Me: *writes elaborate 20-page essay about the social constructions and deep psychological perspective featured within Todd Phillips’s Joker (2019) and how Arthur’s fall into “insanity” had always been affected by his environment and not just because he was crazy from the beginning but rather neglected, traumatized, abused, underfed, and constantly ignored by those around him, even when he needed the most help and tried his hardest to seek it and take his medication, which was also ultimately stripped away from him because of society’s overall regard towards mentally ill people and the idea that those under the poverty line or that struggle with any sort of neurological issue are somehow responsible for their situation; how Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix managed to convey such powerful symbolism and imagery through tasteful stylism and a raw, emotional performance that’s revolutionary considering how popular this film has been, despite the fear and misunderstood perceptions that it would somehow spark violence, how they managed to make the depictions of an intensely lonely, mentally ill individual so vulnerable, mesmerizing, but also troubling and unsettling at the the same time, how this film shows how dangerous a man who has nothing else to lose can be and how there are red flags, there are things we can all do to better improve our health care and social services systems, the institutions we intrust to offer a safe place for people who have nowhere else to go. How beautifully constructed the question of nature versus nurture is woven through each scene, and how complex the human psyche is, how fragile and harsh reality is, such as a thin pane of glass, talking about the subtleties of Phoenix’s performances and how well developed his arc is and how much research and love and support and effort and work he put into this role in order to accurately represent mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, self-destructive habits, and self-deprecating self-images, yet the childish hope that things will get better, that things can get better, until the next blow comes, the next person brushes you off, until you realize that really, no one gives a shit and are so self-absorbed they can’t even begin to grasp the hardships you go through just to survive each day. And how by shedding himself of everything he used to know, everything he used to have, or have responsibilities toward, and reshaping his identity, Arthur ultimately became a symbol a movement he didn’t have any part in throughout the entire film because the people could see themselves in him, projecting their own issues onto this idea of a “clown” vigilante with an “eat the rich” mentality, morphing this broken man into one of the most powerful figures in Gotham history due to the political turmoil and environmental factors plaguing the city, which happened to occur during Arthur’s decent, which wasn’t even really a decent to begin with, and he could have been helped, and he could have been “saved” from himself, but society, in the end, failed him.*

Honestly just the way this man does anything
at the risk of sounding too obsessed,
the way this man blinks…

I haven’t seen Joker in two weeks, I’m starting to have withdrawals
left brain: The Joker is a cinematic masterpiece that explores the mind and struggles of a mentally ill man without romanticizing or glorifying it. It commentates on classism and how society treats mentally ill persons so accurately that it becomes unnerving. Arthur’s descent into insanity was not caused by his mental illness, but because of the society that didn’t protect or care for him, bringing forth the conversation about how we as a society treat those who suffer from mental illnesses that we have often ignored. It is a bold, beautiful, real portrayal of the Joker. Joaquin Phoenix put his heart and soul into this role to bring the Joker to life and Todd Phillips created the masterpiece of the decade. This film is so eloquently put together it is practically impossible to fully dissect the levels of symbolism and pure genius that went into it. The Joker is an example of the perfect film, there is no need for a sequel for this movie alone delivers everything one could hope for in a film. It was passionate, raw, innovative, inspiring, and an overall glorious film; a sequel would tarnish its perfection and would not fulfill us past the point of Joker. Some things just need to be left alone and remembered for us to cherish as its own separate piece without corporate greed running it into the ground.
right brain: *intensely breathing down Joaquin Phoenix and Tod Phillips’s necks*

I just overheard her talking to her mate saying it was the best movie and that they have to go see it omfg yes mum!
I took my almost anti-movie mum to see Joker yesterday. She was convinced she’d get bored and leave to go to Kmart, not because of the movie, rather just because she can’t sit down for two hours. She loved it, we spoke about it the whole way home and I saw this on her FB. I don’t think I’ve ever been so proud ❤️

Home Games 7 at Marvel 4 at the ‘G. I like this in terms of my personal travel to and from games but a bit worrying for finals should we make them we fckn better and have to play at the ‘G. North at the ‘G does not tickle my fancy at all tbh and Carlton at the ‘G on a Thursday night sounds awful, I’m tired already just thinking about trying to get home.
Away Games in Melbourne 2 at Marvel 3 at the ‘G
This is better. An almost even split sounds good to me. Hate that I have to get tickets to ANZAC Day but that’s the way the news goes. Also a little miffed that the country game isn’t our home game next year, I know I have to be almost alone in saying it but I really do like that it’s an annual game. There’s just something about hearing Waltzing Matilda before a game that really boosts my patriotism.
Interstate Games
1 at the SCG 2 at Adelaide Oval 1 at Optus Stadium 1 at Giants Stadium 1 at the Gabba
Can never seem to escape the SCG, I’ve always hated playing there think this is a personal attack on me by Gill but it is what it is and we’ll see how we go. I don’t mind playing twice in Adelaide. The annual Thursday night match in Perth is another one we can’t seem to ever escape, a bit sick of it at this point. Giants Stadium still gives me PTSD too and playing Round 23 away sucks. Interstate games are never going to be good when you can’t travel but that’s life.
Timeslots
4 Thursday nights 2 Friday nights 4 Saturday afternoons 3 Saturday twilights 4 Saturday nights 3 Sunday afternoons 1 Sunday twilight
There are NINE Thursday night games next season and they gave us FOUR of them! Thursday night football is good to watch when other teams are playing but when we’re playing it sucks, I feel like I don’t have anything left to really look forward to for the rest of the weekend. Very happy with our Sundays, I have to be alone in saying this but I love Sunday games the most, I get to watch every other match during the weekend and then end it by watching my own team, pure bliss tbh.
Teams We Play Twice
GWS, Collingwood, Adelaide, North Melbourne, Sydney
This is nice. I have a soft spot for GWS so playing them twice makes me happy. Collingwood and Sydney seem to be the norm recently in terms of a second match so no surprises there. Don’t mind playing Adelaide again and North should be good.
Overall seems like an alright draw, however we won’t really know until the season starts. Super keen for 2020, I miss footy so much already, I just need it to start as soon as possible. Go Dons!
HOIST IT *Not my gifs
