Jean-Paul Valley first entered the post-Crisis DC Universe in the 1992 4-issue miniseries 'Batman: Sword of Azrael', written by Dennis O'Neil and penciled by Joe Quesada. A former graduate student at Gotham University, Jean-Paul's life would irreversibly change when his father would crawl to his door dying, dressed in the garb of Azrael, the Avenging Angel - an assassin for the Catholic cult Order of Saint Dumas. Thus began a series of events that would activate 'The System', conditioning that had been programmed into Jean-Paul since birth that allows he - as his father and his grandfathers before him - to give control over to the Order's personal punisher and access latent superhuman skills and abilities.
Jean-Paul and Azrael would go on to become Batman in the stead of Bruce Wayne as Bruce recovered from spinal trauma inflicted by Bane, star in their own 100-issue solo series, escape (and destroy) Jean-Paul’s father’s sect of the Order, and become members of the first iteration of what is most well known as the Bat Family until their death. They played a vital role in DC's Knightfall, Contagion, and No Man's Land story arcs.
After the New 52 reboot, they would go on to play big roles in Detective Comics: Rebirth, Justice League Odyssey, and star in a second solo miniseries. As part of the New 52 and Rebirth initiatives, Jean-Paul and Azrael's backstory and details would be changed, though as of 2022 it is implied that aspects of their New Earth origin have been re-established.
Linked below is a spreadsheet including most/all of Jean-Paul Valley and Azrael's comic appearances from their debut up to their most recent issues. Sorted chronologically and divided into sections based on arcs and events, each row features information such as title date and writer/penciller, which identity/mantle is most prominent in each appearance, personal notes on the contents of each issue, and a section for any content warnings that may need addressed.
This spreadsheet is continually updating/a perpetual WIP. New issues are added as they release.
Happy reading!

CROSSWORD???!?!
CAN IT BE SOLVED BY DESCRIPTION?!?!?
SAW ROMAN NUMERALS AT 2:27 WHICH MAYBE FIT THE CROSSWORD???
By popular demand of (1) person in the comments of a post I’ve made briefly touching on this subject, I have compiled all of my thoughts on the portrayal of Tanizaki Jun’ichirou—and by extension, Naomi—in Bungou Stray Dogs in reference to the works of the real life Tanizaki Jun’ichirou-sensei (who I’ll be calling Tanizaki-sensei to differentiate from his fictional counterpart). Disclaimer that I don’t have the academic background to write as an expert on this subject. I will be citing all of my sources in the text.
Tanizaki-sensei (1886-1965) was an author who was well known for writing about sexual obsession and fetishes, and the exploration of Japanese versus Western culture in his works. His female characters were particularly reputable for having strong personalities (drawing upon the dofuku - “poisonous woman” or femme fatale troupe), and frequently fulfilled the domineering role in sadomasochistic relationships with men. This recurring theme is most likely the basis for Tanizaki and Naomi’s relationship in Bungou Stray Dogs.
In a similar vein, motifs such as dreaming, delusions, and fantasies (oftentimes of the erotic nature) frequently appear in Tanizaki-sensei’s works. This could be the basis for Tanizaki’s illusion projection ability, “Light Snow”, which is named after Tanizaki-sensei’s great novel, Sasameyuki (1948), also known as The Makioka Sisters, the title of the English translation, which was changed due to the nuance of the original title being difficult to convey in English.
Going on a slight tangent here, Tanizaki-sensei also wrote a handful of works depicting blindness, such as A Portrait of Shunkin (1933) and A Blind Man’s Tale (1931). In these works, blindness can be interpreted as a metaphor for blind devotion and obsessive worship of one’s love interest, even to the point of martyrdom. For example, in A Portrait of Shunkin (1933), the character Sasuke destroys his own eyesight for his vain mistress, who did not want to be seen after an incident destroys her beauty. Tanizaki and Naomi’s deep affection for each other is reminiscent of these themes (Tanizaki’s willingness to throw away his morals for Naomi, Naomi taking gunfire in Tanizaki’s place).
Unfortunately, we aren’t given any other concrete pieces of information about Tanizaki or Naomi that can be reliably connected to something in regards to the real life author…

i see dazai as someone with shit posture because they're insecure about how lanky they look compared to the other people in class, even if she still teases chuuya for being short. she also wears opaque black stockings to hide her legs, and keeps her skirt long. she doesn't like how her hair is, but only chops it all off when she leaves for college. she's Very unpopular, but she doesn't really care. she prefers it that way, though she could do without the gossiping.
chuuya's a jock . she started growing her hair out at the start of highschool, and is the best student in sports in her class. she hates wearing her blazer, finding it restricting, even in winter. she tries to sneakily make her skirt shorter because she thinks it looks cooler, but she doesn't like that it limits how much she can do exercise wise (she likes running around and moving a lot). she's popular with her class, more so with the guys, both for her appearance and skills and for being kind to everyone despite her short temper.
dazai and chuuya are an unlikely duo- no one really gets why they hang out with one another so often. even though it seems like they hated each other at first, they're pretty much attached to the hip, and are very protective over one another. they walk home together, and dazai sleeps over at chuuya's whenever she can.
chuuya found dazai weird and rude at first, but now she's more fond of them, she would never admit that, though. she's the reason why dazai's hair hasn't devolved into a birds nest.
dazai found chuuya annoying and naive at first. ... she still finds her annoying. in an affectionate way. she likes to tease her to hear her roll her eyes, and seeing her face scrunch up.
there's more but i don't want to write too much ... and i haven't developed them completely yet JSHDB these are just doodles i did at college
THANK U FOR READING :3 don't mind typos i don't feel like reading it over SJHBDAJ

here me out: what if celestia manipulated ishimaru to kill hifumi instead
i always felt ishimaru's arc is such a waste in him coping with grief and while his un-timely death adds to this sense of tragedy in how he never fully resolves his grief, it still feels very much like a disrespctful end to his character to die at the hands of ... hifumi who just being a simp
not to mention just gives hifumi an even more sour note to end off at, while celestia looks stupid for entrusting hifumi of all people. sure maybe ironic since hifumi and celestia def are an unlikely duo, but its really imbalanced and not worth it
so my take is celestia uses a very emotionally vulnerable ishimaru in her murder plan. someone like hifumi in her eyes would be worthless so she believes that will be an easy first target to entrust ishimaru with. it adds to ishimaru's downward spiral, being forced to kill for whatever reason celestia tells him, making it ironic that such a lawful good character can be broken by death/the killing game to commit a murder. it also adds to celestia's supposed manipulation ability, being particularly henious of her to use ishimaru for her own gain. but that is totally in line with celestia's character and only adds to her being someone you love to hate (or hate to hate, whatever floats your boat lol). not to mention, gives me one less reason to hate hifumi
alr babes heres ur csm crossover
more transfem cxs agenda i cant stop thinking abt her (ref)
