Left to right: Saturn V (Apollo), SLS (being built by ULA for NASA, in development, won’t fly until 2019 at the earliest), Falcon Heavy in the center, BFR (first flight 2022 if we are lucky), and Falcon 9 with Crew Dragon capsule on far right. The SLS is huge but likely will not be able to send as large a payload to Mars (I searched but can’t find a specific figure for SLS payload to the surface of Mars) as the BFR which Elon stated will be 100 metric tons. And the SLS will cost about $1 billion dollars per launch and is not reusable. The BFR cost per launch will be a small fraction of that price and it will be fully reusable. The SLS is nuts and US taxpayers are paying for it. SLS first planned flight to Mars is 2033. BFR first planned flight to Mars is 2022. Both will likely slip, but no question in my mind that SpaceX will be first to Mars by about a decade.

How to get over past mistakes

1. Remind yourself that everyone makes mistakes, does things wrongs, and has moments of regret. There are no perfect people out there. In that sense, you are just the same as everybody else.

2. Remind yourself that “that was then, and this is now”. You can’t turn back the clocks and change what you did, but you can be a different person in the future.

3. Allow yourself to experience and name the feelings you are struggling with (regret, guilt, shame, disappointment, embarrassment, sadness, etc.) – then make the decision to let those feelings go. In the end, it’s unhealthy to become attached to them.

4. Ask yourself what you can learn from the situation. What would you do differently if you found yourself in that situation again? How can it change the person you are now (so that you feel better about yourself)?

5. Recognise that failings and mistakes are part of the growth process. It’s inevitable that you’ll encounter obstacles, challenges and failures throughout life. Don’t let that stop you from embracing life.

6. Remind yourself that “it was what you did, it’s not who you are.” Don’t allow any single event or experience to define you. You are more than what you did – so don’t allow part of your past to now become your identity. Don’t let it determine your destiny.

7. Give yourself the gift of a new start. Forgive yourself, decide to start again, and move on with your life with a fresh confidence.

One of the main reasons why you don’t make progress or why you are stuck in the vicious cycle of procrastination is the lack of courage to take that one small imperfect step. The more you are fixated on the end result, the less likely you are actually going to do something to achieve it.

A case in point of this so called ‘phenomenom’ is when you keep putting of you essay for a class you are taking. You keep convincing yourself that you have lots and lots of time to write it and suddenly your deadline is tomorrow. What do you usually do in these kinds of situations? I bet you usually open a new document and just start writing something, a quick draft, because you think you just need to get something done. In other words, you are actually just taking an imperfect step towards your end goal, which in this case is a finished essay. When you’ve taken your imperfect step, you often get this flow and just keep working and working until you are satisfied with your input. It seems surprisingly simple, right?

To summarise everything, you need to stop being so focused on the end result. The process is the most important part of your work and you can always edit and work on it later. An imperfect step is the most important step and more people need to realise this. If you have a long list of things to do or deadlines to meet, then just decide to start somewhere. Make that awful draft, scribble down something, make a mistake, just do something. Sooner or later, you are going to notice that you’ve made a great deal of progress. These imperfect steps are what you need in your life.

Since you guys asked me about my double column notes-taking method, here it is how it works. It’s very simple and easy to use when you want to repeat the subject before exams or when you have to study from a huge book text! :)
