There are many things that pissed me off about RFK Jrs speech about Austin, but above all else- it was the idea that autism ruins families.
No it doesn’t. You ruin families Robert.
When you say how scary autism is, how some people can’t use the bathroom without having a supervisor with them, when you say they’ll never be able to hold a job (note- he didn’t say “some of them won’t be able to hold a job” which- is infuriating as an autistic who’s been working at retail for half a decade now), you end up demoralizing parents, and make them doubt their own abilities.
You should be offering encouragement. It shouldn’t need to be said that spouting off how “autism ruins families! Oh it’s horrible!” isn’t going to fix anything. You don’t actually care about the families- lest you’d be offering services to help raise autistic children. You just hate autistic people.
Autism speaks is the same way btw.
In light of the things RFK said about autistic people recently, I feel like it's important to remember where the term "Asperger's Syndrome" came from.
It was the nazi's way of sorting between "useful" autistic people that could still work for them, and "unwanted" autistic people that would be sent to the camps. We kept using the term until very recently to my memory, and I'm not one to speculate but I wouldn't be surprised if the distinction comes back into popularity in the near future. Or even becomes legally recognized.
This isn't about whether or not you personally paid your taxes or wrote a poem. People have value and a right to exist regardless of their ability to do those things, and the second we forget about that and say "oh but I'm not the kind of autistic person he's talking about, I'm useful" we've fallen directly back into the line of thinking they had in literal nazi germany.
During autism awareness month, it’s important to recognize this type of misinformation propaganda. Please reblog and share to spread the word. This is complete ableism.

The “average autistic person pays zero taxes” factoid is actually a statistical error. The average autistic person actually pays over ten thousand dollars in taxes per year. Emerald Mine Elon, who is a billionaire and regularly commits tax evasion, is an outlier and should not have been counted.

Lol heads up if you try to make a candle with food coloring, the food coloring will just sink to the bottom of the glass, and when the flame eventually reaches the bottom all the food coloring will catch fire and become one giant tall flame that you cannot possibly blow out and the glass will start to crack and then you'll throw your tea on it in a panic and then the extremely hot food coloring will boil and sizzle horribly and then the glass will shatter. Nintendo direct today was literally the saddest direct I’ve ever seen. 15 minutes to justify the $80 price tags- and yet all they showed off new is the turbo jump or whatever it’s called.
Im not even frustrated anymore. It’s just tiring at this point.
The worst part about all of this is that people still are like- “but she’s not gaining anything by me playing Hogwarts Legacy” or “I already bought the movie years ago! It’s fine! I’m not giving her more money”
Like- with hogwarts legacy- unless you pirate it she is gaining money. She has royalties. But even if she isn’t gaining any money- she gains cultural relevance. More people will recognize her name. More people will follow her on twitter. More people will think it’s okay to be a bigot.
