The lights of the city fade behind you, replaced by the glimmering stars scattered across the sky like diamonds on a velvet canvas. Another midnight ride with Dazai, you could feel the cool night air hitting your face. The wind soaring through your hair, and the music is at the max volume, echoing from the convertible car you two are in.

-Speeding up a little?

He proposes, his voice barely audible over the wind and the roaring engine. You nod, smirking as you continue to focus on the road ahead.

-Of course, why not?

As you push the pedal down, the car surges forward. The world blurs around you; it’s just the two of you in this moment, the freedom palpable and intoxicating.

-So, how's life? The mafia seems quite busy, don't ya think?

Dazai hums, resting his arms behind his neck. You roll your eyes, lighting up a cigarette before put it between your lips.

-Kinda. Some brats don't know their place. Runnin' round and causing troubles....

Blowing out a cloud of smoke, you could feel the nicotine rushing through your veins. Lazily threw a glare at him, you let out a sigh.

-Thanks to your beloved agency, I have a few more stacks of paper and more than three missions uncompleted. You detectives are too troublesome. Guess whose fault is it?

Dazai chuckled, feigning offence. Shrugging off your question with his usual sarcastic self, his brown eyes glinting with teasing amusement.

-Woah, don't blame it on me now. It's not my responsibility that the agency needs to take care of certain guys who are causing chaos in the city. And after all, you're still as feisty as always. It is, indeed, a good sign~

Dazai glances over, a mischievous grin on his face, and your lips can’t help but twitch slightly. Your gaze flicked up to meet his. A drop of silence falls over, with the whistles of the rustling leaves in the background.

And in this rare moment, you feel a strange sense of solace.

It's something more than that - something like content. Like... peace, the peace that your soul has been craving for too long.

-Hey...

Dazai hums, raising an eyebrow when he hears your quiet voice.

-Have you ever wondered what would we be like if we were just normal people?

You speak leisurely, the expression on your face softening - only in the slightest.

It's a hard question.

-I don't know.

Dazai stretch his limbs, caught you off guard. You have expected something... you don't know, something deeper from him?

All you received then was a wink at your sceptical gaze.

-Oi, just stop being an old woman, y/n. Loosen up a bit, will ya?

Once again, you can't help but crack a smile. Whatever, maybe you have lost your brain cells thinking that this insufferable bastard would actually be serious for once.

At least, in moments like now.
