Here are some small actions you can take to protect the environment that aren't just "recycle more and drive less!"

The big environmental actions aren't always accessible for a lot of reasons, so here are some other ideas!

1. Pick up trash you see in ditches to prevent it from being washed into water sources!

2. Cut the straps of disposable masks you throw away so they don't get caught around animals necks!

3. Keep track of your pencils/chapstick/pens and use the same one for as long as you can!

4. Don't buy NFTs! Non-fungable tokens, or NFTs, are huge electricity wasters.

5. After Halloween, take your pumpkins to local forests/wildlife shelters and leave them for the deer to eat instead of throwing them out!

6. Collect rainwater! You don't need a huge rainbarrell or anything to do this! I use cups and after a few rainfalls I have enough water for my houseplants for the year!

7. Bring a reusable cup with you to coffee shops when possible! (Covid restrictions can make this tricky so be sure to check with the shop!)

8. When you go to beaches leave seashells where you find them, especially in areas where the tide will come in. Animals use those for protection from predators! Take all the seaglass you want though :)

9. If you have enough space for a clothesline, dry your clothes in the sun when possible!

10. Donate or sell old clothes you don't wear anymore, or share them with your friends and family!

11. Instead of throwing away old clothes, mend them or use them for scrap material! Here are a few tutorials for how to fix clothing!

12. Plant flowers that attract bees and butterflies!

13. Shop small and secondhand when possible! Most small busineses are better with managing waste than larger corporations.

14. Repurpose! There are tons of ways you can repurpose stuff you'd otherwise throw out! Google "recycled crafts" for some cool examples! I personally do a lot of scrap booking which saves some smaller items, and I reuse containers to keep stuff organized! One of my favourite examples is how you can use boiling water to soften the very bottom of a candle, melt it, and make a new candle!

15. Carpool! You and a friend have the same classes? Go to school together! Your friend needs something from a store close to your destination? Drop them off on the way! You'll end up saving on gas money and collectively using less fuel!
