I’m worried about you. I wish I could say something that could snap you out of this. … Remember when we used to do our wishing game? We’d close our eyes, and we’d wish for something. Whatever we wanted. We both wished we could get bigger bedrooms. That was a big one. You would always wish for more protractors, which was weird. I would wish for a faster computer. Probably a faster modem, too. You would wish for better clothes. I didn’t really care about that. We both wished we could drive. I just wanted to drive away. We wanted to go on road trips. And eat lots of Sour Patch Kids that we would buy from gas stations.

✦ADHD is not a personality quirk
- some things that tag along with ADHD are:
~sensory processing disorder
~executive dysfunction
~poor fine motor skills
~sensory overloads (that lead to meltdowns)
~sensory seeking (self stimming)
~hyperfixations
~moderate to severe memory problems
~Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria- is an extreme emotional sensitivity and emotional pain triggered by the perception that one is being rejected, teased, or criticized. The emotional response is complete with suicidal ideation and people suffering from RSD often get misdiagnosed with serious personality disorders. RSD is only seen in people with ADHD and the emotional sensitivity/reaction is much more severe than that of a neurotypical person.
✦Some other “fun” ADHD things!
~inability to regulate emotions
~no concept of time
~noticeable public stimming (resulting in stares from neurotypicals)
~no impulse control
~insomnia
~listen but cannot absorb what is being said
~no volume control
~increased inability to focus when emotional
~difficulty stopping a task and transitioning to the next
~social anxiety
~higher levels on generalized anxiety
~extremely forgetful
~”all or nothing” mentality
@ neurotypicals- some things to be aware of:
- you cannot hyperfixate. only people who are neurodivergent can hyperfixate. please don’t use that word when describing your latest obsession :-)
- please don’t stare at neurodivergent people who are stimming in public
- be respectful of those who actually need fidget toys so they can subtly stim in public
- if we forget something you tell us it is not because we don’t care, we just have a million other thoughts racing through our mind and no way to filter through them.
- please be gentle with us. no don’t tip toe around us and treat us like we aren’t human, but be aware that even offhand comments can trigger RSD. no we aren’t being too sensitive, our brains are wired differently than yours.

When a computer gets hit with a kernel panic, there’s only so much you can do. An internal fatal error is hard to recover from. I mean, listen to that: internal fatal error. Sounds pretty fucking bad, you ask me.
Getting real fucking tired of people telling me that I have to be chill & that I can’t get angry when family members deadname/misgender me. I get that it takes time for people to get used to new names/pronouns, but I’ve been out as trans for almost a year now. You’ve had time. And now, when family members STILL get it wrong, it just feels like they don’t even care enough to try to use my correct name/pronouns. Ugh.
“Fiction affects reality!”
It does… but also it doesn’t, and certainly not on a one-to-one level. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had a staunch conservative/proto-fascist former friend recommend to me Lois McMaster Bujold’s books; he was quite in love with the military sci-fi aspect, but not so much the liberal outlook that her stories are steeped in. The same former friend also recommended to me Seanan McGuire’s books, which are also decidedly more on the liberal edge of things.
I wouldn’t have had to kick a Trump supporter off of my Discord server who basically saw my alternate history fic and was enamored to the point of joining, but ignored all of the liberal and leftist mindset I have steeped into it.
Going bigger, Paul Ryan, who is a political sociopath and hypocrite on a scale that is mind-boggling, liked to say that Rage Against The Machine was his favorite band–while the band members basically said that he was the personification of the machine they are raging against.
And how many hardcore conservatives willfully misinterpret Star Trek’s messages of inclusiveness and “we can be better”? Or Star Wars’ pointed comments on fascism and authoritarians? Or the mindset encapsulated by this picture?
So, yes, fiction can affect people’s mindsets. But it’s not a mold into which a mind is pressed, stamped out and formed into identical models, as some people seem to think it is. No, it is sowing seeds into fertile or barren ground, with the possibility of it taking root or not. And even then, what takes root there depends on how nurturing the existing environment is, and further cultivation.
who’s gonna tell tumblr that executive dysfunction is more than Not Doing Things?
