DEMO [To be announced...]
Finally, I look up at the looming prison ahead of me. High, black-stoned walls are covered in ice and snow while two high spires jut into the clouds on the farthest corners. It’s huge, and seems to go on forever- but that thought only makes me tremble in fear. An endless place of pain and torture, and we are walking right towards it…
The gates slowly open, metal screeching and clunking as the frozen chains work to pull the heavy iron. There are 6 guards lined up outside the gates, their hands on their weapons as if any of us would try and step out of line.
We all shamble into the outer courtyard; the centerpiece, of which, is a dark gray statue of the twin Goddess and God, Ruka and Rune. They stare down at us with matching expressions of hardened acceptance… an acceptance that we defiled their world with use of magic, that which only they can use.
You were ripped away from your home, your life- all because you were accused of using magic. Sent away on carriages, bursting full of others like you, being brought to Kenneski Prison. It’s a prison made specifically to hold those that can wield magic, making it so you are powerless. It’s a death sentence for most that go there.
But not for you.

Halson ‘Hal’ Bennett [Male] 29 years old Height- 6’2’’ Eye/c- Icy blue Hair/c- Dark brown INFO- Hal is not only known for being a magic user- but one who uses dark magic. More specifically, necromancy. He is from a noble family, and it is definitely strange that his family didn't bother with the accusations against him. He claims there was a reason he was learning about necromancy, but he never actually performed any of its rituals. He is kind, but can sometimes have an ‘air of nobility’ about himself, and he seems to be rather useless when it comes to knowledge about some everyday things. [Like- things that his servants usually did for him.]
Sazora Clarano [Female] 25 years old Height- 5’5’’ Eye/c- Dark brown- glows white/lavender when she uses her magic Hair/c- Black INFO- Sazora is a thief from the major city of Evandore. She belongs to a guild of thieves named The Fulgur Clan. She was caught when a heist went wrong, and she was caught while using her speciality- lightning magic. Although lightning magic is really difficult to control, she has somehow mastered it enough for it all to work in her favor. Until she’s collared at Kenneski prison. But her magic isn’t the only thing she’s mastered- she was a thief for a reason. She’s smart and cunning, sly like a fox, but she does sometimes let her temper get the best of her.
Roman Silok [Male] 24 years old Height- 6’5’’ Eye/c- Hazel Hair/c- Dusty blonde INFO- Roman is a guard at Kenneski Prison. He was forced to join the guard when he turned 18 by his father, when he refused to take on the family butcher business. He’s a kind soul, and doesn’t want to hurt anybody. He believes that what the Kenneski officials are doing to magic users is wrong, and wants to put a stop to it. He’s huge- both height and width wise because of his muscles. He’s very intimidating- until you get to know him, that is.
Nephinae Wylder [Female] 30 years old Height- 5’10’’ Eye/c- Amber Hair/c- Pale blonde INFO- Nephinae is one of the head magisters in Kenneski Prison. She’s rather daunting, tall and quiet and mysterious. Her father is the head priest of The Church, the same church that is imprisoning 'magic users'. And although she is technically walking in her father's footsteps, she wants to do what is right, knowing that what is happening to magic users is not it. There is something else about her, as well, something that tells you there is more you need to learn about her that you just aren’t able to in the prison.

This IF will be rated 18+ for mentions of suicide (of a character close to the MC) , mental disorders, hallucinations, mind control, optional sexual encounters, mentions of sexual assault (of another character), mentions of human trafficking (of another character), and possibly other triggering themes (this will be updated as I write).
Kieran | M | He/Him| The Best Friend
Kieran has been your best friend for as long as you can remember, he was there for you when you needed him, so it absolutely crushed you when he was taken in the blight. But…Even as a Shadow, he seems to remember you. He was there for you when you needed it, so you decide to be there for him (begrudgingly or otherwise).
Kieran is made of shadows for the time being. You can not see his face, and the outlines of his body seem to blur into the air, his eyes are the only thing light about him. Sometimes, he prefers the shape of a wolf over his human figure. Originally, his freckled dark bronze skin, wild brown curls, and golden eyes were the features that painted your history.
romance-able by all genders, he is demisexual and panromantic
Eliahs | M | He/Him| The Rogue
A charismatic and selfish con man, he grates your nerves but upon Kieran’s pushing, you eventually decide having more people on your side will be beneficial to your survival. Turns out, he’s much more valuable on your side than not, and he wasn’t just bluffing. He knows a guy, and he will show you the way, if you’ll have him.
Eliahs is slim but firm, like an acrobat. His pale skin does little to ccontrast his milky blonde curls that nearly brush his chin. His eyes are light green and in the right light they look ice blue. His smirk is as easy as his relaxed stature.
romance-able by all genders, he is pansexual and aromantic (he usually leans romance-neutral, and rarely positive)
Thalia | F | She/Her | The Fae Guide
It is not easy to know where you’re going in the Forgotten Realms, but it is easy to lose your way (or your mind). Thalia has lived here her whole life, and seems to really like you.
Thalia has cool dark skin and a dark green afro, she is all supple skin and curves. Her wings are holographic and green, resembling that of a dragonfly. She has vitiligo on her face and on her body.
she is not romance-able (in a sense), you can sleep with her as any gender but she is not willing to leave her home to travel with you, and will not do a relationship where you’re both in different places.
Meiri | NB | She/Xer | The Half-Changeling
The half-changeling who tries to kill you. Yep…She’s flippant and peculiar. She claims to see things that aren’t really there, and is strangely paranoid. Xe is especially curious, but other than that you can’t figure out why she’s so eager to follow you. Nevertheless, xer powers are something you can use.
Xer hair is hip-length and dark black, and xer fringe is cut into straight bangs. Her skin is porcelain white and her body is lithe and angular. Xer face is marred by a large scar on the right side, a gash that appeared to blind xer in one eye. She is missing the usual facial “petals” that most changelings have.
Meiri is romance-able by female and nonbinary MCs, she is greysexual and lesbian.
Anesa | F | She/Her | The Witch
She is who you’re looking for. She is a legend among mages, whether she is a legend for good or bad is all up to opinion. She is known as a prodigy, for her age, it is nearly impossible to get where she is now, so why hasn’t she tried fixing the Blight? What does she know that nobody else does and why does she keep the secrets so close to her chest?
Anesa has long, mid-back length dark grey hair, despite being in her mid-twenties. Her skin is tan and sunkissed and her body is pear-shaped, thin at the top but thick in the hips and thighs. She has multiple black-inked tattoos on her body which range from small runes and protection charms to beautifully intricate depictions of nature and mystical creatures or plants.
Anesa is romance-able by all genders, she is bisexual and biromantic.
Amity | F | She/Her | The Ghost
Amity is a small ghost child who died in the Blight. Her parents became Shadows and ended up killing her. Anesa retrieved her soul and turned her into what she is now. Amity seems to be Anesa’s weak spot, as do children in general. It’s unsure what Anesa’s motives were when turning Amity, but Amity is enamored with her nonetheless, and makes good, quiet company when you need it.
Amity is transparent and blue. She almost seems to glow. She is often in a dress and with her hair to her shoulders, the ends curled outward.
Amity is obviously not romance-able, seen as though she is a child.
Poly Route is Meiri x Anesa x Female/Nonbinary!MC
And possibly others!

Do you have tips on writing a character who hasn't eaten in a while?
Hunger is more than a mere rumble in the belly; it is a powerful human experience that intertwines emotion with the physical, influencing a character’s actions and shaping their decisions. Whether it is the gnawing emptiness of a missed meal or the desperate ache of long-term deprivation, hunger can be a compelling force in storytelling.
Persistent thoughts of food
Increased irritability or lack of focus
Hoarding behaviours
Overprotective around food
Frequently visit places where food can be obtained
Partake in activities that distract from hunger
Eager to accept food-related invitations or tasks
Unusually willing to consume foods they normally wouldn’t
A gradual decline in energy or enthusiasm
Show obsessive behaviours
Easily agitated in social situations
Conversations frequently divert back to topics of food
Bartering or trading items of value for food
Impatient when waiting for food in group settings
Feel shame or embarrassment when their hunger is noticed
Increased generosity when they have food, knowing what it’s like to be without
Reluctance to share food or an obsession with equal portions
Withdraw from social interactions to avoid exposing their hunger
Probe others for information about potential food sources
Relationships could be strained or strengthened through the sharing or withholding of food
Slumped or listless posture due to low energy
Stomach clutching or other physical manifestations of hunger
Fidgety, restless movements or a loss of coordination
Fixation with watching others eat or staring at food
Slow, lethargic response to stimuli unrelated to food
Exhibit rapid eating behaviours when food is available
Frequently licking lips in anticipation of eating
Increased response to food-related stimuli, like smelling food from afar
Distracted gaze, as if looking for food opportunities
Display physical signs of malnutrition, such as physical weakness, hair loss or sallow skin
Pessimistic or short-tempered
Single-mindedness focus that prioritises food
Impolite or a lack of social graces
Increased risk-taking behaviour through desperation
Manipulative
Fluctuating moods
Sense of hopelessness
Heightened sense of gratitude for any food received
A less discerning perspective on what is considered ‘edible’
Reevaluating personal values and priorities
Lead to resourcefulness and problem-solving skills
Strengthening of relationships through shared experiences of scarcity
Hunger may catalyse a character’s personal growth or shift in perspective
Lead to communities coming together to support each other
Characters might discover new talents or skills in their quest to find food
Act as a motivator for a character to overcome obstacles
May lead to intense moments of satisfaction or relief when resolved
Build an appreciation for the simple things in life, including basic sustenance
Show how hunger can become a catalyst for social or political change.
Can be the driving force behind a character’s ultimate success story.
Chronic hunger can lead to physical and mental health decline
May push characters to commit acts they would normally consider immoral
Show the breakdown of social order or relationships
Result in a character’s loss of dignity or self-respect
Can have a debilitating effect on a character’s ability to achieve their goals
Character development might take a dark turn, showing a descent into obsession or madness
Tragic endings, such as starvation or conflict over resources
Expose societal inequities and drive wedges between groups
Illustrate the loss of innocence, as characters are forced to confront harsh realities
An insurmountable barrier, leading to unfulfilled potential or unfinished journeys
Ravenous
Starving
Famished
Hollow-stomached

What to expect this chapter:
be transported into your new steampunk book.
be reborn as Sovereign
meet the cast
69 I did make some small changes tot he original intro post:
bumped the time since Sovereign took the power to 400 years
aged up Eli and Keyon significantly ( no, Eli is not a vampire :P ) Let me know what you think so far, if you spot any errors or if you'd like to see something added.
I have made good progress in the prologue, mhmm. Another 1000 words in. I'm nearly done with this half of the prologue, then I can get on to the next bit. And then...code it...
Very happy with today's progress 😌
--The hungry mouth of Bridehall Manor lets out its clarion call. You have been compelled to answer.
You play as the youngest child of the Simonson family, born out of infidelity-- a perfect Victorian scandal. Due to your unfortunate birth circumstances, your parents have decided to send you away to take up a position as head housekeeper/butler at the remote Bridehall Manor after the previous one's untimely (and altogether strange) passing. You expect your time in the mansion in the Catskills of New York to be uneventful and isolating.
You'd be wrong.
The longer you stay at Bridehall, the more secrets you find hidden behind its mahogany doors, beneath its ornate wallpaper, under its rich hardwood floors, and especially within the denizens of the house themselves.
Just be careful not to drown in the deep, deep black of its shadows.
+ Customize your MC-- what's their attitude towards society? How do they feel about working at Bridehall? What are their thoughts on the supernatural?
+ Also, choose your gender,* interests, personality, name, and more.
+ Discover more about the (troubling) history of Bridehall and the people that have lived in it.
+ Experience the world's most uncomfortable carriage ride.
+ Romance 1 of 5 ROs-- the matriarch, the minister-in-training, the runner-up, the major, or the phantom.
+ Befriend those who live there, or make enemies. Connection is a fragile thing, especially in a place like Bridehall.
+ Blood sacrifices! If you're into that sort of thing.
TW: Gore (not extremely descriptive), mentions of infidelity, violence, brief suggestive content, mentions of animal death, mentions of drug use. This IF is recommended for those 15+.
================================================*Disclaimer: Because this IF is inspired by the 1880s, gender roles are still sort of a thing. There is an option to play as femme/masc non-binary, but based on your presentation, that affects whether you are the housekeeper/butler and how you are treated in society. However, there will not be any transphobia/intentional misgendering in this IF. It's just not something I want to write. I'm not non-binary myself, so I'm very open to suggestions on things to change relating to this topic.
================================================
🌑Harriet Margrave -- the matriarch -- (she/her) {FMCs only}
| Assured. Respectable. Intimidating. The wife of Amos Margrave, although she doesn't like it when people bring it up. She runs the house, some might say with an iron fist. She seems to have taken a dangerous liking to you.
| However, beneath her strong, cool exterior, she's not all that she seems-- you catch glimpses of something dark and curious lurking. It's up to you to decide whether it should never see the light of day or, perhaps, to be consumed entirely by it.
| Harriet is in her late 40s, with ash brown hair always kept in a neat, complex updo and deep blue eyes that shift with tones of green in different lights. She has a light but rosy complexion and stands at around 5'7. She tends to wear a lot of black, as if she's in perpetual mourning, although she doesn't mind an occasional blue accent.
"Low and deep Spake in mine ear her voice: "And didst thou dream, This could be buried? This could be sleep? And love be thrall to death! Nay, whatso seem, Have faith, dear heart; this is the thing that is!" Thereon I woke, and on my lips her kiss." -- snippet of Assurance (1887) by Emma Lazarus
================================================
🌒Ansel Margrave -- the minister-in-training -- (he/him)
| Flighty. Devout. Gentle. A hopeful future Methodist minister, he's recently been plagued by supernatural visions (or so he says,) and your arrival and the circumstances surrounding it do nothing to calm his worries. You may be able to reassure him otherwise.
| As you get to know him, he may reveal that he has far better reasons to be afraid than you might think. Will you walk with him through his troubles, or leave him to wander the solemn corridors of Bridehall on his own?
| Ansel is in his early 20s, and he looks much like his mother with his ashy brown hair and pale complexion, although due to its lack of rosiness it sometimes borders on ghostly. He'd like to dress more vibrantly but fears reprisal from his clerical peers, thus, he usually sticks to muted greens and browns. He stands at around 5'9, and wears spectacles.
"In solitude profound, As shadows fall, what memories, Thick as dew-drops on sun-risen meadows Troop around thee!" -- snippet of Night In Egypt (1880) by George Vaughan
================================================
🌓Cecil/ia Blumenthal -- the runner-up -- (he/him or she/her)(corresponds to the MC's gender)
| Independent. Scrappy. Creative. C's been working at Bridehall for practically their whole life, climbing the ranks until they could finally reach the position of head butler/housekeeper they deserved-- until you came along. In their eyes, you have everything you want on a silver platter, and how much work have you done to get it? None. In short, they've got a real bone to pick with you. Will you play into the feud, or maybe try to change their feelings? Honestly, best of luck on that one.
| Because of how long they've been at Bridehall, C knows more about its history and secrets than they let on. Much, much more.
| C is in their mid-20's, with shiny brown curls that F!C keeps in an artfully rushed bun and M!C keeps just a bit too long. They have coffee-brown eyes and warm, tanned skin dotted with freckles. They stand at 5'6. They prefer to dress for convenience rather than style, but they always wear a tarnished silver brooch in the shape of a bird-- F!C pins it to her collar, while M!C pins it to his lapel.
"I was angry with my foe: I told it not, my wrath did grow. And I waterd it in fears, Night & morning with my tears: And I sunned it with smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles. And it grew both day and night. Til it bore an apple bright. And my foe beheld it shine, And he knew that it was mine." -- snippet of A Poison Tree (1794) by William Blake
================================================🌔 Marshall Ward -- the major -- (he/they)
| Outgoing. Empathetic. Perfectionist. A new arrival at Bridehall like you, he's an old family friend of the Margraves who plans to stay for the autumn. He's the perfect picture of polite society-- porcelain smiles and impeccable manners. Despite the divide between him as a guest and you as the help, he insists on making a connection with you. One that may be a bit too strong for his own good.
| Now, you don't know much about the military yourself, but it is a bit odd that a non-retired military officer was permitted leave for an entire season, and whenever you ask questions surrounding his arrival, you only get heavy silence in return. It's as if there's a tight wire of secrecy underlying his sunny veneer, and the more you press, the more it's likely to snap.
| Marshall is in his early 30s, with pushed-back blonde hair and an impeccably combed mustache. They have light skin and have a small scar running across their cheek, and he stands at 6'2. He is very meticulous in the way he dresses and is particularly fond of red ties with embroidered patterns on them.
"Volleyed and thundered; Stormed at with shot and shell, While horse and hero fell. They that had fought so well Came through the jaws of Death, Back from the mouth of hell, All that was left of them, Left of six hundred. -- snippet of The Charge of the Light Brigade (1854) by Lord Alfred Tennyson ================================================
🌕Annabelle -- the phantom -- (she/her)
| Mysterious. Quiet. Ethereal. Every so often, out of the corner of your eye or the reflection in a mirror, you catch a glimpse of her. Is she even real, or is she simply a product of your own mind, spiraling ever deeper into instability? Whatever she is, you feel an indescribable, intangible pull to her that may become very hard to resist.
| Annabelle is inextricably linked to the house and its history. If you dig to learn more about her, you may unearth the very roots that Bridehall stands on. Roots that it would very much like to keep underground.
| Annabelle appears to be in her mid-20s, although the semi-translucent, filmy aspect to her makes it a bit hard to tell. She has very dark skin that glitters and shines under moonlight, and she seems to be perpetually wet, as if she had just been thrown in a pond. She wears a pale pink dress a decade or so out of date, and stands at about 5'3.
"For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling-- my darling-- my life and my bride, In her sepulchre there by the sea-- In her tomb by the sounding sea. -- snippet of Annabel Lee (1849) by Edgar Allan Poe
