Succulent Care Guide

Succulent Care Guide

I see a lot of people killing their succulents due to ignorance of how to care for them. Here’s a quick guide!

Lighting: Most* succulents require full sun, meaning they need direct sunlight for 4-6+ hours a day. South or west-facing windows are ideal for succulents. You can also move your succulent around windows throughout the day to give as much light as possible, if you want.

If your succulent has previously not received enough light, GRADUALLY give it more and more sun over two weeks. This will prevent sunburn.

Failure to give your succulent proper lighting will result in etiolation – a process in which your plant will grow lanky, weak stems in an attempt to find more light.

If you can’t provide enough light, succulents probably aren’t right for you. Look into lower light plants, such as pothos or peace lily!

Type of Pot: Succulents need a pot with a drainage hole. End of story. No rocks in the bottom will help, no bullshit. Drainage. Hole.

Size of Pot: Pick a pot no more than one inch larger than your plant’s rootball. Overpotting will kill your plant. Oversized pot = too much soil = more water than your plant can use = death from root rot.

Soil: Regular potting soil is terrible for succulents as it’s water-retentive. Succulents like well-draining soil with lots of perlite or pumice, and gritty ingredients such as fine bark or turface. Look for a cactus&succulent soil mix, or just improve regular soil by adding 50% perlite. Avoid anything with peat moss! Avoid MiracleGro.

Time to Water: Find a wooden toothpick for small pots, or a wooden dowel for larger ones. Insert the wood into the soil. If it comes out wet, with damp soil sticking to it, it’s not time to water yet. If it comes out clean and dry, your succulent is thirsty! Think of checking brownies with a toothpick to see if they’re done baking.

This is recommended because often times your finger cannot feel the soil towards the bottom of the pot, and you need to make sure all of the soil is dry before watering.

DO NOT WATER ON A SCHEDULE. DO NOT RELY ON A WETNESS METER (THEY ARE INEFFECTIVE). DO NOT WATER DAILY. Listen to your plant!

How to Water: When your succulent’s soil is dry, water thoroughly, until water drains out of the drainage hole. Allow all excess water to drain before putting it back into any saucers or decorative pots.

*Some succulents’ lighting needs may vary – such as Haworthias with “windows” in their leaves, who don’t like as much sun, or Sempervivums who need much more sun than most. Look up your specific plant’s care to be sure!

Does anyone else really like the whole mall aesthetic (probably an 80′s/90′s kid thing) but instead of consumerism there’s micro-apartments, a whole lot more vegetation, and a commons area? Maybe with keeping the whole food court thing as a place for people to eat together.

Sustainable fashion is not affordable

Ethically and environmentaly friendly made clothes are expensive as hell and it makes sense. Fast fashion is cheap because it uses slaves and it destroys the planet. Sustainable fashion is great but not everyone can really afford it. So I thought I’d share some tips on how to be more nature friendly while not spedning too much money:

1. Use what you have

You don’t need to buy new sustainable clothes, you don’t have to buy anything new at all. Use what you have as long as you can and as much as you can.

This doesn’t apply to clothes only. You don’t need new wooden cutlery, just take your silverware from home. You don’t need new home decorations, move things around to get the best out of them.

2. Don’t throw stuff away

People have a tendency to throw away things that are bad for the environment, but you should always think about it before you throw it away. You already own it and throwing it away is worse than using it as long as you can.

3. Thrift

Buying used is even better than buying new sustainable things

4. Buy as little as you can

Try to stop buying things you don’t need completely. Buy one tshirt that you need from fast fashion store is a lot less harmful than buying 3 just because you like them

I hope I helped and have a great week!

What do you think of vertical axis wind turbines? Seems to me they'd complement small domestic PV installations nicely and could use some wider usage

I’ve heard some people get quite preachy about vertical axis wind turbines being no good, but personally I’m rather fond of them. I definitely agree that for domestic use, they make more sense than regular windmills. They’re also much better suited to urban environments.

The typical style of wind turbines are great when you have lamellar flowing air currents, like near the coast or on flat plains, but city wind is more gusty and turbulent. Vertical axis turbines definitely seem ideal for that!

I think some of the reservations people have stem from the fact that, in the past, vertical axis wind turbines have typically been less reliable, and the turbine blades are more prone to fatigue. Though using modern engineering materials and turbine designs, I’m not convinced those old problems still apply.

Some designs for small scale applications are also impressively discreet and quiet – though seemingly rather expensive!

What are your favorite online planty boy shops?

I did a post about generally all places I’d found to buy plants online which folks made some very lovely additions to. Some of those in my original post I wouldn’t necessarily recommend because there are way cheaper/better places to shop, but that was more of a “here’s what’s out there and is most popular” type post that I really need to do an updated version of someday. But anyway here are some of the places I’ve ordered from that I had a good experience with or seen people order from that I would really like to attempt to order from.

Glasshouse Works - this place has a huge selection and some very old stock plants and does not…. necessarily keep up with current trends and price markups so you can find some cool stuff here for relatively low prices (and low resolution lol). Also, their “collections” are very cool and cost effective. I have ordered twice from them, once in the spring and once in the fall and was very happy with my orders. They also regularly throw in a free “extra” if one fits in your box which is my favorite.

Steve’s Leaves - this place is a wee bit pricier than I’d like but in the end, I think it’s worth it because they ship big and healthy plants. they have a huge stock of begonias and tradescantia and peperomia, if you’re into that and their catalog changes frequently. they do a weekly email special which is fun! I’ve only ordered once from them (got my West Texas Blizzard begonia) but I see loads of people consistently having good experiences with them.

Etsy - I don’t really have a favorite specific shop but etsy is a great place to find a lot of different plants, especially cuttings. definitely look into the reviews of the shop before purchasing though.

Logee’s - tbh this place barely makes it on my list of favorites, just because I have only ordered there once and they tend to be… overpriced and overhyped for the plant you get/what they stock. but they also have a cool catalog and frequent email specials that are lots of fun to look through. I ordered my Begonia maculata wightii from them last year and have been pleased with it, though it was definitely overpriced for a plant so easy to propagate.

Arid Lands Greenhouse -disclaimer here that I have placed an order but not received it yet because I asked them to hold if they felt the weather was bad (which it has been), but they have an absolutely huge catalog of less frequently offered succulents and seem very much geared toward serious hobbyists rather than gimmicks and are very knowledgable. they’re located in arizona and grow a lot of their stuff from seed.

The People’s Plants - is one I am including here only because this is the website where I recently preordered my Thai Constellation Monstera. This is I think their second or third preorder run and I have seen several people very happy with the plants they received, so I feel comfortable linking them. They have some other cool tropicals in and out of stock from time to time it seems but I don’t know how they compare to other shops.

NSE Tropicals - is one I enjoy seeing instagram updates from but probably wouldn’t order from just because giant aroids aren’t my thing. They have some really awesome beautiful stock plants (almost nothing is in stock currently because winter).

Taylor Greenhouses - this one is similar to Glasshouse Works where it’s owned by some older folks who can barely run a web page. But does have some cool plants (especially begonias) hidden in there and free shipping on orders over $85. I’ve watched a few unboxing videos from folks and not been overly impressed by the size of the plants for the price but still a cool place to poke around.

Josh’s Frogs - I’ve never ordered plants from here (maybe ordered water plants I can’t remember) but if you’re looking for terrarium/vivarium plants and supplies, they’re a great website. They sometimes have some pretty cool plants for cheap, though they’re vivarium sized so pretty small.

PA Orchid Exchange - I have not looked too deeply into this one and haven’t seen any unboxing videos but they’re the newest plant place that’s caught me eye, especially if you’re after some Trendy Boys for what looks like relatively affordable prices?
