Dating App

Alright, so when I started this it was meant to only be a cute little one shot but it kinda grew until I suddenly had ideas for how this entire thing could affect certain parts of Law and Order SVU and I wanted to write them and other cute ideas I got so it had become a series. Not sure how long it will be but yeah, I hope you all enjoy.

A Femreader x Rafael story. This will probably eventually have smut but it will be a few chapters.

The beginning

“Rafael, come on plenty of people are on dating apps,” Liv insisted. “Considering your working hours, you are unlikely to meet anyone without some assistances.”

“Liv, I really don’t have time for this,” Rafael sighed running his hand through his hair.

“You’re the one who told me you were feeling a little lonely,” Liv pointed out.

“I told you that once, when we had been drinking, don’t bring it up against me,”

“Sorry counsellor, you didn’t state it was unofficial,” Liv laughed. “Now hand over your phone, we’re doing this.”

Rafael sighed again, loud and childlike but he still handed over his phone before slumping against the back of the couch. He watched as Liv fiddled with his phone downloading the most popular of the apps and getting his profile started. Age, name and a brief description of him.

“What are you even writing? Old man, works long hours, sarcastic and boring,” he snorted.

“No, Rafa,” Liv rolled her eyes. She pulled out her phone and seemed to be sending something to his phone. “Thankfully, I have taken plenty of photos of you to add to this. Now just need to set your age and distance limits. Something else you let slip when you were drunk, is that you don’t mind women younger then you, so let’s set that age lower limit at 30.”

“I am never drinking with you again,” Rafael muttered.

“There, done,” Liv shoved his phone back at him. “Now have some fun with it, and keep me updated Rafa. I want to see you happy.” With that Olivia stood up and left his office, leaving Rafael with his phone opened on the app, the image of a young brunette woman staring up at him.

Rafael sighed, he clicked on her photo which took him through to her profile, he read through before swiping her to the left deciding he didn’t want someone who loved spending nights out on the town. He didn’t mind going out, but it wasn’t something he enjoyed doing every night especially with the long hours he worked. One or two profiles had caught his intrigue and he had swiped to the right with little hope that they would result in a match. The same process continued, he swiped a few more to the right but for the most part they were going to the left until he decided that was enough. His eyes lifted to look at the pile of work still sitting on the coffee table in-front of him. He swiped a hand down his face, swapping his phone for a file and got to work. He didn’t notice his phone lighting up with a new notification until hours later but seeing that it had to do with the dating app he swiped it away without even looking to see what it said, deciding to deal with it later.

It was another quiet day at the library, just some university students studying for exams and working on essays, parents hoping to get their children into reading and some elderly women checking out the latest erotic fiction. You had finished all your tasks for the afternoon, put away the returns, shelved some new books and done the rounds making sure everyone was behaving.

You fiddled on your phone staring at the dating app your friends had convinced you to download the other night after a few too many homemade cocktails. You hadn’t really used it yet but you were curious if nothing else, glancing around to make sure that no-one needed any obvious assistance. You pulled up the app, checking to make sure drunk you hadn’t made any odd choices with photos or the information in your profile. Happy with what you had seen you checked the age range and distance, you hesitated briefly at the upper limit of the age, biting your lip you left it as is. You did find men who were older than you to be quite…charming, at least some of them, apparently after a number of cocktails you weren’t afraid to admit it.

You spent a few minutes just swiping through, not finding much of anything, you swiped to the right for a few profiles two of them matching with you but you decided against messaging first. Their profiles didn’t strike you right away. You were about to give up when the next profile caught you. Your breathe hitched as you stared at the most mesmerising green eyes you had ever seen. A strong jawline was covered in a light covering of stubble, his lips were pulled up in a cocky grin, a thing that would normally be a turn off for you but the look in his eyes told you it wasn’t serious.

Rafael. That was his name. Rafael, aged 45. You bit your lip again, to stop the silly smile that was growing. You scrolled through some more of his photos, there were some candid ones of him having been caught smiling, some more serious ones of him looking over some files but whoever took the photos had been careful with anything that could identify his location. You looked through the information in his bio. Without hesitating you swiped to the right, not expecting anything of it only to be pleasantly shocked when your screen showed ‘It’s a match!’. You almost squealed in delight but refined. You were contemplating sending him a message but unfortunately work got in the way. The little old ladies had found the latest erotic fiction novels and all came up to the counter to borrow them out. It was rather adorable how they acted like school girls giggling about the latest story, you smiled along, thinking that you should introduce them to fantasy smut but decided against it. After finishing with the little old ladies, you heard some noise coming from the kids section, sighing you glanced sadly at your phone wishing your shift was over already so you could message Rafael.

Three hours later and you were finally able to start closing up the library, you yawned grabbing your belongings from the staff room. It was late at night and the city was just starting to show signs of winter. The night air was chilly coursing you to zip up your jacket and wrap your scarf around your neck before locking up the library doors. You stood under the awning of the building to pull out your phone to check for any notifications, you didn’t see anything from the app but opened it up to check if Rafael and you were still matched, grinning when you found his name in your matched list you pulled open the messages just knowing that you had to start talking with this man. You typed out several things, the generic open liners, but deleted them after scrunching your nose up at them. You opened back up to his profile, sarcastic and witty, works long hours, those words caught your attention and an idea hit you. You grinned, a light blush staining your cheeks as you type out the message.

‘You sound busy, any chance you’d add me to your to-do list?’ you closed your eyes and hit send. You felt an odd thrill go through you. You put your phone away, not wanting to stare at your phone all the way to your car waiting for a response. But the giddy feeling that had been in your chest since you matched with Rafael had not left you, it followed you all the way to your apartment and through your nightly routine. You were settling down on your couch, dinner and a glass of wine beside you, the latest book from your favourite author and your comfort show on in the background for noise when you finally decided to check your phone.

Rafael threw the last file down on the table and rubbed his eyes, this case had been doing his head in ever since Liv had brought it to him. Every case is a he said, she said situation but this one was a little bit more complicated than anyone had first thought. Looking at the time on his phone he realised more time had passed then he initially thought, his brow furrowed in confusion when he saw another notification from that app saying he had a new message. He debated just ignoring this notification as well but new Liv would hound him if she knew, and somehow she would find out.

He honestly didn’t know what he was expecting when he checked his matches but seeing the face of one of the profiles that had truly caught his intrigue, a young librarian who enjoyed curling up in-front of the tv with a good book was a pleasant surprise. It wasn’t his only match but it was the only one who had sent him a message. He clicked on it, anticipation flooding him in a way he hadn’t felt in a personal manner for a long time.

‘You sound busy, any chance you’d add me to your to-do list?’

Rafael couldn’t even stop the snort that left him if he had tried. He was not expecting a message like that but it was certainly an interesting opening liner. A little cheeky and showed that you looked at his profile enough to see that he worked long hours. He saw that you had sent it at least an hour ago. Your profile said you were a night owl, so he wondered if you would still be awake.

‘That could be arranged. However, there are some preliminary enquires that need to be addressed.’

“Preliminary enquires?” you muttered reading the response you had received just ten minutes ago. “What an interesting way to phrase that.”

You nibbled on your lip, wondering at whether you should continue the cheeky tone you had set or slightly alter it, you wanted to respond now in hopes that a true conversation could be started with Rafael. At least getting it to the point where you felt asking if he wanted to meet wouldn’t be too sudden. You decided to keep the cheeky tone, it was your initial response to his reply and you only wanted to present yourself as you truly were. You could be serious when needed but you enjoyed good banter that wasn’t forced and that is what you hoped would come of this.

‘Oh? Well, please do inform me of these preliminary enquiries, so they may be answered immediately.’

Ten minutes later Rafael’s phone buzzed on the table. He had started to tidy up his office, not wanting to come in tomorrow morning to papers and folders everywhere. It was the fastest he had ever dropped everything he was doing to look at his phone, butterflies fluttered slowly to life in his stomach when he saw that the notification was from the app. Without thought he opened it to check the message.

‘Oh? Well, please do inform me of these preliminary enquiries, so they may be answered immediately.’

“Well, she’s a bit cheeky,” Rafael smiled. “Right, first question…come on Rafael think.” He started pacing, trying to think of what he wanted to ask you first. The number of times that Rafael couldn’t think of something to say he could count on one hand, he knew what he wanted to ask but couldn’t think of an way interesting way to ask them. He sighed, deciding to just go for it and hoping for the best, the conversation could still flow.

’Basics first, I think. Those are always the most important I found. I know your profile says you prefer a night in to a night out but if you do go out how would a typical night go?’

You only had to wait a few minutes before a reply came through. Your phone was still in your hand, you didn’t want to let it out of your sight.

You smiled, it was a basic question but there was something about the way he asked it. Making sure to include information you already provided when asking for more details. You thought there might also be some hints to his job in the way he phrased the questions. Some type of law enforcement maybe? Or maybe journalism?

‘Of course, the basics. Hm, a typical night out for me. Well, you can’t go wrong with a good meal, a nice drink or two. Somewhere quiet where the music is only in the background, so you can hear yourself think or if you have good company can hear them ask the most important questions.’

You took a sip of your wine, you had heard from your friends that it is always a fifty-fifty with conversations on these apps but you had a good feeling about this. Maybe it was because of Rafael’s age or maybe it was just him. But you tried not to get your hopes up, there had only been two replies after all and some peoples stories started out fine until they got horrible.

‘As you say, the basics are important questions and it wouldn’t be entirely fair if the burden lies only on you. So, your preferred drink?’

You quickly typed out your own question and sent it through.

Your response was quick to his question. He had just finished reading your answer, as he made his way out of the building and towards the car waiting for him. He smiled, your typical night out matching his perfectly. He found your slight tease about how he phrased his question further enlightening to your personality and the type of person you were. Someone he could easily, hopefully, banter with, who would enjoy light teasing.

‘As you say, the basics are important questions and it wouldn’t be entirely fair if the burden lies only on you. So, your preferred drink?’

Rafael laughed as your next message came through, asking a question of your own. He has happy, he had been a little worried that the conversation would be a little one sided rather than a true back and forth.

‘It seems you share the same kind of typical night out I prefer to have, when work allows. And how kind that you would consider sharing the burden. My preferred drink is a good scotch.’

Rafael sent through his reply finding it easier to respond now, knowing that you were waiting for his message. He had heard some of the younger lawyers complain about the difficulty with conversation flow on dating apps and he was concerned that that would occur but you not only messaged him first you also eagerly participated. He decided to add to the banter, wanting to show more of his personality.

‘What are some of your hobbies? I am however, going to guess that books are on that list.’

Two messages come through in quick succession. You eagerly opened your phone to read them. You were becoming more and more certain that you had lucked out with this man. You were allowing yourself to get your hopes up just a little. You had a few notifications come through of other matches and a few messages but you ignored them.

‘It seems you share the same kind of typical night out I prefer to have, when work allows. And how kind that you would consider sharing the burden. My preferred drink is a good scotch.’

‘What are some of your hobbies? I am however, going to guess that books are on that list.’

“Cheeky man,” you giggled, taking another sip of wine.

‘I just knew you were a scotch man, what with your fancy suits, Rafael. I feel like I should be a little insulted that you could just assume that I like books but considering my job and the fact that one of my photos includes my bookshelves I kinda can’t.’

‘My other hobbies include binge watching tv, I do enjoy cooking and baking especially when I am doing it for others, I also enjoy a nice walk through the park especially in this kind of weather. I am curious, though what are your hobbies? If your work allows for such things.’

“Oh, you did, did you?” Rafael grinned as he started his got home from work routine, which included getting out of his suit, into comfy clothing and rifling through his fridge for something to eat. He couldn’t explain why he felt a spark, a jolt when he read his name in your message, he desperately wanted to hear you say his name. “Shit, Liv is never going to let me forget this.”

‘Hm, I feel there is no connection between my suits and my preferred drink but perhaps you could correct me? It is good you find you can’t feel a little insulted that I guessed reading was a hobby of yours, as I did not intend it that way.’

‘Baking alludes me but I can cook the odd meal, my Mami ensured it. I am a little behind with most TV shows but I enjoy having them on in the background whilst I am working. I can partly agree with walks through the park but definitely not with this weather the cold does not agree with me, I much prefer summer. My work does limit my time for hobbies but when I have the time I enjoy seeing musicals at Broadway, trying new restaurants and distilleries.’

Rafael sent through those two replies as he took a sip of scotch, waiting for his food to reheat. He tapped his foot on the floor as he tried to think of another question. His blank phone stared up at him accusingly. He wanted to leave asking about baking and your favourite books until you meet in person, he wanted to see the spark in your eyes as you talked about it all. A new notification destroyed his concentration, he glanced at his phone, you had responded. Quicker than before.

Rafael sent through two messages, both made you smile. You wondered if you could use his snarky response to your tease about his suits and his favourite drink as a way to ask him out. He seemed to be a little concerned that you did feel insulted by his jab and made sure you knew he did not intend it that way. You thought that was incredibly sweet of him and you really wanted to hear his voice and to see if his eyes sparkled when he was being cheeky.

When you read that he could cook but not bake an image of the two of you in a kitchen appeared in your mind without permission. It was a sweet little domestic scene, of you baking some cupcakes while trying to teach him. You quickly banished that from your mind, no interest in allowing your hopes to get that high, though…it was innocent enough. You allowed yourself to think of what kind of meal his mother had taught him, maybe one that he would make for you.

“No, stop!” you cursed yourself. “No need for that brain, stop it.”

‘Perhaps I could correct you while you show me your most recent favourite restaurant?’

You hit send the second you had finished the question. You didn’t want to second guess yourself, you blinked at your phone before throwing it to the opposite end of your couch. You drowned the rest of your wine while standing up, you started pacing around your living room trying to get out some of the anxious energy that filled you up. You hadn’t even addressed anything else he said in his messages. You nibbled you lower lip, hoping that you hadn’t been too quick to ask him too meet up. Maybe you should have dragged it out longer. But you thought it was the perfect time to ask. Though maybe he wasn’t hinting that he wanted to meet when he said that you could correct him. You heard your phone buzz the sound causing you to freeze, your eyes wide as you turned to stare at where it sat. Waiting for you. With his answer. Christ you had no idea why you were acting this way, you had only been messaging him for a total of an hour but you couldn’t help it. He was not only incredibly handsome but his messages were witty, they sounded sincere, he clearly had read your profile entirely and gone through all of your photos and you wanted to meet him.

‘Perhaps I could correct you while you show me your most recent favourite restaurant?’

Rafael stared at your message. He closed out of the app and reopened it, checking to make sure he wasn’t imagining the question. And yep, there it was staring at him. You asking him to meet up. You wanting to meet him. You wanting him to take you to a restaurant he had enjoyed recently. That showed that you had read his messages but you hadn’t responded to them like you had before.

“She didn’t waste any time,” he muttered ignoring his microwave as it beeped at him. “Cute.”

He typed out his response with no hesitation now that he knows the message wasn’t going to randomly disappear.

‘A good meal and a beautiful woman who is showing signs of being excellent company that desires to correct me? I can’t think of a better way to spend an evening. Would you be free tomorrow evening?’

“Oh,” you whispered looking down at his reply. “Tomorrow?”

You quickly opened up your calendar app, this time you did squeal a little at seeing that tomorrow was completely empty of any plans. It was the start of your weekend. You quickly flicked back to Rafael’s message.

‘I’m available tomorrow evening. Maybe 7:30?’

Rafael grinned. He quickly blocked out his evening on his work and phone calendar. He did not want to leave an option for any last minute meetings to be added tomorrow. He didn’t answer right away, needing to work out which restaurant he wanted to take you too first. He thought one of the cozier ones would suit you, especially for a first meeting, he could save the others for later dates. He mentally slammed on the breaks at that thought.

“No use getting ahead of yourself Rafael,” he muttered flicking through the list of restaurants on his phone. “You haven’t even meet the woman yet.”

‘7:30 sounds perfect. Have you been to Sunset? It’s a cozy restaurant along the water?’

“He wants to go somewhere cozy?” you asked giggly. “Sunset…Oh! That’s that cute place that opened up earlier this year.”

You eagerly agreed to the place locking it in your calendar when Rafael responded that he would see you there and that he was sorry that he couldn’t continue messaging you but sleep beckoned him. The smile didn’t leave your face all night, and the giddy feeling that followed you into sleep was there the moment you woke up.
