For anyone who doesn't live with children or watch cartoons on a regular basis, Nickelodeon went off the air for 8 minutes and 46 seconds today. During that time, instead of playing shows or commercials, there was a Nickelodeon orange background with scrolling and repeating messages about racial equality, the right to education, and the right to be safe from harm and hatred.

For those who aren't aware, as I wasn't until I googled it, 8 minutes and 46 seconds was the exact amount of time that George Floyd was pinned on the ground.

There's nothing subtle about this and I'm just. Shocked. In a good way of course, I've just never seen this sort of rallying behind a race-based social movement.

i see a lot of non black people expressing sadness and concern over target burning down. it’s fucking vile that some people are more worried about a massive corporation than BLACK LIVES. they don’t even have any arguments to make against the looting. the company has insurance on all their fucking merchandise and the location, if that’s what they’re so worried about.

if you ignore the inhumane treatment of black people at the hands of police and focus on ‘moral issue’ of looting instead, rot in hell. we need to use our platforms and privilege to support and uplift black voices. i do not want to see any more people detracting and distracting from the discussion by defending a fucking retail giant.
