NINTENDO SWITCH PSA: the used switch game market is about to become VERY risky! if you buy used switch games, listen up!

starting around late february to early march 2024, buying a used switch game, even from a reliable game retailer, and then just playing it normally online, MIGHT get your nintendo switch permanently banned from online play! even if you try using a different nintendo account!

please read the rest of the post before commenting because this is COMPLICATED. this is a new situation and there is a lot of uncertainty. also watch the video at the bottom of this post ASAP if you can, because it has more information, will probably answer some other questions you may have, and it might get deleted soon. I started writing this post as soon as I finished watching the video because, fucking yikes this might get bad.

putting a cut here so I can add a note in the future if/when the extremely informative video below gets removed.

experts on this kind of stuff are concerned about it, so therefore I am concerned too.

are you familiar with flash carts? flash carts are cartridges that fit into the slots of game consoles that have micro SD card slots. game files get loaded to the micro SD card, which gets placed in the flash cart, which then can run the game as if you had the actual game cartridge in there.

those game files are then playable as usual on the original hardware. these were very common for the nintendo DS, but you can find them for gameboy, GBA, 3DS, and coming soon: the nintendo switch.

now, you might be thinking, what does this have to do with the used switch game market?

to get the game files to put onto the micro SD card, you do what is called a dump. you take the cartridge and 'dump' the files from the cartridge onto other storage. this can include a unique identification in the code of each nintendo switch game cartridge, which links it to a physical game cartridge, and allows it to be played on the switch.

and after those files have been dumped from the original cartridge, and make it onto the flash cart, the person with the flash cart is then free to sell the physical game cartridge, because the flash cart works the same as the game cartridge. whether that is online, at a flea market, returning it to the store, or wherever else used games are sold.

as is mentioned in the video below, a lot of people are looking forward to buying switch games, dumping the files, loading them onto a flash cart, and then either returning them or selling them to get their money back without disclosing that they already took the unique game ID. and basically get a ton of switch games for very cheap, if not free.

now. there creates a problem for people who want to buy used games.

say you buy a used cartridge, which has been used for this dumping process. you go online.

and that person with the flash cart with the files from the game you now have also goes online.

nintendo is then able to see that two consoles playing the same game with the same unique game ID are online at the same time, which is impossible without doing this dumping process. it would be VERY easy for nintendo to ban both switches or both nintendo accounts.

nintendo is known for banning people for using flash carts as well as modded hardware or modded games. nintendo has even taken legal action against people associated with modifying their hardware. so to say that this whole situation might result in bans is hardly a stretch of the imagination. and having two of the same ID online at the same time is a pretty fucking clear sign that something is up!

and once these dumped files get uploaded online, which some of them inevitably will, any used game cartridge could have its unique ID be in use from zero to thousands of people. and all it takes is two people online at the same time with the same game ID for nintendo to know something is up.

once this flash cart is on the market, there will be no way to know which used switch games have been dumped, duplicated, and are in use by someone else before you buy it, connect to the internet, and potentially get in trouble.

the tech used in this flash cart will also eventually make it very easy to make bootleg switch cartridges down the line which look and function identically to an original game cartridge. and say somewhere online sells a bunch of these bootleg cartridges, without disclosing that they are bootlegs, and they all have duplicate game IDs. and then more than one of these bootleg cartridges goes online with the same game ID. nintendo can see that.

these flash carts and bootlegs will work on ANY switch, modded or not. and if you might be thinking, “but wait! right now you need a modded switch to dump a switch game! surely that will make getting a used duplicated game less likely.” the flash cart company is also selling a system to dump these files without ever using a modded switch.

you can tell you have a flash cart by a visible micro SD card slot, but there might not be an easy way to tell a bootleg apart from a genuine copy with a legitimate unique ID.

whether you accidentally buy a legitimate cartridge that has already been dumped and is in use by a flash cart, or you accidentally buy an identical bootleg, or you go online with a flash cart with game files that might be in use by someone else, nintendo can see if duplicates of the same unique game ID are online. what happens next is up to nintendo. and again, nintendo has been known to freely ban anyone suspected of doing any form of hardware or software modification, including the type mentioned here.

so just going online with a used game purchased after late february MIGHT get the person playing it banned. it is unclear if just having your switch connected to the internet could get you in trouble, or if you need to play online with the game with a nintendo online subscription, or if one scenario will be more likely to result in a ban than the other. <- if anyone knows this and has a good source, let me know and I will add it here.

say a parent buys a nintendo switch and a bunch of cheap used games for their kid. that kid could then go online and get banned, by absolutely NO fault of their own. and then their parents might get REALLY mad thinking their kid did something awful online. damn even thinking about this sucks so hard. :( fuck

once a switch is banned at the console level, that console can never go online again. even with a different nintendo account. just like game cartridges have unique IDs, so do nintendo switches themselves.

and it is worth noting, since the nintendo switch launched, nintendo has been FAR more likely to ban nintendo switch consoles than nintendo accounts. if a nintendo account is banned, you can just make another account. but if the console is banned, you need another, non-banned nintendo switch to go online.

and since there may be an uptick of banned switches: people who get their switches banned, whether or not they ever realize why, may then try to sell or return their switch without disclosing that the console can no longer go online, use the eshop, or get updates. and some games require updates to run, even offline!

we have no idea what will happen, because this flash cartridge and associated hardware will be released to the public in late february to early march and is the first of its kind for the switch. maybe nothing will happen. maybe a ton of people will get banned just for accidentally buying a game used by someone else with a flash cart. maybe buying a used nintendo switch will become a huge gamble because banned switches will saturate the market. we have no idea yet.

taki udon has a very comprehensive video on this. right here. watch the video to learn more about what these products are and how to identify them. videos like these, on the subject of flash carts, often get taken down quickly by nintendo, and taki does a much better job at explaining this than me.

long story short, if you like the nintendo switch and buy used games or consoles: BE CAREFUL, and when march rolls around, PAY ATTENTION. we have no idea what will happen once this product and these practices become widespread. maybe there will be widespread bans. maybe nintendo will get this stuff taken off the market before there can be these kinds of accidental bans in any widespread way. we can only wait and see.

if you want to be the most cautious and proactive, consider buying used games sooner than later. if in the future you somehow suspect you bought a bootleg cartridge (hi from past rune!), do NOT play it online. and if you plan on using this flash cart without having the physical cartridge the files were dumped from on hand, DO NOT GO ONLINE WITH IT. you might fuck someone else over or get your own console banned.

It was a sunny day in Ponyville with the town ponies going to the market. Finding that perfect gift for their special somepony. The town is covered in red and pink decorations everywhere. Even some of the business’ windows have hearts and hooves theme painting on them. A sky blue mare with a rainbow colored mane and tail wearing a yellow scar around her neck, was walking through the market and booths looking at the items being sold at the fast paces.

"This is hopeless. I didn't think I'd be able to find something, aaahhh! Okay Dash, calm down. there might be something left, you just need to figure out something. She won't mind you being bad at this type of stuff, right?" saying more to herself than out loud in earshot, leaving out a sigh of desperation she was about to head to the next booth when she heard somepony call her name within the coward of customers bringing her out of her thoughts.

A pink mare with fluffy hot pink mare and tail happily appears out of nowhere bouncing towards her while, balancing boxes of pack sweets and goods on her head and back causing Dash to flitch in flight. Fearing that the boxes will tilt over and ruin the orders inside.

"Rainbow Dash! Hi! What are you doing here Dashie? Oh! Are you here to buy something! Wait! Didn't tell me! You're buying something for some pony special are you!?" The pink pony asks in excitement, still bouncing up and down happily.

The sky blue pegasi doesn't mind the pink party pony bubbly personality, but at times she can be a bit unpredictable, even crazy with going over the top. Along with creeping their friends out at times. Either way she doesn't mind the pink pony way of handling things in stressful situations.

"Hi Pinkie, uh...I was having trouble finding something special for somepony this year, heart, and hooves day. I was planning on going with flowers, but I didn't think I'd have enough bits to buy something else that would give that awe factor." response Dash nervously feeling a bit unsure to tell the truth. But to her surprise Pinkie pulls out a stuffed winterfox out of her saddle bag and gives it to her.

"I'm guessing you’re having a hard time deciding on what to give Fluttershy this heart and hooves. Luckily for you the Cakes and I are selling these plushies with our baking orders. This take around the orders are stockpiling like crazy! Anyway I'll give this to you as a friend discount, hopefully you'll find something for her that will make her smile." Pinkie pie says happily despite the mood around her. Dash just smiles a bit, feeling warm inside by Pinkie’s kindness.

"Thank you Pinkie, really, Now I need something for the animals. probably buy them toys or some food." Dash seemed a bit lost in thoughts while Pinkie pie was delivering the orders from left to right. Some of the shops are now putting out stock signs on the display windows and their booths. And the town ponies were heading home to prepare their thoughtful gifts and dinner for tonight.

Dash went inside one of the shops to look around not soon after Pinkie pie was left behind to finish with her deliveries early. The shop opened a few weeks ago and specializes in pet clothing and toys. Everything is 75% off leaving Rainbow enough bits to pay for each item once.

"Dash, how are we going to carry these to Fluttershy's cottage? The two of us can't carry them all at once." say Pinkie while helping get clothes for each animal. She finished with her shift and met up with Dash at the clothes selection. Voicing her concern to her.

"I have an idea, Pinkie, but you have to trust me and we need a bit of help." Rainbow responds to her, walking up and places the clothes on the checkout counter.

Fluttershy was outside her cotton attending and feeding her animal friends their afternoon sacks this fine evening. Heart and Hooves is a holiday that Fluttershy's was a bit nervous about since it’s the holiday if somepony will ask her out on a date or not. The thoughts of that had poke its head out during this time of year. And she knows she couldn’t get her hopes up too much.

Due to her shyness, the yellow pegasus mare has trouble speaking in public along with flying. Her self-confidence and self-esteem were low with self-doubt sparkle in her plate. After years of bullying from her bullies from flight school in Cloudale. Until Rainbow dash challenges them to a race for her honor causing her to fall off a cloud due to their flight speed. After that she got her cutie mark at the same time Dash performed a sonic rainboom and looked for her.

Both her and Dash got their cutie marks on the same day along with the other mare six. Fluttershy was about to head back inside her cottage, where she saw a brown color pegasus mare. With red, green, and white color mane and tail along with matching scarf walk up to her with a clipboard under one of her wings. With a delivery cart full of boxes behind her.

"Good evening madam, I’m here to ask you to offer your signature here on this slip of paper. To confirm that you have received your packages this evening." said the brown pegasus mare, giving her a smile while she offered her a pen to sign.

Fluttershy looks confused at first but takes the pen while the mare holds the clipboard up for her. When the slip of paper was completely signed off. The pegasus put the clipboard back under her wings and took a quick look around the area.

"Um, excuse me, ma’am, Why are you here? I didn’t order any packages today. Is there something that I need to know about?" ask the yellow pegasus feeling her shyness and anxiety beginning to creep up on her slowly by each passing moment.

The brown mare looked at her and was glad to answer her client's questions even though it was posted to be a surprise for them from their sweetheart.

"Oh! I'm here to deliver these pet items to your resident, since someone already paid for them out of their own pocket. and ask the post delivery service to send them here, honestly I find this a bit sweet. Whelp I'll be better off then, I don't want to finish the job late. Anyway have a happy Heart and Hooves day."

Before Fluttershy could respond to them, the brown pegasus was on her way to deliver more packages leaving the yellow mare with an unload stack of boxes in front of her. Not soon after her interaction with the volunteer delivery mare. She saw Dash and Pinkie walking up the path to her cottage. Fluttershy starts walking toward them still feeling a bit surprised on the delivery but quickly shakes it off.

"Hi Guys, what brings you here? are you the ones who pay for all this?" ask the yellow pegasus looking up at her friends and point her hoof out towards the stack of boxes in front of her cottage door.

Pinkie pie bounced up to her and nodded happily.

"Yup! But it was really Dashie's idea! She wants to give you something for Heart and Hooves day this year! Honestly I'm surprised she spent all her bits on this!" Pinkie says happily and heads off to see the animals. Leaving Dash and Fluttershy alone together.

"Rainbow do you…? I mean it's not like I.." Fluttershy was a bit hesitant to even form words from her mouth at this moment. Rainbow takes a few steps closer up to her and gives her a gentle kiss on her lips. Causing Fluttershy to blush a bright red shyly and slowly kiss her back.

The kisses seem to last for a long moment with time slowly slowing down for them, until both of them break the kiss needing to breathe and get oxygen back into their lungs. Both of the mares look at each other blushing from the exchange and looking into each other's eyes.

"Happy heart and hooves day Fluttershy." Rainbow looks in her eyes while Fluttershy looks back in hers.

"Happy heart and hooves day Rainbow." Fluttershy response back.

Both pegasus mares start walking up to the cottage, seeing Pinkie pie lending a helping hoof out with unpacking boxes. And storing some of the items in their rightful place with a pegasus pair following close behind her.
