oh absolutely! and it's a topic I'd love to talk about for a sec lol~

i love that uncomfortable art exists, and i think it serves an important purpose in helping us confront important topics through fiction -- and I like what this modder is doing because I think that Persona (a series that revolves heavily around identity and the idea of a true self) is a great avenue to explore topics of gender. Modding is a type of transformative work, just like fanfiction is -- and like in fanfiction, there are a million different ways you can alter the source material depending on the sort of story you want to tell. It can be fluffy and self-indulgent, it can be an au that genderswaps a character and does nothing else, or it can be a version of the story that explores more realistic or uncomfortable topics if you want.

However, that's not necessarily the experience everyone is seeking when they look for a female protag mod -- not everyone wants the story to change, and not everyone is comfortable with misgendering in a game they're playing for fun. And with the model swap, I totally see how it would feel weird to have a dialogue about how a clearly feminine character looks super masculine or gets called he/him all the time.

It would be cool if there was another mod that meshed better with the fem model so that both could exist and serve separate purposes.

it's ultimately up to the modder what they're going to create, and they're under no obligation to make something that will appeal to everyone, especially since they're doing this for free. So when it comes down to whether to center player comfort or realism, it's honestly just a matter of taste. It depends on what kind of story you're trying to tell, y'know?

the different persona series femc mods are so funny when you line them all up next to each other

persona 4 femc mod: it works for the full game, but for some reason, everyone's kind of a dick in this mod

persona 5 femc mod: the mod maker just drops an update twice a year and disappears but the update is fucking great

persona 3 femc mod: everyone's going insane with weekly updates. did you know that they edited the text for the different languages in the game. they changed the pencil case andpen. they added an otome game to the arcade. they--

persona 5 beta femc mod: they're trying to be the new persona 3 femc mod but it's super early in development. also girl your hair is a tomato

lmao the tomato hair comment is so real 😭 i do think she's really cute though lol, and i love the concept art she's based on~

I've seen bits and pieces of all of these, but only played with the reload one, and even then just a little bit. I may try out the one for 4 when i eventually play that one though!!

ohhh okay. i can kind of understand the intention there then? it makes sense now, knowing the script edits & model edits are separate things.

Without editing the model to look more feminine, it does seem like a more accurate take on living in a small town as a gender non-conforming person. I can't personally speak to what that's like in Japan, but I know how small towns can be in the U.S. at least. So i get what they're probably going for there, and it is kinda interesting, if a bit jarring at first without context.

It's an interesting way to make the mc's gender topical rather than just a casual or cosmetic change. though it is maybe a little uncomfortable as well, it feels like there's a point to it at least rather than just. random he/him-ing out of nowhere.

one of the funniest things about game 1 is that it's ridiculously easy to accidentally get into a love triangle over a guy who isn't the one you're pursuing so you're just like. okay, whatever, and then in year three the girl will be like "i've won, i've started dating him" but you just go I DIDNT WANT HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE

lmaooooo these girls are fighting battles that don't exist 😭

it would be cool if there was like a matchmaking/ally/wingman option or something where you could let her know you're not into him and kinda help her out or something instead of automatically competing by default lol.

game i'm working on is just "this dating sim crashed and glitchedand everyone got turned into glitch creatures except for this one background character and some suspicious guy she found, now it's up to them to turn this horror game back into a dating sim."

except as u go on it becomes "none of the love interests enjoy being forced into their roles but they all feel too much social pressure to actually stop or bring it up with the others"

ooooooh that sounds cool!

it seems like a concept that would lead into a lot of interesting discussions around the characters, especially regarding different tropes and character archetypes that they're expected to conform to!

genre subversions of dating sims by people who don't understand dating sims are just like. "wow isn't it so pathetic that you're playing this instead of getting a real relationship?" (i don't know where "dating sim that becomes a horror game" goes on the subversion scale)

meanwhile i haven't seen one that is made by someone who loves the genre. i am worried that my "what if the love interests hated being in the game but it's because the script is too restrictive" is too mean to dating sims. i swear using a dating sim script as a metaphor for being forced into certain kinds of femininity is NOT reflective of my views of dating sims it's FINE to play dating sims--

Yeah, I agree~ I would say that the "secretly a horror game" twist kinda depends on the game and how it treats its characters. Like, Hatoful Boyfriend has a neat twist to it while still feeling like it treats its characters and story with love, so I was honestly a little surprised to find out its creator doesn't play otome at all. I haven't play DDLC personally, but I've heard a similar sort of story about its creator I think? I feel like so many people set out to subvert the dating sim genre specifically because they think of it as a joke or because they think it's so easy to replicate without any experience.

I love genre subversions, so I would love to see a good one in the otome genre. BUT~ In response to your other point, I also think that being critical of a genre you like and/or using that genre to make a critique of something like societal standards for femininity & such doesn't necessarily come across as hateful to the genre. In fact, I think that really good genre subversions DO use the genre conventions to make a critique of something (whether it's a critique of society or of the genre itself) because that's what makes the subversion interesting.

I'm gonna use one of my favorite genre subversions as an example real quick: The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals is a great twist on the genre conventions that exist in musical theatre as a medium, and it uses its subversion to make a critique about conformity through its main metaphor (ie: an alien hivemind makes people sing and dance and the show's hero is the one guy who hates musicals). It's a great horror-comedy that's clearly made by people who love musicals, even if its protagonist hates them and there are important plot reasons for why you really don't want your favorite characters to be singing.

BUT!! The important thing is that while it subverts expectations for what you'd expect from a musical and uses the songs & hivemind as a metaphor for enforced conformity, the show never makes the audience feel stupid for liking the genre. It's campy, and it's silly, and the main character is the voice of dissent, but it doesn't leave you with a feeling that the genre as a whole is stupid or bad, or that you're stupid for liking it. Because it's made out of love for the genre. Which is the main thing I think.

It's really important for these types of stories to critique the right things. There has to be more thought put into it than just "look at this genre, isn't it weird/stupid/bad? well we're gonna change things and be Not-Like-Those-Other-Things because we're the Cool/Edgy/Ironic Take on this genre!!" (ie: don't critique the audience or make them feel bad for enjoying the genre you chose. or do, but do it consciously and know that your audience is primarily going to be other people who dislike the genre -- which is probably why so many gag dating sims are popular since it's pretty common to look down on the genre). What I mean is, if the whole point of the critique is that the original genre is stupid, it's probably a bad and thoughtless critique.

But anywho, I think your critique is totally fine and really cool actually. It's okay to be mean to a genre you like as a form of critique, and I think it's really good actually to think deeper about the stories you love and consider them critically. The problems with genre subversion come up when people who don't really know or like the genre decide to subvert it just because they think poorly of it, y'know?

tmgs is responsible for me thinking too hard about "wouldn't it be fun to make a game where you experience what it's like to be a video game character as another character is the protagonist trying to date you" but it's entirely because i assumed the love interests would give you their phone numbers at high enough affection so i just worked on my stats until one guy started asking my heroine out and i realized he was the protagonist to my heroine's love interest

lol that's really funny, but a totally reasonable assumption? like, it's way more normal (though significantly less fun) to get a phone number from the actual person than like, your weird little brother who stalks high school guys as a hobby or something lol.

but it's a really cute little info mechanic and i kinda love it just because it's funny~

it's cool to imagine turning the tables and not playing as the pursuer character! the concept kinda reminds me of this project:

I Just Want to be Single!! Season One on Steam
store.steampowered.com
The anti-dating sim where you make friends instead of girlfriends! Balance between heartbreak and heartache! Will you graduate without a sin

which is on my to-play list, but it's a genre twist where the mc doesn't want to date, so it's one of those "not quite dating sim" twist games.

personally, i like seeing variety in characters and in different games, so having a game where you're the one pursued sounds like a neat change of pace! (it kinda also reminds me of Hamefura lol since Kata is so unaware and all the active flirting is done by the harem 😭~ now that i think about it, that's kind of a trope i adore. loving harem pursues oblivious or uninterested girl lol)

i also love genre subversions and unique twists (especially when they're made by someone who truly loves the genre), so your idea sounds super cool!! that would be such a cute story!!! i'd love to hear more about it or play the game if you make it someday!

L and Light being canonically handcuffed together for MONTHS and nothing ever being stated or elaborated on about their living situation except for one line in the manga about how their shared room is unmonitored is actually amazing for those of us that are fucking delusional freaks. like that is the most batshit insane ship teasing I’ve ever seen and I jump for joy over it because im a sicko

my favourite fun fact is just that like. the handicraft club almost never lets you meet a love interest or best friend so the main reason people play it is just because, if you stick with the handicraft club for three years, there's a unique scene where you head out on the runway in a wedding dress and your love interest blushes madly over it lmao.

ohmygod???? that's literally so cute omg i'm 100% gonna have to play for that scene at some point~ it's super cool that there's hidden scenes like that omg

i'm already so excited about replaying this game and i'm still on my first route lmao

tmgs is so fun like you can have COMPLETELY different experiences across playthroughs based on who you did and didn't meet. you can be bffs with sudo run 1 and just NEVER MEET HER run 2. you can get into a love triangle one run or just completely avoid it by not meeting anyone next time. one guy can be the bane of your existence one run but you can hide from him the next time

also like!!! the cool thing is that there are conversations between characters you know or times when characters will comment on what job and/or club you're in or how you do at them. it's soooo cool

yeah it seems really cool with all the random events!

I'm kinda hoping to avoid the love triangle thing in my first run, but I did run into an event with Kijyou and Fuji together at the mall so that may lead to something later... As of right now he's the only guy I've put any time into, but if that fails I honestly won't be disappointed to just go all in on the tennis club and hanging out with Sudo instead lol~

It's really neat how much there is to explore! I kinda love having so many options and needing to strategize to succeed rather than just picking dialogue options (like, I love the VN format too of course, but this is super cool, and feels more gameplay-oriented lol)

OH yeah i forgot . if u want to pick up tmgs then you have to check with the info character to know the love interests + friends' birthdays and phone numbers. my first playthrough i didn't know so i just stumbled into a guy being the one pursuing my heroine lmaooo

oh cool thank you! i really appreciate the tips!! :) I'm super curious now lol, so i downloaded a rom of the first game today and I'm gonna try to play a little of it! :)

i'm playing persona 5 with the fem!joker mod because i am weird about games where the protag is a guy (would be a LONG rant to explain) but romancing ryuji is reminding me of how much i love ryuji lmao.

side note: i'm not in the fandom but i'm still aware that akechi/joker is the most popular ship but it's really funny to me because. my only experiences with persona 5 are this streamer's playthrough (he called ryuji best girl and always declared his love for ryuji but didn't even notice akechi was gay) and my own playthrough (romanced ryuji before even meeting akechi). as far as i'm concerned akechi is always pining for a protag who is Not Interested and Already Dating Ryuji

omg ok SO! I love Ryuji, that is my favorite guy <3 -- P5 is a game where I chose my fave early and it just never changed for the whole game. Love him lol <3

I played royal on switch, so no mods for me, but the fem joker one definitely looks cool! I would have loved to romance Ryuji as part of the game lol. I chose not to have Joker date anyone in my playthrough just bc it didn't feel natural to me.

Joker/Akechi is a great ship narratively, just because character foils are like that sometimes lmao, and I do really like it, but!! I definitely love Pegoryu too <3 -- The two ships kinda serve different purposes imo -- Ryuji is the cute boyfriend that Joker gets to have a sweet and happy relationship with, and Akechi is the guy he's undeniably intertwined with in an obsessive, dramatic, and kinda tragic way, which is a dynamic that I honestly can't get enough of lol. So I love both for different reasons.

Also I highly recommend playing the FemC route in P3 Portable if you haven't already! It's a great way to experience the story, and she has some great social links (Saori, my beloved 😭💖).
