About Willow, and the difference between forgiving and forgetting

Something I've noticed about Willows' characterization and that I genuinely liked is that she does not FORGET and she certainly isn't gullible.

If Gus struggles with not knowing what to expect from people, and doesn't seem to know who he can call a friend & trust & who he can't, lacking restrait and giving himself away too easily, Willow seems much more balanced.

See Willow is amazingly kind, she's compassionnate, she knows just how to offer support, she's forgiving and believes in second chances. She ISN'T however someone who FORGETS. She has a great balance of forgiving but also keeping herself safe & establishing boundaries. She's willing to give others a second chance and see how things will turn out but she won't go all out & 100% undoubtedly believe that they mean well or won't hurt her (whether they mean to or not). And that might be a detail but the TOH crew has conveyed it amazingly and I really like the moments where we see this aspect of her.

Concrete examples I can think of :

In Follies at the Coven Day Parade, we see for the first time Willow & Amity hanging out on one on one. They are rekindling their friendship after all, so this was important to see. And here, as usual, Willow shows that she's a great friend. She lets Amity come in, she listens carefully to her, she gives advice and she's helpful. No visible bad blood in how she treats Amity. She's willing to make this work ! She asks Amity to braid her hair and doesn't seem in a hurry to make her leave.

But when Amity herself rejoice at how everything is (apparently) as it was and how happy she is to have this back, we see Willow herself simply... hums and not answer, seeming pensive. Which shows that NO everything isn't as it was. Willow isn't trying to take up where things left off : this is a NEW start. They are trying to create something new, but that doesn't mean that Willow has forgotten what happened. She is simply giving Amity a second chance, and doesn't confuse the two.

In today's ep Labyrinth Runners, when the Hexside students find Hunter & heal him; they aren't sure if they can actually trust him. They want GUS back, so much so that one of the teacher proposes handing Hunter over to the Scouts in exchance for Gus, since they clearly want him.

Hunter is visibly scared by this proposition and start to slightly panick, and he scrambles to find a way to prove he's on their side. While he does so, we see Willow in the background passively listening. And she DOESN'T INTERCEDE IMMEDIATLY IN HIS FAVOUR. If you look carefully, Willow herself isn't convinced by this whole situation...

Up until Hunter mentions the "breathing thing" that Gus taught him. At this point, her eyes visibly widens.

And then she starts to vouch for Hunter, explaining that they can trust him. Because THAT is objective proof that Hunter & Gus were hanging out, for an extended amount of time, on friendly terms. You don't show someone how to calm down during an anxiety/panick attack if that someone is currently trying to capture you.

Willow might have forgiven Hunter, and chat with him and be kind & compassionnate to him. But she is CAREFUL with her trust, and won't automatically believe him, even if she thinks he deserves a second chance and appreciates him. She strikes a healthy balance, by being willing to be Hunter's friend but ALSO not forgetting what happened last time she hung out with him.

And I just think that showing these details, and showing it as okay is a great lesson. You can be amazingly kind & compassionnate while still protecting yourself. You can hang out with people and appreciate them and have fun with them all while keeping up healthy boundaries to make sure you won't get hurt again. This is good, and Willow is doing great for herself.

Luz remembered what the collector said differently.

In "Edge of the World" she recalled it being "let's slash and rend and crush and bruise, let's curse the land in nine bright hues". In "Hollow Mind", it was "we'll play together me and you, when we paint the land in nine bright hues".

This also happened in "Follies at the Coven Day Parade" where she remembered her mom telling her to never go back to the boiling isles but in "Yesterday's Lie" she actually told Luz to promise her to stay home and that she'll swear things will be different.

It's no surprise that she remembered those two events differently since they were both pretty emotional moments and plus human memory isn't perfect.

I know someone has said this before and that a lot of people figured it out but I thought it was still a cool detail.

Seeing as the size of all these people's skull hat is very similar to King's... Who is 8 years old

It's very likely that they are simply using the characteristics they have seen the most in the titans they've killed. Titans of King's size, meaning... children. Lots of children. They've killed so much of them that a child's way of speaking has legit become a titan characteristic and a standart way of recognizing them.

First off, this dude sucks

Great, but I can't stop thinking about his description of the titans. Titans have huge appetites, desire to be monarchs, and say 'weh'.

Titans say 'weh'.

I was under the impression that King just said 'weh' because he's young and kids make weird noises all the time. But no.

This crazy ass little man is really trying to tell us that a full grown massive titan would say 'weh'.

Now that we know the Golden Guard role was likely Belos’ 100% invention (Wittebro is never shown with that mask, even though such a thing would be VERY important to Philip if he did wear it), who wants to bet the Golden Guard sigil, AKA the Gravesfield crest, was all Belos’ idea as well?

After all, Wittebro doesn’t wear a cloak and while it’s possible he has the Gravesfield insignia stitched onto the back of his shirt... Given how the episode ends with Hunter rejecting the cloak and what it means after working so hard to obtain it, y’know. And I can see Wittebro wanting to leave behind his bigoted past, while Philip desperately clings on.

So he imposes a reminder of Gravesfield onto his brother’s back in a sense; A harsh reminder that this is who you REALLY are, this is where you actually came from, and this is your real home. You’re a witch hunter operating on behalf of Gravesfield; Act like it. And at the same time, Philip is forcing his brother to earn back the right to be considered a member of Gravesfield, of the human community, due to being a traitor who rejected home and consorted with witches, even embracing the imagery of their home in death with a pose that mimics the Titan’s.

And it’s telling that in his attempts to ‘reclaim’ his brother as he should’ve been, Philip made a mask for his clones as Wittebro did to him; Because he wants to start over as kids and have his brother join in the fantasy with him this time. And maybe trying to pay his brother back, in gratitude; Or just relieving himself from the obligation of debt, or flex the reversal of positions and thus power Belos has by being the one to bestow gifts and a masked identity (that defines your role as a witch hunter) this time.

Nobody talk to me I just now realised now that Belos is a Puritan, who were known for living simple lives and having very simple places of worship (for example no stained glass windows or anything like that), that has Catholic style imagery around him.

The stained glass, the tapestries, the white and gold, the theme of wings, the grand building, it’s all typically associated with Catholicism which I’ve seen a lot of people notice. He’s betrayed his simpler, Puritan origins. Maybe it’s intentional, maybe it’s not but it really says wonders about his character to me. He still holds his core Puritan beliefs, but he’s taken it to a point they aren’t recognisable anymore, buried beneath the thing Puritans like himself hated.

This also matches his whole human-witch thing. He still calls himself human, but he can hardly be compared to one anymore: he’s practically a witch. He, once again, still believes in something but it’s buried beneath the thing he hates, and in this case it’s witchcraft/witches.

I know I’m overanalysing but here me out. In this essay I’ll-

I’ve seen takes that are like “do we need to label every platonic boy and girl relationship as being like siblings, can’t they just be friends?” And these takes are correct, we do need more of these relationship to be defined as friendship. BUT Luz and Hunter are the pinnacle of a sibling dynamic, I could not describe them in any other way.

The last time they saw each other, they parted ways on very tense terms, Hunter threatening her with a staff and Luz sadly admitting that he wasn’t her friend but just a servant of Belos. And then immediately afterwards he defended her from Kiki, a distraction she used to escape with the palismen. They never addressed their last interaction ever again.

In Eclipse Lake, Hunter is dealing with the failure of his last mission. He could have resented Luz for being the reason he failed, but he doesn’t. He only blamed himself. The extent of Hunter’s anger towards Luz in that episode seems to be that she’s been going around calling him a “bad but sad boy” which embarrasses him. And in turn, Luz’s description of Hunter to Eda seems to be of a similar opinion. Nothing she says about him comes across as resentment. But she’s clearly poking fun at him, just a little.

And then the next time they interact, it’s Luz annoying him with emoji-filled texts, as though they’re buddies. And he’s pissed about it and yet he doesn’t ignore it or block her. (Idk if he knows how to block people but him replying with “LEAVE ME ALONE” is so very big brother-ish of him.)

And then when Luz saw him in town and needed to talk with him, her first instinct was to TACKLE HIM TO THE FUCKING GROUND (self explanatory) and then he’s all in a huff and it’s like he was about to win at Mario kart and Luz deliberately fucked it up for him. And THEN he tears off his mask because it’s just Luz and he really doesn’t give a shit about upholding his persona for her. Luz doesn’t need to know that she has angered the Golden Guard but Luz DOES need to know that Hunter thinks she’s an asshole.

And then they’re in the mindscape and Hunter manages to stay pissed off at her for like less than a minute before he gets bored of being mad so they just start chatting casually about how mindscapes work and he sees something cool and he’s like “HOLY FUCK LUZ LOOK AT THIS” because that’s just how they operate.

The way Luz smirks at him when he’s being cutesy with Flapjack, the way Hunter smugly nudges her when he thinks she’s been proven wrong. The way these two kids have legitimate reasons to despise each other but they just don’t. Neither hold serious grudges as they’d rather just bicker about petty shit and then buddy it up two seconds later. It’s like.

They’re best friends. They both think the other is the most annoying person on the planet. They would do anything to protect each other. They would break into a fist fight if given the option.

What the fuck could I possibly call them but siblings??

Diversity wins! A formless chaotic spirit that who is helping an insane old man in his plan for world domination and wants to destroy an entire civilization in exchange for ultimate power uses canonically He/They pronouns!!

Freezerburn i'm sorry, there are few RWBY conversations I have loved more than Weiss & Yang's in V5, i loved them so much in this volume and they still have a chokehold on me. i love them so much also they would absolutely not divorce come on i know "weiss ice queen" jokes have not died out but Weiss has gotten so much softer, also her & Yang have never had a strong disagreement and she'll defend her with her life.

Blake & Sun/Blacksun i wasn't particularly invested in the ship for V1-V3 but Blake really needed help & a steadfast presence in V4-V5 as well as some sunny optimism and Sun was there for her so yeah i'm sorry i still love them so goddamn much. also, he just had so much impact on Blake in general by finally geting her to accept her friends' help and stop making choices for them. he might lacks tact but come on he cares for her it's dishonest to argue the countrary. BLAKE HAS TWO HANDS IF THAT'S WHY YOU DISLIKE SUN. JUST SAYING.

Blake & Yang (V1-V5) i really like their relationship, i loved Burning the Candle & i don't have any problems with Bumbleby fundamentally. however i would have liked more for the resolution of their V5 conflict (like a soft & deep convo similar to what Yang & Weiss had, or Lumity in last week's ep if you watch it too). Just my preference. All that Matters is a song I absolutely love, but for me it's not a love song but a very sad one and I would have wanted another resolution than the one we got.

Penny & Ruby (V1-V3) absolutely loved Ruby's acceptance of Penny in the earlier volume. set such an important tone for our redhead sweetheart. last volume soured the relationship for me because of the whole "now you have a flesh body" plot, and taking decisions for Penny (even if well-meaning) in a volume where she struggled with agency. i'm sorry.

So congratulations on that & also on collecting this proof when you are yourself not even convinced by Darius's nice guy act.

AND IF I MAY ADD UPON IT, considering now that it is VERY likely Darius is working with Raine based on this cute little abomination (particularly with the little bun at the top. Darius is so extra in how he molds his abominations, I love it)

I THUS went back to Eda's Requiem to check for a few things

Raine wasn't restrained BUT we've just learned that they can do some bard magic simply by whistling : meaning, as long as their mouth is free. So do we hear some whistling when they escape ? ANSWER : apparently no. HOWEVER this made me notice a few other things & pay closer attention.

We see that Darius & Eberwold overall get along well. I think some people were of the complete opposite opinion but I don't really get that ? They just have the vibe of "ugh i can't believe i hang out with you" which is still very much some kind of friendship, especially considering Darius' overall personnality. They hang out together even when there is no need (ie. Any Sport in a Storm)

CONSIDERING THIS : would or could Eberwolf be in on this whole "rebellion" thing ? Here are some points :

Eberwolf turning higher the sound of their Scroll. For a first time watching, it makes perfect sense as simply them annoying Darius, who also plays into this idea. HOWEVER, the scroll after that is very loud honestly. So loud that it could easily mask... say a whistling sound ? Or even just some noise of goop moving around as Raine struggles to free itself ? Of course, it isn't enough to completely mask it, and Eberwold wouldn't have to hide from Darius if they are both in this rebellion thing together. IT COULD however be a good argument in the "plausible deniability" case, if Raine had indeed managed to escape for why Darius & Eberwold didn't hear them as soon as they tried. I think it's a possibility worth considering

Now this alone isn't what made me consider the idea, but rather Eberwolf's face when it seems that Raine has escaped. They seem... utterly unbothered or even maybe a tad... satisfied ? It's hard to tell because their character emotes differently from others, I don't know if Eberwolf does show strong emotions (haven't seen enough of him). But still... it's peculiar.

Darius as well, seems surprised at the sound but only that. Neither of them seem to be in a hurry to catch up to Raine either. And even resent Kikimora's involvement.

Conclusion : I'm super excited to learn more ! Things keep getting better & more enjoyable for fans who wonder, dig a bit & ask themselves questions and that is SO. COOL.

Okay look, I don’t trust Darius

and I don’t necessarily buy his nice-guy act at the end of ASiaS, but.

Assuming that

a) he’s being genuine, and

b) some of y’all’s predictions about him defecting later in the season are right,

I do just want to point something out from the end of Eda’s Requiem.

So here’s Raine at the end of the episode, yeah? All nice and immobilized by Darius’ goop. Their hands are restrained, their viola is broken - best we can tell, they have no way to use magic at this moment, or to otherwise escape.

The scene shifts to Darius complaining about Eber loudly watching the Owl fam’s stream. While the camera is turned away from Raine, there’s a sudden splooshy noise and…

… Raine has somehow, miraculously extricated themself from what seemed like very secure bonds, and is now running away.

They are then, of course, immediately recaptured by Kikimora, but Darius at least complains about her presence, insisting he and Eber ‘didn’t need help’.

In summary, I’m not saying that Darius 100% tried to let Raine escape after they were captured - but, I’m also not 100% saying he didn’t.

Them's the Breaks, Kid Appreciation Post

Basically : HOW DOES TOH CREW MAKE EVERYONE SO ADORABLE & ENJOYABLE I CAN'T. This episode was genuinely so sweet, it was like eating a bunch of marshmallow. I love them so much. I spent the whole ep squealing & sobbing because they are so cute

And the fact that we get this whole episode for the sole reason that Luz is feeling down and so Eda shares with her some good memories because she knows Luz love this kind of stories... ;;

I was saying that I wanted Luz to have a break after Reaching Out, some sweet time to recover with cute Raeda memories and that's EXACLTY WHAT HAPPENED don't touch me I'm feeling so soft

And OMFG Darius is in league with Raine ?? THIS IS SO FREAKING AMAZING. Actually I think someone had made theories about that, even based on Eda's Requiem. Need to find that post & reblog to applaud their brains.

i love how Yang, Nora and Penny, Tyrian are all in the same case but for very different reason. Yang & Nora are just chaotic & over the top as usual. As always, some characters are in more than one spot :P The greyed out ones mean it sort of applies but they fit better in another category, but I didn’t really go in depth with that (like the people in *cries over cube* all would try to solve it first)

I think all of these are pretty spot on, just the image of Ironwood, Ruby & Ilia crying over the cube because that's one more thing going wrong along with everything else in their life feels both sad, very fitting and absolutely hilarious I'm sorry

Ren, Ozpin & Pyrrha accept the cube as it is absolutely. Just full-on headpats for the cube. "It's okay if you're difficult it's not your fault" ebsligs

Mercury doesn't understand why the cube isn't solving itself, he shares it with Emerald who has the same reaction. Then Mercury smashes it.

I think Watts would try to solve it at first since he's so proud of his intellect but as soon as it's looking like he won't be able to he's gonna hand it off to someone else and pretends he didn't struggle and never cared about it.

Nora smashes then eats the cube, she has standarts. Meanwhile Yang smashes AND burn the cube. Then use it as training practice, let's so how fast she can throw it at someone. Still burning of course.

Jaune & Oscar are well-adjusted young boys who ask for help when they need it. Ironwood uuhm. Might. Before or after starting to cry is debatable though -

Blake, Salem & Winter all have better stuff to do.

Weiss tries & probably succeed at solving the cube. And now I'm decreeting that she solved it with Penny; after Penny solved it 3 times, put it back together and then gave it to her. BOOM Weiss/Penny interaction i'm so good at this
