoland theme park will open in Shanghai.

In response, fans of the artist flooded Twitter and Instagram with offers of Legos, and Ai said he was setting up drop-off points for donations. He also posted a picture of Legos that had been left inside a car on a street in Berlin, where he is serving as a visiting professor at the University of the Arts.

http://smile.amazon.com/Kissinger-1923-1968-Idealist-Niall-Ferguson/dp/1594206538/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1443645949&sr=8-1

The definitive biography of Henry Kissinger, based on unprecedented access to his private papers No American statesman has been as revered or as reviled as Henry Kissinger. Once hailed as “Super K”—the “indispensable man” whose advice has been sought by every president from Kennedy to Obama—he has also been hounded by conspiracy theorists, scouring his every “telcon” for evidence of Machiavellian malfeasance. Yet as Niall Ferguson shows in this magisterial two-volume biography, drawing not only on Kissinger’s hitherto closed private papers but also on documents from more than a hundred archives around the world, the idea of Kissinger as the ruthless arch-realist is based on a profound misunderstanding. The first half of Kissinger’s life is usually skimmed over as a quintessential tale of American ascent: the Jewish refugee from Hitler’s Germany who made it to the White House. But in this first of two volumes, Ferguson shows that what Kissinger achieved before his appointment as Richard Nixon’s national security adviser was astonishing in its own right. Toiling as a teenager in a New York factory, he studied indefatigably at night. He was drafted into the U.S. infantry and saw action at the Battle of the Bulge—as well as the liberation of a concentration camp—but ended his army career interrogating Nazis. It was at Harvard that Kissinger found his vocation. Having immersed himself in the philosophy of Kant and the diplomacy of Metternich, he shot to celebrity by arguing for “limited nuclear war.” Nelson Rockefeller hired him. Kennedy called him to Camelot. Yet Kissinger’s rise was anything but irresistible. Dogged by press gaffes and disappointed by “Rocky,” Kissinger seemed stuck—until a trip to Vietnam changed everything. The Idealist is the story of one of the most important strategic thinkers America has ever produced. It is also a political Bildungsroman, explaining how “Dr. Strangelove” ended up as consigliere to a politician he had always abhorred. Like Ferguson’s classic two-volume history of the House of Rothschild, Kissinger sheds dazzling new light on an entire era. The essential account of an extraordinary life, it recasts the Cold War world.

Lady in gold : the extraordinary tale of Gustav Klimt’s masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer / by Anne-Marie O'Connor

Contributor to the Washington Post Anne-Marie O’Connor brilliantly regales us with the galvanizing story of Gustav Klimt’s 1907 masterpiece—the breathtaking portrait of a Viennese Jewish socialite, Adele Bloch-Bauer. The celebrated painting, stolen by Nazis during World War II, subsequently became the subject of a decade-long dispute between her heirs and the Austrian government.

It’s Sukkot time by Oliver Hammond Via Flickr: Time for a break from the parade of destruction. If you’re Jewish, Sukkot means that you’re supposed to take your meals and play host to visitors inside a small outdoors hut. In Minnesota in late Sept/Oct, that can be a bitch. Coindidentally, this year Ramadan overlaps with the Yamim Noraim, which Sukkot is part of. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating or drinking or generally doing anything enjoyable between sunrise and sunset. Fortunately, Autumn daylight in Minnesota is fairly short-lived.

חג סוכות שמח לכולם! 🌿🍋 I hope everyone is having a great Sukkot, and getting time to relax in their Sukkah (the struggles of living in an apartment are real during this holiday 😭😭). But I’m excited to go visit other people and their sukkahs they built, it’ll be fun! I hope everyone has had a meaningful Jewish holiday season (the holidays never seem to end, neither does the food). And I hope everyone gets a nice start to the cool October weather! I know I’ve missed it.

Darkcho Is An Album Of #mystical #Hasidic Music, That Sounds More Like An #indie #folk #rock Album With

Darkcho is an album of #mystical #Hasidic music, that sounds more like an #indie #folk #rock album with tradition than what you would expect of a #religious album. The music is very real, very #meditative and very very #human. A #physical copy of this #record is hard to find. As we look at the art we see how #mysterious it all is. Hand written lyrics and notes cover the panels, but there is no label, there is no #website, there is no way of finding out any more information and to top it all off, when you flip the cover over you read these fascinating words: “These songs collected here belong to the Jewish people. They originate from #holiness. They speak of self nullification and redemption, the need for healing and discovering the depths of the #Holy #One #Blessed Be He in this #world and the next. We take no recognition for any part of the material, lest the actual performing of the music itself.“

We couldn’t let the album not be heard, so we have put together a digital release with a new painting by the #singer, in order to ensure that the #world hears it, aged in the barrels of #Eastern #European folklore and steeped in centuries of #Jewish #musical #tradition. The album plays like a #Tarantino #soundtrack to the #deepest, most #spiritual moments of #life; full of depth and #style, antiquity and #freshness.

BEIGEL BAKE - DAMORIE

If you ever spot a line outside of an eating establishment while walking down Brick Lane, you are most likely approaching a piece of history in the area called Beigel Bake. Without the line of people standing outside of it or the crowd within, it would be easy to miss this beloved bakery due to its simple banner and interior design, but what Beigel Bake lacks in these areas, it makes up for it with its tasty, freshly baked bagels, or in this case beigels. Maybe the restaurant’s simple design has to do with the fact that it is one of London’s oldest bagel shops, which blends in with the air of nostalgia that fits many of the shops in Brick Lane. Whatever it is, it’s obvious that Beigel Bake is enormously popular in this area. The bakery opened in the neighborhood in the 1970s, while there was still some Jewish people living in Brick Lane. Although the area is now populated by Bangladesh immigrants, Beigel Bake is a reminder of the once massive Jewish presence Brick Lane had. What makes Beigel Bake so great is not only its fresh bagels or the fact that it is open 24 hours but its the variety in which they serve them that makes them unique. The fact that their most popular dish is a bagel with salmon and cream cheese makes this all true. So if you’re having a bagel craving stop at Beigel Bake but get there early because there will most likely to be a line.

“This tragic and appalling story emerges well from this volume. It is a most important contribution to a little-known aspect of the genocide of the Jewish people during the Second World War and will become the standard work on the subject, illustrating clearly the whole character of the Romanian genocide.”
