Fred and George were some of the last people left in the common room. It was them, Hermione, and some first year. Fred and George got bored and wandered over to Hermione. She was supposed to be studying but instead she found herself doodling. Right in the middle of her paper was âI <3 Weasleyâ. They snuck up behind Hermione and peered over her shoulders.Â
âWell, what have we here,â Fred asked. Hermione jumped. When she saw them she tried to cover her papers.Â
âWhat do you want,â Hermione said in a startled tone.Â
âThe better question is what you want, Hermione. We saw your little paper,â George replied.Â
âItâs getting late, I ought to get to bed.â Hermione ducked under George and hurried to her dorm. Fred and George gave each other a wicked grin. They now had a mission.Â
Hermione avoided the twins for the next week. This, of course, was impossible because when Fred and George wanted to know something they found out and they wanted to know which Weasley she had her eyes on. Hermione did a pretty good job at hiding from them. She tried not to be in the common room or near Gryffindor tower at all, she always travelled through deserted, not well known corridors, and always stayed in private places. After classes had ended Hermione decided to stay in the Library.Â
The twins had anticipated that when they went looking for her. When they spotted Hermione they entered and said,â Ooooh, Granger, weâve been looking for you.â Hermione knew she couldnât just get out of this without looking suspicious.Â
  âHello, Fred. Hello, George.â
âHello, Hermione,â they said in unison.Â
âIâve got loads of homework to finish so could we talk later?â
  âNope.â
âFine. But for the record I donât know what you saw, it was late and⌠and it was really dark.âÂ
âWe have perfect vision the only thing we need to know is who it is,â Fred said.Â
âWe know you wonât tell us so weâve done a bit of thinking,â George continued.
âIt canât be Bill nor Charlie because you barely know them,â Fred observed.
âCanât be Percy because heâs a prat,â George continued.Â
âCanât be Ron because youâd have to be either stupid or crazy and as far as we know you arenât,â Fred added.Â
âIt canât be Ginny because weâre pretty sure that you arenât into girls,â George noted.Â
âAnd Iâve noticed something about you, Hermione. You can tell us apart unlike most people outside are family before we so much as breath so youâve obviously been observing us,â Fred finished.Â
âThen that leaves me and Freddie, here. Weâre two lovely gentleman and since we are completely identical it could be either one of us, so who is it,â George asked.Â
âItâs wonderful that the two of you have been thinking on it so much but Iâve got to go,â Hermione sprinted out of the Library and before they could catch up she disappeared. Hermione thought that was the end but this was far from over. The twins knew there was only one way to get her to confess.Â
Hermione was walking back to Gryffindor tower from Potions so she traveled one of the usually empty corridors. She wasnât paying attention which was extremely fortunate for Fred. He jumped in front of her from behind a statue.Â
  âHello, Hermione,â Fred said.Â
âHi, Fred,â Hermione returned while trying to step around him. Fred blocked her path then began to step towards her. With every step he took Hermione took another step backwards. They kept this up until Hermione hit the stone wall behind her.Â
âHermione, I know youâre keeping something from me and all you have to do is tell me,â he whispered.Â
âFred, I-I really donât want to do this,â Hermione whimpered.Â
âCome on, weâve known each other for a while, you can trust me,â Fred went on. Fred lifted Hermioneâs chin a bit so that she was staring into his eyes.Â
âW-Well, if you must know, I have gained a bit of a crush onâŚon you,â Hermione finally said.Â
âNow, thatâs a good girl.â Fred crouched down a few inches so that they could snog.Â
When the finally broke Fred said,â So, wanna go to Hogsmeade with me this weekend?â
âYes, I think thatâd be wonderful,â she replied breathlesslyÂ
This is a short story by John Knowles which later developed into the book A Separate Peace. Â I typed it up from my copy of it, so any mistakes are mine. Â Itâs really neat because some parts of it are in A Separate Peace word for word, some are slightly different and others were scrapped altogether. Â The bit in bold above the cut was written on the cover of the book.

Another reminder that you can enjoy the canon representation of a character whilst still enjoying the fandom version as well.
Liking Fannon aspects of a character does not make you a heathen unworthy of liking the source material.
On the same point you can also not read the source material and like a Fannon representation only. Thatâs your business and itâs fine.
Reading source material and not likening the Fannon does not make you better than anyone else. And openly trashing on something that gives other people joy is disgusting.
And yes I do read source material. So donât try and come for me on this shit.
Like what you like just donât be a dick about it.
