A jumping spider lifer for me! I initially caught a glimpse of her while trying to photograph a bee and thought she was a mutillid. That was until she peeked back out of the leaves to watch what I was doing! She was an excellent model, turning in all directions and moving slowly and calmly so I could get the best photos I could. It's almost like she knew what was happening!

Aside from maybe Joro Spiders, this is one of the largest spiders I find in my area. I almost stepped on this girl while I was circling a tree, and she shot out of the leaves and scared the crap out of me! She was a wonderful model, though, unlike her cousins the White-banded Fishing Spiders (Dolomedes albineus) who are hateful and cannot sit still.

Asian Oak Weevil (Cyrtepistomus Castaneus), Taken May 25, 2025, In Georgia, US

Asian Oak Weevil (Cyrtepistomus castaneus), taken May 25, 2025, in Georgia, US

A little oak weevil resting in the bend of a leaf! I happened to see this guy through a small gap in the leaf and turned it over to find this cute scene! He may be sleeping, as the weather was quite spotty and poor to travel in, but he could also just be chill like that. C. castaneus was introduced to the US from Japan in the early 1900s and has since spread throughout the Eastern US and SE Canada. They are considered invasive in some states due to native foliage damage brought on by infestations. Their patterning is quite variable—this is actually the first gray one I've ever found. Usually they're a matte brown for me, but they can also be nearly white. Many even have yellow or teal sides, which can faintly be seen in this individual, though not as brightly as some.

Two I-mark leaf beetles mate on a green stem, photo taken from a side view. The beetles are a blood orange colour, with thick black markings on the top of their bodies. They have oblong black eyes, and a black underbelly and legs. One beetle is mounted on the other, connecting the ends of their abdomens together.

They stopped after I took this photo, I embarrassed them

She lost her pants!!! You can clearly see the difference between old and new exoskeleton on this individual, which is very cool! The new exoskeleton is still soft, evident by the iridescent sheen and rounded appearance of the segments. As the exoskeleton hardens, it will become darker and rougher, eventually looking identical to the old one, just a tad larger!

Assorted crayfish faces! These are both most likely Variable Crayfishes (Cambarus latimanus), though I do not know anything about crayfish ID so I don't want to assume anything lol. As it warms up I plan to spend more time catching salamanders and crayfish, though it can be a bit painstaking if they're smart. Once i got them into the container I was using for photos, I had to use a stick to gently push them to the edge to get my macro lens close enough. They behaved well, but it took forever!

My beautiful skinny queen.. How must it be to have such a perfect figure? For such an elegant looking insect, you'd think they'd be agile, but I've had these guys just. come at my face. They have collided with me, though they're not alone in that. Too many wasps have crashed into my face. How would you feel if you turned around and immediately received a face full of WASP?

Circles!! Curling up into a ball is this caterpillar's main defense mechanism, which doesn't really work well on humans... I find their patterns quite pretty, and they have lots of individual variation! They get their common (and scientific) name from their adult form, which is an almost patternless light beige.

Here I am again, filling my blog with damselflies... Update on these guys: the males are STILL brown. It's been 3 weeks!!! When will they turn purple?? They look nice brown as well, but they're not even the pretty brown they get when they're mature. When fully adult, females will become a nice golden brown and males become a vibrant violet, both having black patterning as well. It looks gorgeous, but right now all of them are this sad, pale brown. The day I see a purple male I am going to jump for joy and scare it away lol.
