Students Design Beach Vacuum That Can Suck Up Microplastics While Leaving All the Sand
Good News Network
A group of engineering students have created a massive vacuum cleaner that can efficiently suck up all the tiny microplastics on sandy beach

ive said this before but as climate change ramps up faster and faster and we feel the effects more and more in our everyday lives our infrastructure and architecture is going to need radical changes, and i love building science, but its not just going to be stuff like cranking up the r-values on our houses and other passivhaus things, we have to look at resilient infrastructure like earth berming and building underground like in coober pedy to avoid heat, have to look at flood mitigation tunnels like the tokyo flood control system, have to look at stuff like staten islands seawall

no one solution is going to protect us from climate change, and no small ones either

shits gonna have to change, and not every solution is going to pan out perfectly, but we need to be able to try some pretty over the top seeming stuff

even just where i live, the seasons have dramatically changed over the last decade, old ellicott city has been wiped out by floods twice, summers are hot and humid as hell, this cant last

Solarpunk conflict Sugestions

Naturalist Vs Bioengineers:

Trouble could be brewing between two ideologies in your solarpunk setting. Those who believe in keeping nature ‘pure’ and those who believe in integrating nature and technology closer together.

New world Vs old remnants

A lot of mistakes were made before the world reached its current setting. What if one of those mistakes has survived? A malfunctioning weaponised drone/robot is accidentally reactivated and now prowls the streets and it’s a race against time to stop it.

Solarpunk Vs Lunarpunk

Conflicting cultures. City dwells vs nomadic tribes. Eco tech vs. Eco occultism. Two different branches of humanity struggling to understand one another and clashing cultural values.

Man vs the dark side of nature

Mankind may have stopped being a threat to the planet, but the natural world is full of threats. new diseases and plant blights are always evolving, not to mention eruptions, floods, droughts, and meteors all still happen.

New tech murder mystery

Society as a whole may be better, but crime still happens. What is it like being a detective in such a world? how many new ways does the world’s new biotech provide for murderers looking to get away with it?

Prairies Are Some Of The Most Endangered Ecosystems In The World, With The Tallgrass Prairie Being The

Prairies are some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, with the tallgrass prairie being the most endangered. Only 1-4% of tallgrass prairie still exists. Prairies are critically important, not only for the unique biodiversity they possess, but for their effect on climate. The ability to store carbon is a valuable ecological service in today’s changing climate. Carbon, which is emitted both naturally and by human activities such as burning coal to create electricity, is a greenhouse gas that is increasing in the Earth’s atmosphere. Reports from the International Panel on Climate Change, a group of more than 2,000 climate scientists from around the world, agree that increased greenhouse gases are causing climate change, which is leading to sea level rise, higher temperatures, and altered rain patterns. Most of the prairie’s carbon sequestration happens below ground, where prairie roots can dig into the soil to depths up to 15 feet and more. Prairies can store much more carbon below ground than a forest can store above ground. In fact, the prairie was once the largest carbon sink in the world-much bigger than the Amazon rainforest-and its destruction has had devastating effects.

15 September 2020: Largest Remaining Arctic Ice Shelf Falling Apart.

Between July 30 and August 4, the Milne Ice Shelf collapsed into the Arctic Ocean. As Canada’s last fully intact ice shelf, it was estimated to have shrunk the remaining mass by 43 percent, losing more than 30 square miles of land area, which is bigger than the size of Manhattan. […] Located in Canada’s largest and northernmost territory, Nunavut, the shelf is thought to have collapsed mostly because of above-normal temperatures for the region during July 2020, 9 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the established 30-year average. [Text from NOAA press release. “Canada’s Milne Ice Shelf Collapses.” 12 August 2020.]

hm, i feel like there’s a big problem when we try to visualize a sort of “solarpunk”-like society where we assume that every place a gonna be a grassy, tree-fillled, green city and that’s like fine and all but it’s very inauthentic to the diverse landscapes of our planet. for example, i live in southern california and ive seen trees and grass but i’ve also seen desert with cacti and bushes and dry land. when we associate our future, our “progress”, with a certain landscape we are not treating the land with the respect it deserves. deserts, plains, mountains, marshes are all apart of the world we live in and we need to invision a future with those lands too

also with all this in mind, a lot of this aesthetic and line of thinking can be damaging to indigenous communities. thinking the desert is just “empty space” and thinking the plains should be replaced with forests go hand-in-hand with colonialist ideology. no land is empty land, it is always someone’s home. we need to make space for indigenous people in our solarpunk, cottagecore, vegan, etc. ideologies if we ever want to truly make progress and not perpetuate the same shit with a different brand on it
