The Way Heartstopper Talks About Mental Health Is So So Important To Me. "love Can't Cure Mental Illness".

the way heartstopper talks about mental health is so so important to me. "love can't cure mental illness". charlie having to write down how he's feeling so he can talk about it. the pain of struggling & also the pain of loving someone who's struggling. having to wait so long to get in to see a doctor. the anger & shutting down.

i have so much love for the kindness & directness with which this show showcases mental health.

one thing i wish ableds would remember is that, unfortunately disability doesn't magically pause for holidays, special events, or celebrations. just because it happens only once a year or you saved up for it doesn't mean that people are not disabled. the fact that a member of your group is disabled should have been included in the planning in the very first place because we can't just wing it or push through.

There's a phenomenon in left-wing circles where initially reasonable statements and concepts get repeated ad nauseum until they not only lose their meaning but transform into deeply bigoted ideas.

The idea "there is no single white culture," is true because white is a concept created to describe the powerful position in Western societies. There are many different cultures, who's members are often white. But this idea became "white people have no culture" which is just not true, deeply dehumanizing, and harmful, especially to people who look white but experience marginalization because of their culture.

Another example might be cultural appropriation, which perhaps should be understood as a misrepresentation or exploitation of the cultural practices of another, especially where the person exploiting does so for personal gain, without acknowledgment. But now, people have basically transformed this into "when somebody does something from a culture they weren't raised in" or "when a particular race or ethnicity behaves in a way that's different from how they normally do" which promotes racial and cultural stereotypes and attempts to control the behaviors of people based on their race, ethnicity, and culture.

i was in a thrift shop the other day and they were playing the most unsettling variations of normal christmas music, culminating in this rendition of the 12 days of christmas except it was like 12 guys all singing over each other and going “no!” and interrupting the lyrics with random other phrases until they deadass just started singing 5 golden rings to toto’s africa. can anyone confirm that this is a real song and not that i stroked so hard i astral projected into a universe where everything is somehow worse than it is here

there’s nothing shameful about making things easier or more accessible for yourself btw.

if your disability means you can rarely/never cook so you have to order out a lot, or buy precut ingredients, or if you need other people to help you cook even “simple” meals.

if your disability means you struggle with personal hygiene so you don’t shower standing up, or don’t brush & floss “correctly” or long enough, or put up your hair when you can’t handle brushing it.

if your disability means you’re not able to engage in your hobbies in a “normal” or “correct” way. if you have to watch movies multiple times because your brain fog is making it hard to follow the plot. if you need accessibility tools to be able to draw or paint. if you have to do everything from bed.

you’re not doing anything bad or wrong. you’re being kind to yourself and caring for yourself in the ways that you’re able to. it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

I’m so fucking tired of being stared at for using a mobility aid. I get it I’m young, you have no fucking clue how aware I am of how young I am with a mobility aid, but that doesn’t give you permission to stare at me. Would you stare if I was old? Or, would you deem it normal and acceptable. Disabled people are not your entertainment or your pity story. Stop staring.
