“I like how hairy you are.”

Oscar says this on a late Monday while they are drinking a sponsor's wine on the couch of Oscar’s living room. Carlos’ sister Blanca is babysitting Catalina, she threw them out of Carlos’ house, saying they should enjoy a night alone, have a nice dinner together, especially since Oscar has 3 weeks free from racing.

And of course they decide to go to Oscar's apartment. It’s quiet, comfortable, without fans and cameras all around. They can just relax.

The noise from the city comes in with a summer night breeze through the open window. Carlos' gaze is locked on Oscar's red face, the latter is looking at his drink, eyes a bit unfocused.

‘I like how hairy you are.’ Did he really just say that?

“You're already drunk, huh? I'll go grab us some snacks-” he says while getting up but Oscar's stops him.

“I know it's weird to hear that from a bloke, I just had this feeling that I needed to tell you.” Oscar's eyes met him for a second before going back to his glass. “Cheese would be nice though.”

Carlos has no clue what face he is making when he gets to the fridge. He has been dealing with odd thoughts about the Aussie for a while, and ignoring it isn't easy since Oscar is around him almost every week.

As he opens the cheese drawer realizes how warm his cheeks are, how his heart is beating faster. He grabs 5 ziploc bags without looking, grasps a knife and a board and walks back to Oscar. His mind is trying to make sense of it all.

You mean my facial hair? Are you making fun of me like Charles did? Calling me Chewbacca? Is it because you don't have body hair? Do you shave them off? Wax?... Is it a specific place that you like? My arms? My hands ? or…? But also, why??

As he walks back he sees Oscar's glass is on the coffee table, he is still on the couch but now his eyes are hidden behind the heels of his hands and even in the dimmed yellow lights Carlos can see the red that travels from one cheek to the other.

He settles the board on the coffee table and keeps himself busy with the bags and the knife while sitting on the floor. He doesn't trust himself to sit by the other's side right now.

He hears Oscar shuffle around, taking off his hoodie then kneeling by his side asking about what he brought. Carlos explains each one after opening the ziplock and unwrapping the aluminum foil and setting it on the board.

“Oh, I got the salami by accident, uh Can we have it?”

“Yea, I'll go grab a knife to help you-”

He is trying to run away.

“No need, just…stay here. We need to talk. I want to understand-”

“We don't need to talk about it, I can leave if you want.”

“No. We will talk. Where did that come from?”

Oscar sighs. “I was talking with Charles during the Australian Grand Prix and he commented about having to get wax due to a clause in his contract with Ferrari. I asked him if it was specifically for him and he mentioned that you also had to do that. It got me confused, your arms and hands in all the marketing videos I saw were always like they are now. And your chest-”

“Wait a minute, you're talking too fast for me. First of all, you mean McLaren doesn't…?”

“There's no way someone would find that clause normal mate.”

There's a pause before Carlos says, “It was a toxic relationship, go on.”

“After that I couldn't stop thinking about how it looks on you.”

“So…you are jealous? McLaren doesn't make you shave, you just have no body hair or beard.”

“I have body hair, mate.”

“No you don't, I have seen you with only underwear before. When you forget to bring clothes to the bathroom to shower. And there's also rare pictures of you shirtless online. Your legs are hairy but that's it, no?”

Shit, now his face is going scarlet.

He just told Oscar he searched those kinds of pictures of him online.

Oscar’s face is no better, he shoves a piece of cheese in his mouth to avoid saying anything. The Aussie pours more wine for the both of them as he swallows whatever cheese it was, too nervous to think. They are both tense, he can feel that on his shoulders. As they eat a bit more in silence Carlos realizes a crucial detail of the story but as he opens his mouth Oscar stops him.

“This conversation is over.”

“Wait- No! Australian Grand Prix? Not Austria? You have been thinking about that since the first race of the season??”

“Mate! I- I don't know! Let's just eat, okay?”

He grabs the knife from Carlos's hands and starts to cut the salami.

Carlos lets his shoulders relax, feeling a bit defeated. He wants to understand if he is reading the situation right. As he organizes the cuts on the board perfectly and Oscar puts the knife down to start eating, Carlos lets his eyes wander on Oscar’s face. He is avoiding his gaze but that gives him an opportunity to catch in on the stubble of lighter hairs he has there, they are sitting so close that he can see the patchy parts on his cheeks. Maybe it's just my beard, then.

“You can grow a goatee like Lando, but not a full beard, yes?”

“It's not about that, Carlos.”

As their eyes meet, he takes a breath trying to calm his heart down, he knows that he wants to ask but isn't sure how. Too afraid to risk destroying whatever it is they have developed since he retired.

“Tell me what this is about, then.”

He's not brave enough.

Oscar runs both his hands on his hair then his face.

“You're gonna get Brie all over you.”

“I don't care about it right now mate…I think I'm attracted to…that.” He gestures with his hand, not helping much.

“To ‘that’?”

He hears how hard Oscar swallows, the Aussie grabbing his wine glass putting it to his lips before quietly replying. “...Yes.”

Carlos grabs his own glass, just to wet his lips, he knows that his next question is risky but he can't not know.

“Okay, then. Does that extend to the body the hairs are attached to or is it a weird fetish? I need to be fully sure what we are talking about.”

“I don't know, I never felt this before.” There's a pause.

“I… I never felt this for a man.”

“Oh.”

“Sorry. Forget about it.” They hear sirens go by the building and there's a faint smell of rain in the air as the silence stretches between them.

“Okay,” he says as he takes in a big breath. “I…I've felt the same before, for other men I mean. Be it actors or singers, to some mechanics I saw at race weeks to doctors but with you it's different.”

“Different?”

“They are just pleasant to look at. I feel like - like I need to be around you. I want to touch you, hold your hand, cuddle you. There are nights I think about kissing you but I also don't want to lose you if you don't feel the same. Catalina loves you, it would hurt her too much not having you around. It would also hurt me a lot.”

Oscar’s hand touches his cheek, pulling him in. “Yea, I feel the same.” he whispers.

“You need to prove it to me then.” Carlos’ has a shy smile on his face. “Kiss me, Oscar.” They meet halfway.
