Marius on the ruins of Carthage
“Like Marius in the ruins of Carthage, Chase thought, without any precise historical analogy in mind, as he stood in front of the marble fireplace and looked up at the spot where the painting of Kate’s mother would hang, once the boxes, trunks and crates had been opened and unpacked. Everything that he had owned in Ohio had been shipped to Washington. One way or another, he thought, he would be here to the end.”
This illustration was specifically inspired by Gore Vidal’s depiction and characterization of Chase in the novel Lincoln (which the excerpt above was taken from). Till now I have to say his character understanding of Chase is not entirely the same as mine, but his depiction was my earliest and most fascinating (though toxic af) inspiration for my version of Chase. I referenced and took inspiration from this painting of John Vanderlyn on such a subject and the comments here I found was quite interesting, and I believe Gore Vidal had meant to make this attempt lol!!
A little sketch I made.
》A little sketch that I did. I'm quite proud of it since realism isn't exactly something I am able to draw, but this turned out pretty, and I love it.《
Sketch of Lincoln, except my phone camera decided to focus weirdly
