I love it! Thank you so much (and that is a very dignified chapeau of high revolutionary pedigree)!!!
For your daily sketch, could you draw Kuvira in a Soviet Red Army uniform from the Russian Civil War (pointy hat at your discretion)?
Daily Kuvira #9
I hope I was accurate. I’m not the best when it comes to historical fashion. hhhhh
Look, @coppermarigolds, Space Kuvira rides again!
The most passive-aggressive move Star Wars’s tie-in novels ever made toward their scifi franchise competition: the cover artists started drawing the evil Admiral Daala in a very similar way to Voyager’s Captain Janeway.
This is something Trek fans have been arguing about since Discovery was announced. While the high production values of a limited-run can’t be beat, there are a lot of areas where the storytelling style of serials struggles. With serials, you can’t really have many low-stakes “monster of the week” episodes or put different sets of characters together for an episode to explore their interactions. Everything in the show has to contribute to THE ARC. There’s also the problem where these shows don’t have the time to experiment or retool elements if things aren’t working. If a relationship falls flat on the screen or if an antagonist doesn’t come out right and you’ve built your scripts around them, too bad.
I think TV show producers need to stop making shows with 13 or fewer episode seasons. I don’t know why they think it’s such a good idea.
Notice that good shows like ATLA or Star Wars: TCW are longer 20+ episode seasons because they have more time to think and draw things out while 13 episodes feels like a rushed mess like Voltron and Legend of Korra.
You know she had to do it to ‘em (by “them” I mean “the Teplans,” and by “it” I of course mean “virus-bomb their homeworld with super-HIV as punishment for rebellion, and also because it’s kinda funny”). She’s a real sweetheart, folks.
my new favorite timelines discourse is the recent critiques on the forums about this week’s new artwork, like how the diseased changeling founder’s flakes just don’t look quite flakey enough

I’ve always been very reluctant to equate Kuvira to either Chaing or Mao. Part of the problem is that if you start looking for 1:1 historical analogies in fantasy worlds you end up developing tunnel vision you miss out on what the writer is actually trying to do with their setting. The other issue is that Bryke never really made it clear what Kuvira’s beliefs and ideology were beyond a few speeches and a handful of background details that don’t entirely fit together. Back when B4 was airing the revelation of the Earth Empire’s internment camps caused a stir in the fandom (at least among the Kuvira fans), since there was literally nothing in Kuvira’s backstory or behavior to explain why she would be an ethnic chauvinist. This old blog post took an interesting tack by discussing Kuvira’s context in the world history of Avatar and suggesting that she might be closer to Kemal Atatürk than any figure from modern Chinese history. (There’s also some neat discussion of the personal and political relationship between Kuvira and Suyin too!)
A piece I did for avatarfanzine - Children of the Earth zine, which if you pre-ordered it, should be getting it real soon. I wished Kuvira would’ve had a longer season to shine a lot more. She genuinely saw herself as the hero of the people.
Esther, speaking as a big ol’ Star Trek fan, your friends were right. Season 1 was rough. A lot of the time it comes off as an attempt to make a 1960s-era Trek show in the 1980s, and it does not work at. all. Production was also a nightmare, to the point where the TNG writers’ room gained the reputation as one of the worst places a writer in Hollywood could work at. There’s a documentary called Chaos on the Bridge that discusses some of what went on, but it has its own biases and axes to grind. Still, Season 1 TNG did give us this incredible moment. (cw: more gore than you’d ever expect to see on an episode of Star Trek) If you ever want to give the show another shot, I’d recommend just watching any episode whose summary sounds cool. TNG was made with an eye to syndication, so the writers were discouraged from any heavy serialization. Anyway, great podcast, and I hope Madiha has recovered from finally seeing the Super Best Friends stumble their way into one of the worst (in all senses of the word) endings for Detroit: Become Human.
