I genuinely don’t understand the “anti rr anti pjo” cohort… like if you don’t like it don’t engage??? it’s not healthy to be a hater.

Don’t feel guilty about liking pjo it’s a fuckin great series. It’s only offensive to the most belligerent purity testers. Anyone with a brain can see that it’s a genuinely progressive series whose major theme is representation.

I swear these people would burn down a homeless shelter for not having authentic cultural foods and pat themselves on the back for striking back against culinary imperialism, nevermind the people left out in the cold. Like there are way bigger issues than a well intentioned middle aged white guy not writing a gay teenager to some chronically online blogger’s liking.

Yeah, bunch of things are wrong and offensive, but these books were also the entire childhood for some kids. For me, I read them while struggling with depression and they became a comfort. That's not to say there aren't flaws, there are several major flaws in the story.

But I see people bashing Solangelo shippers? Like, canon they weren't the best, but for me personally, Nico was the first character I could relate to. Gay, traumatized, religious trauma, familial issues... He could have been written better, especially his coming out, but I actually really like how the good fans have turned him into a better character. They gave characters depth and turned them into actual people instead of minor characters.

So fuck canon but seriously, can we just appreciate the literature we grew up with and stop bashing people who focus more on fanon or personal headcanons?

Like, I literally feel so guilty for being a fan of these series now because we have toxic fans and then the antis who, while they have valid points, forget how much the saga impacted loves positively. Like guys just be decent people and respect others opinions without making them hate themselves

His mom had been confused when Percy told her that Grover was coming with him and Annabeth on their cross country journey.

"You know you two don't need a chaperone, right?" She'd asked. Percy appreciated having a cool mom. She was cooler than him, really.

"Yeah, but it's about old times sake," Percy explained. "And he can smell monsters at a distance," he added, "and we need him to rent the car." Grover was thirty. They were not.

"Ah," his mom said, "that makes sense."

Grover's nose ended up being something of a liability. Or at least, a wrench in Annabeth's itinerary. But she was used to Percy and Grover, and, well, even herself, disrupting her own plans.

Annabeth had planned the whole trip of course. Every meal, every motel, every road side attraction she had penned down in her time table. And she'd found some really cool places along the way. There was one night they got to stay in an old train caboose. They were all pretty excited about it.

So it wasn't ideal when Grover yelled: "Stop!" At a volume Percy was tempted to call total pandemonium.

Thankfully that long stretch of county road on a late Sunday afternoon was empty. Percy was able to put on his blinker and pull over fast, while yelling "What? What? What?!" in harmony with his girlfriend.

"Animals in trouble," Grover said, before climbing out of the back.

"Well, let's go," Annabeth said, un-clicking her seat-belt and opening the door. Percy pouted. Their next motel was one of the few places they had the budget for two rooms, and he was hoping to get there sooner rather than later.

But he wasn't one to leave his two favorite people alone with the corn and whatever threat lurked in it. He took the keys out of the ignition and locked the door before following Grover and Annabeth.

Percy heard Annabeth's soft "aww," which mean baby animal close by before he heard the kitten squeaking for help.

And then he heard Grover's enraged: "Who would do this!?"

Percy looked at Annabeth, and saw the little gray kitten climbing her pant leg. She gently pulled it off of her, before cuddling it close.

The single kitten's cry for help was suddenly several kittens all looking to them. Percy counted seven -- no, eight -- no, nine. Nine. All little babies. All looking for help.

Annabeth and Grover looked back at him, and Percy didn't need an empathy link to know all nine were going in their car.

Not that he'd protest at all. He might be a bit burnt out on hero-ing, but kittens didn't count.

Before Percy could even really think, he was taking off his hoodie and gathering as many kittens as he could. Five, it turned out, would fit. Grover did the same. When they got back to the car, Annabeth was behind the wheel, and Percy and Grover were in the back with nine new babies.

"That's all of them, right?" Annabeth asked.

"They said three have already faded," Grover said, sadly. Annabeth looked about ready to cry, "but these are all the rest of them. They're from three litters."

"Poor things," Annabeth said. "We need to take them somewhere, and fast."

They dropped Grover off on the side of the road and drove about a mile up while he checked Google maps and called some other satyrs for help. The last thing they needed was Percy's proximity to a cellphone bringing a chimera down on their nine new babies.

"Good news," Grover said when they picked them back up, "there's a satyr nearby who fosters kittens. He can take them and get them to a vet."

The little gray one had fallen asleep in Percy's lap. It was the same beautiful dusty color as Annabeth's eyes. It had been the first one to call out for help, the brave one who was near the road, who climbed up Annabeth.

"All of them?" Percy asked, scratching the kitten behind its ears.

"Well," Grover said, "he has room for all nine. Unless ..."

Percy met Annabeth's eyes in the rear view mirror.

The gray kitten started purring in Percy's hand. Now he was pretty sure he was going to cry.

"Your friend will make sure they get good homes, right?" Percy asked.

"Yeah, of course," Grover promised. "Of course, you two would be a good home."

"You can't say shit like that," Annabeth said.

"And please, not when she's driving. She's only got her learners permit," Percy reminded Grover, wiping the tears from his own eyes.

"Wait, so letting you drive right now is super illegal?" Grover asked.

"Oh yeah, for sure," Annabeth said. "So don't make me cry."

"As protector of this cross country quest, I am going to need Percy to take over," Grover said. Annabeth put on her turn signal and pulled over.

There wasn't much farther to go to get to the satyr who would take the kittens. But Percy took over driving anyway. The little gray kitten screamed when he tried to move, though.

"She doesn't want you to leave," Grover said.

Percy pulled his arms into his hoodie so that he could turn it around, getting the hood in front. He plopped the kitten in his hood, and she stopped squealing.

"It's a girl?" Annabeth asked.

"That one is," Grover confirmed, petting the kitten between her ears. Percy looked at Annabeth, and he had a feeling they were on the same page. He looked at Grover, and Grover got the memo too. "She's decided you're her dad," he told Percy. Well, that did it.

"Well, good," Annabeth said, "because she's sticking with us."

"Does she have a name for Annabeth?" Percy asked. Nope had named him Alley Boy, so maybe this time she's be the one who --

"Mom, just mom," Grover said.

Annabeth cried for real that time. Percy wiped her tears, kissed her gently, hardly even annoyed that she didn't get a crappy nickname, before saying, "I better get us to this satyr fast, before we end up with nine kittens to take care of."

Neil Sapling actually had a very robust kitten room set up, and he seemed completely prepared to accommodate eight new babies into his life. He also made sure the one who had adopted Percy and Annabeth got fed, had food for the road, a litter box, a collar, a carrier, and good bed to sleep in. Although, she did prefer Percy's hood.

"She's a bit dirty," Neil told them, rubbing her down with some no-rinse shampoo quickly, so they could get back on the road. "She's actually a diluted tortie it looks like," he said, pointing to some spots of brown and white on her. "That's a rare coloring! Be careful though, she'll have an attitude."

"She's perfect," Annabeth said.

"Birds of a feather," Percy teased. Annabeth didn't even protest. She just nodded and picked up the little baby.

"Are you okay sticking with us?" Annabeth asked her.

"She said yes," Neil promised. "As long as I promise to find good homes for the rest of them. Which I will. I swear to Pan, your brothers and sisters are taken care of." Their kitten squeaked again. "Alright, she says she's ready to go then."

Percy plopped her in her little carrier, and they said good bye to the rest of the gang.

When they got back in the car, Annabeth took the front seat again, and let the kitten out to sit on her lap.

"Oh my god," she said, looking at the little thing, "we have a cat!"

"Never thought the two most dog people I've ever met in my life would have a cat," Grover said from the back.

"Well, with a lady so perfect, how could we not?" Percy asked, scratching under the baby's chin.

"Is that her name?" Annabeth asked. "Lady?"

"No," Grover said, "she's not a fan."

"Let's get back on the road," Percy said, "and see if we come up with something good."

"Does she have a name?" Annabeth asked Grover.

"She said no, but she'll let you know when she approves."

"Annabeth Junior," Annabeth suggested.

"I might want to name our human daughter that, try again," Percy said. Annabeth turned bright red and smiled, while Grover made a barfing noise in the back.

"What was the name of the cat who lived in your bodega?" Annabeth asked.

"Not sure," Percy confessed. "Everyone just kind of called her 'here kitty kitty,' or 'good girl.'"

"Well, 'good girl' won't work," Annabeth mumbled.

"Too much! I know too much about you both!" Grover said, obviously full of regrets.

Percy just laughed.

After a minute of uncomfortable quiet, Annabeth said, "What about 'Bodega'? Maybe 'Boo' for short?"

"Huh?" Percy said.

"Her name," Annabeth said. The kitten was fast asleep in her lap, purring as she rubbed her belly. "If we called her Bodega, you'd always have a Bodega cat, even our in California."

"I really like that," Percy said with a smile and a warm feeling in his chest. "Of course, it seems like it's up to her," Percy said, nodding towards the kitten.

"What do you think?" Annabeth whispered to her. "Do you like that name? Should we call you Boo?"

The kitten purred louder.

"She likes it," Grover confirmed.

Percy smiled wide and drove on towards their motel with his little bodega cat in tow.

I was re-reading the books (pjo,hoo) and the one parallel that I haven't been able to shake off is when during tlo, after rachel kisses Percy she tells him go be a hero for her and what not. And then in hoh when they're in tartarus annabeth tells Percy not to be a hero and wake her up.

Idk if this was intentional or not, but this just clearly shows why Percy and annabeth work. All Percy wanted was to not be the hero, to be normal. And even when he thought Rachel was giving him some semblance of normality during that part of his life, its Annabeth who's always known. She knew what he needed, what words he wanted to be told.

I seriously need more silly teenager in love annabeth like please give me annabeth making hers and percy's future house in the sims. give me annabeth writing percy's initials in the margin of her notes. give me annabeth hanging pictures of Percy on her wall and just smiling every time she looks at them. give me annabeth with a secret baby names list she's had for years. give me annabeth constantly kissing every inch of Percy’s face because she just loves him so much she can't help it. Just her being down bad and having the biggest crush on her boyfriend please.

So, I'm neutral on Percabeth, but this post kind of has a point.

Do you have any counter arguments for these points? I want to keep an open mind and you seem like you'd have some good arguments.

Anon, thank you for the ask. I typically don’t respond to requests that want me to talk about someone else’s post, but I have some serious points to make here and I mean business. I am not trying to start anything or call OP out; I am just stating my own personal interpretation of this scene, along with other quotes that I will inform you all of, and the possible issues brought up. Nobody go attack OP. They have a right to believe what they believe and to post what they want.

For those who don’t click the link (though I think you should), the original poster is discussing the scene in Chalice of the Gods where Annabeth pushes Percy off the cliff into the water. The post basically says that Annabeth endangered him by not telling him what was going to happen, pushed him into dirty, unsafe water, and is responsible for him getting harmed and bloodied up. Then they say that this is proof that Percabeth is an unhealthy relationship.

So, I have two major thoughts on this post, and one major problem with it.

My first thought: I think it goes back to the same thing that the judo flip does. Was it the best way to do things? No. But was she abusing him? No.

I feel like people keep trying to act as if Percy and Annabeth are regular human beings. They are not. Can we as a fandom PLEASE stop acting like they have similar experiences, expectations, and physical limitations as regular people? As if they don't almost die on a consistent basis? As if danger isn't part of their everyday life?

The words “push him off a cliff” are alarming to us because we imagine a giant mountainside and immediate death. But that was far from the case here. She pushed him off a little hillside ledge into some water. Could a regular human get hurt from that? Sure. But again: they are NOT human. They are half-god. They are hybrids—humanoids, even. They don't get hurt or feel pain like we do. How many freaking times have they been slammed into concrete walls by giants? Pounced on by huge mythical creatures? Slashed, stabbed, and wounded by vicious monsters? Stuff that would immediately kill any one of us? A LOT. And each time, they are fine.

He is not going to get hurt like we would, and since she's the same way, she knows that.

My second thought, which I cannot stress enough:

She pushed him... into WATER. You know, his godly element—the thing that, when he's in it, puts him at his most powerful state; the same thing that heals any injuries he has; the thing over which he has total control and in which he spends most of his time.

By pushing him into the water, Annabeth put him in the safest possible scenario. Are people not reading the scene? The only way Percy was going to complete the quest (and it had to be him who did it) AND beat the river god was by being in the water. It gives him control over the situation.

Now for my major problem: The original post gives false information and takes everything out of context.

If you actually read the book, you’ll see that Annabeth KNEW he would be able to breathe because the water was not dirty where she pushed him in. In fact, right before he goes in, Percy states that the water below was “clear as glass, free of snakes, and just begging to be canonballed into” (pg. 126). Need I say more? (Don’t worry, I’m about to.)

THEN he says, “On the downside, it was ringed by sheer cliffs, with no obvious way down unless I wanted to ride the rapids downriver through Serpent Town.” So he knew he needed to jump in because that was the safest way for him to get there.

THEN Annabeth suggests, “You could jump in with the staff,” and Percy quite literally says, “Sure,” so now Annabeth knows he’s willing to jump down into it. But then Percy follows with, “The problem is climbing back up.”

However, Annabeth, ever so prepared, pulls out a rope. So Percy does have a safe way back up. She’s got him.

Then Percy remembers the river god and suggests that they take some time and make a plan, but then, from afar, they hear Grover start playing music, which means the deadly snakes were now all after Grover. Percy then goes, “The clock has started. Grover is in trouble.” And Annabeth says, “Times up.” That’s when she pushes him over.

He was going to jump in no matter what. That WAS planned. They discussed it. They were going to discuss a plan for what would happen if the river god showed up, but since their best friend was now in danger and both of their priorities were to protect him, they did not have time to make a plan. So Annabeth put the plan in action KNOWING that he would be okay in the water.

The only reason he got hurt—AFTER he landed safely and completely unharmed in the water—was because the river god attacked him, which was going to happen regardless when he tried to mess with the river. And then guess what happens IMMEDIATELY after the river god hurts him? The water—that Annabeth pushed him into, mind you—HEALED him. Just like it always has. Just like Annabeth knew it would if something were to happen.

The original post did not give half the information. It made it seem like Percy had no idea what was going to happen and that they hadn’t discussed it at all. The original post tells everyone that the water was filthy and that Annabeth didn’t know if he could breathe in it. The original post tells everyone that Percy was harmed BECAUSE of the jump. The original post tells everyone that it’s Annabeth’s fault that the river god harmed Percy—none of which are the case at all. The post is just a bunch of false statements couple with out-of-context texts designed to manipulate people into feeling like they have to hate Annabeth Chase. It’s fine to not like Percabeth, but this post manipulates both the book and the viewers. Now, it’s fine to post opinions, but THIS aspect is not okay.

Now, could Annabeth have said, “Hurry! Jump!!”? Yes, she could have. That would have been the more gentle thing to do. But this was clearly a moment where a girlfriend thought it would be funny to push her boyfriend into some water—that he was about to dive into—instead of him jumping. No one here has ever pushed someone into a pool or off a diving board? Huh? I think it shows that their relationship is safe and comfortable enough that they can do things like that without it being a big deal. I feel like in most demigod relationships, this would not be seen as an issue. The only reason it seems to be on a larger scale here is because it's from a significant height, which again I'll remind you: doesn't get hurt easily + gets healed and powered by water = no injury happening. Annabeth also knew that Percy was comfortable jumping down into the water. It seems like a harmless situation to me. She made the decision knowing full well that he would be okay and safe because the water protects him. And all the negative and scary things that happened afterward were because the river god didn't want Percy to mess with the river. But Percy needed to mess with the river. Annabeth pushing him in did not cause that conflict.

Also, people are giving Percy no credit??? Why are we acting like he’s a weak little baby? This is Perseus Jackson, two-time Hero of Olympus, son of the brutal sea god. This guy is tough as nails, and Annabeth knows that and has full confidence in his abilities. People get mad when she is all soft and gentle with him because she’s “babying him,” but then when she treats him like an equal, capable demigod, they get mad because “she’s abusing him.” After she pushes him, Percy literally says that by doing it, Annabeth had “full confidence in [his] abilities” (pg. 128). She trusted that he could handle it because they are demigods and they HAVE to be able to handle things like this. She has seen him go through far, far worse than landing in some clean water and facing a minor god. She believes in him.

And isn't it somewhere around this time that Percy teaches Magnus, Annabeth's cousin, how to survive spontaneous deep plunges into icy cold water? Percy is such an expert on this that he teaches her cousin how to do it. Additionally, Percy and Annabeth quite literally fell into Tartarus—a slightly further drop than this—together, and survived because at the last minute they hit water, which protected Percy. And physically, he was fine then too. Plunging into water from heights is not a new experience for this dude. In fact, he's on the diving team at school—a little different, since that's coordinated, but still—the guy is very used to hitting water from heights. It's quite literally a daily thing for him. The only thing that shocked him here was the temperature of the water. And, mind you, this man has been to the bottom of the ocean. He recovered very quickly. Do people really think Annabeth pushed him in without the complete and utter certainty that he would be completely fine? I cannot stress how casual this is for him.

I would also like to add that Percy was in no way actually upset at her. A tad annoyed? Maybe, if you want to stretch things even more. But then, like, 2 seconds later after the river events, he's saying how cute she is, saying he loves her, kissing her, and they are laughing together. He is fine. They are fine. And if the roles were reversed and Annabeth was a daughter of the sea god and Percy affectionately pushed her off a ledge into some water, it still wouldn't be concerning.

I really do appreciate people like OP here wanting to call out harmful relationships in fiction, and I am never afraid to criticize Rick Riordan. I myself have said that I don't like how Annabeth acted in Wrath of the Triple Goddess (though I hold that against Rick, not Annabeth, since Rick openly admits he's writing them differently now to mirror the TV show versions). But Percy and Annabeth have consistently demonstrated themselves as mature, responsible, and kind human beings who love and support each other and make each other feel very safe and valued. Everyone is welcome to have their opinions and post whatever, but I really do think we should channel these types of discussions towards far more deserving issues, especially those that actually have factual reasoning behind them rather than false claims.

Why Annabeth would change her last name when she marries Percy🥰 even though she is a girl boss that we all know and love. Relying on another human being at times does not mean you’re not an independent slaying boss.

1. Yes, I do know that Annabeth is a very independent woman and struggles with permanent things. That being said, let’s look at the away Frederick CHASE has treated Annabeth. He emotionally abused her and neglected her so bad, at such a young age, that she didn’t only wish to run away when she was seven, she DID run away. I know when we were all kids we said we were gonna run away at some point, but who knows for how long Annabeth wanted to, until she COULD when she was seven. No kid, no matter the age, should every want to run away so bad that they actually do. Then when she was twelve she still didn’t WANT to take Percy’s advice to go back home, even after her dad made attempts to reach out to her. That’s how bad her trauma from him alone is. In my opinion, that’s no way to carry on your dad’s last name🤷‍♀️ He doesn’t deserve it. The mortal twins can have it, not the demigod Annabeth😉 I wouldn’t want to be connected to someone that emotionally destroyed me at a young age for the rest of my life.

2. The Jackson family, was a better family to her than the Chase family ever was. Let’s be real. We don’t have to headcannon that Sally loved Annabeth just as much as Percy. We know that’s true. When Percy was missing, Annabeth went over to comfort and share memories of Percy with her. If that wasn’t a bonding experience (along with the Titan’s Curse car ride), I don’t want is. Maybe it’s not the best bonding situation, but they became close none the less. Sally would also be 100% willing to take Annabeth in. At the wedding or any family bonding event, Sally would at first be kind to Frederick, until later when the family has to bond too much that Sally straight up roasts and picks at him with her momma bear instincts every chance she gets. Estelle would grow up in a place where Annabeth was a sister or someone who she always saw. Estelle’s monkey circle has Annabeth in it. And I don’t mean when a sibling gets a significant other kind of like/dislike, I mean sister/parental figure. Annabeth is a constant person in her life with how much she’s mentioned, loved, and around.

3. This is going to sound dumb but because she loves Percy. I know you don’t need to take on someone’s last name because you love them, but it really symbolizes it. Since Annabeth basically lets her little to no relationship with her dad fade away, she likes the idea of taking on the Jackson last name. Why wouldn’t she any way? She loves Percy with all of her heart, her loves his family like it’s her own, and her dad treated her like crap. She deserves to get the last name of the man she loves. Like I mentioned before, I know that Annabeth is a go getter, and a girl who doesn’t need a man, but nearly everyone, and I mean everyone, has tried their name with their crush’s last name. Whether it was as a joke or not, you’ve done it. I’m sure Annabeth is the same. I’m sure she likes the sound of it😉 But yeah, isn’t her love for Percy a good enough reason to change her last name, even if she is a girl boss?

When reading a book, you have to remember the context in which it was written; It is unfair and frankly illiterate behavior to justify your hatred for innocent writing by warping the context of a children’s book. Rick Riordan, as senseless as his modern characterizations of the PJO cast are, would not write one of his few romantic relationships involving a main character to be predatory. Young adult fantasy has a target audience of people as young as 12 years old, who (in most cases) would not be able to derive insightful commentary with such extreme and complex dynamics. Instead, the characters and relationships presented should follow a storyline that focuses on relatable teenage experiences with a narration that reflects adolescent thought processes. A pedophilic character and a predatory relationship dynamic is a trope that is generally considered too graphic to successfully write within a series such as Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Instead, the relationship between Calypso and Leo is supposed to be an optimistic end to two characters who have dealt with longstanding heartache and loneliness. It can be considered an undermining of satisfactory character development, as having a character who struggles with loneliness find peace in being alone in a world that emphasizes the absolute necessity of alloromantic relationships would be a unique ending to the story and important messaging that romantic relationships do not “fix” a person. However, bashing the route that the author decided to follow (which is understandable, as the success of his previous novels within fandoms was partially because of the popularity of the romantic relationship between Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase (or “Percabeth”)) is not intelligent media consumption.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians emphasizes an overarching message of disability, how a person may struggle with disability in a world that doesn’t accommodate them, and how disability limiting a person’s abilities does not limit their character. The series is fundamentally a commentary on disability and trauma, as it was written to engage and represent Rick Riordan’s son who struggled with ADHD and dyslexia. While our main cast similarly struggles with these same two disorders, characters like Tyson, Nico di Angelo, and Leo Valdez are written more intentionally to represent disabilities such as Down syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder respectively. As the series develops, we see themes of trauma and long-lasting consequences of psychological and emotional distress, as it is assumed that the audience ages with the series and can digest mature themes more successfully. Calypso, because of her centuries-long isolation and repeated heartbreak resulting from the only close relationships she manages to develop, struggles with abandonment issues. It is not a stretch to say she may also struggle with social cues, similar to how a neurodivergent person may struggle to understand what behaviors are appropriate or not. To call her “mean,” “toxic,” “abusive,” or anything along these lines undermines the trauma responses Rick has made the effort to represent. Instead, it stands to demonize people with mental illness, assuming that their struggles define who they are and the relationships they have. The treatment Calypso receives for her trauma-based behavior is not applied to the male cast of characters, assumedly because of the standards misogyny has created for all women, even fictional.

Referencing the aforementioned defense of her “bad” behavior, many have criticized Calypso because of the curse she unintentionally placed on Annabeth which is seen in the House of Hades.

“We did nothing, the demons said. Your beloved has unleashed a special curse—a bitter thought from someone you abandoned. You punished an innocent soul by leaving her in solitude. Now her most hateful wish has come to pass: Annabeth feels her despair. She, too, will perish alone and abandoned.” (House of Hades, pg. 235)

However, it should be considered that, before Annabeth and Percy Jackson (and Nico di Angelo), no demigod had traveled to Tartarus, never mind surviving it. The demon encountered by the duo was not a common enemy, but a monster that could only be encountered within such a deep part of the underworld. Calypso, rightful in her bitterness though not in who she blamed for it, could not have assumed that Annabeth would encounter the Arai and suffer at their hands. (Note: this is assuming that Calypso had intentionally placed this curse, as it is equally likely that it was an unintentional manifestation of negative emotions)

According to a poll conducted by the Tumblr blog riordanverse-ship-polls, 93.9% of 346 voters feel, neutral or positively towards the ship between Leo Valdez and Jason Grace. 49.4% of these voters state Valgrace as their OTP or one true pairing. Additionally, the Valgrace tag on Tumblr has 2.1 thousand followers, and the tag that marks a romantic relationship between the two Archive of Our Own has 1,651 fanfictions written (as of February 17, 2025). It is not unfair to assume that this pairing is popular within the fandom. This begs the question— how many people express hatred towards Calypso and her relationship with Leo Valdez because they would prefer a relationship between Leo and Jason? When scrolling through the Caleo tag on Tumblr, the Valgrace tag makes an impressive number of appearances. It is a common experience to see female characters hated in a movie, television show, book series, etc. because they “get in the way of” a ship between two men. It is a result of deeply rooted misogyny within fandom culture, which believes that male characters and relationships between men are inherently more complex than female characters and female relationships. This is not intended to be an absolute opinion, but instead a question that I ask every Valgrace shipper— are you holding female characters, specifically Calypso, to the same degree of morality that you hold the male characters?

I believe I have addressed the reoccurring arguments in opposition to the ship between Calypso and Leo Valdez from Rick Riordan’s “Hero of Olympus” series, and those who incorrectly label Calypso as a mean, toxic, or abusive character. Greek Mythology does not allow for characters to be strictly “good” or “bad,” but instead allows readers to see the complexity of each action and its consequence. Though written for a younger audience, the same level of understanding must be given to the characters of the Riordanverse series.

i don't believe the judo-flip was abusive because annabeth isn't abusive. abuse is characterized by a power imbalance of which can take many forms, but is its most noticable as physical. the judo-flip, while physically assertive, does not cultivate a power imbalance in their relationship, and even though annabeth follows it by threatening him to never abandon her again, she does not mean that literally, as percy was abducted and did not leave by choice. furthermore, and most importantly, percy's laughter in this scene demonstrates not only that he doesn't feel threatened or controlled, but understands the judo-flip was an expression of her pain and relief, not of aggression. to claim that annabeth's judo-flip of percy in 'the mark of athena' was an absuive act does not contexualize the situation to its entirety.

There's a lot to unpack here but I'll try my best.

This whole post is based on a number of misconceptions, including a common christocentric misconception that there is a “correct” or “canon” version of the ancient mythology. Which has NEVER been true: not then, and not now. It’s also based on the common but incorrect notion that Greece alone somehow has a monopoly over shared deities, which were worshipped for millennia over the whole of the Mediterranean and beyond.

To start: the fun part about mythology is that everyone tells their own version. Greek mythology is not Christianity: there’s no canon. There’s no “correct” version—they have always been diversely personified. Each individual village, town, and city might have their own roster of local gods, and their own versions of the common stories. If there are certain versions of the stories you prefer, that's awesome! But make no mistake—there’s no such thing as an “actual” Greek myth—just versions that have survived. Even within those stories, there are huge contradictions!!!

Even Homer and Hesiod, the oldest available (written) sources, disagree on a TON of stuff. Famously, Homer claimed Aphrodite was a daughter of Zeus, while Hesiod claimed she was born from sea foam. Hephaestus is another example: in Hesiod, Hera bore Hephaestus alone, as a sort of revenge for Zeus birthing Athena from his skull. In the Homeric tradition, Hephaestus is a son of Zeus. We're barely scratching the surface here. This is true of pretty much every Greek myth we have.

Literally, search any entry of William Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology. It's an extremely dated source (so much has happened both in archeology and scholarship since then; it literally predates Arthur Evans), but it's still very useful to see the pure number of variations in the stories, with reference to the original text. Nearly every entry details how different traditions were between authors.

If we have multiple sources for a story, those stories will have differences. Medea comes to mind. This is essential to understanding Greek mythology as the ancients themselves understood it—each storyteller had license to make the story their own. The way the gods were depicted and worshipped was different in different places and throughout time. It was never static, always changing. Importantly, NO ONE HAD OWNERSHIP OVER ANY OF THEM.

Riordan’s telling isn’t more or less valid than anyone else’s. And his version of the story doesn’t invalidate anyone else’s. If anything, Riordan fits perfectly into the millennia long tradition of remixing and adapting old myths into something new. He’s doing the exact same thing as Hesiod, Homer, and countless other forgotten storytellers of yore, who wove fantastic tales about heroes and gods (and often added their own spin). In this way, Riordan is authentically within the ancient tradition. His take isn't wrong—it's just different, and adapted to a modern, young audience.

So, this is the first major misconception addressed—that there is no canon, no correct version of the myths, and that storytellers were not only allowed to add their own spin, but expected. None of Rick’s changed would have been perceived as abnormal, incorrect, or in any way inappropriate. He is perfectly within the poetic tradition.

Let’s address the second major misconception: that Greeks (or anyone!) has ownership or authority over the ancient gods. By definition, you cannot own a god. They are pieces of culture, shared and disseminated through song, conquest, migration, and trade (particularly the trade of decorated amphorae). A hellenistic Greek might simultaneously worship Zeus, Ra, and Mithra. This would not have been abnormal—as armies moved into new territory, they would adopt and adapt the local gods. The locals would do the same with the new gods. This is a process called syncretism—the blending of different beliefs, practices, or ideas into a new whole—and it is central to Greek mythmaking (and ancient worship in general!). In fact, what Riordan does can very easily be considered a form of modern syncretism!

The gods themselves have NEVER been “Greek and only Greek.” They did not spring from the ground fully formed. They were passed down generationally by singers and storytellers, and predate any concept of “Greece” by millennia. They grew from a shared tradition of Proto-Indo-European stories and deities. From western Europe to India, you can find evidence of this shared origin. How can “Zeus” be Greek and only Greek, when he is derived from the deity “dyeus phter” (lit. Sky Father) shared among the whole Indo-European world? From Italy to India, identical formulas referring to him exist. “Zeus” as it were is simply one version of a SHARED story.

I can understand how it would be frustrating to get fandom stuff in a historical or religious tag, but this whole post is antithetical to how the ancient Greeks themselves viewed the gods. Ironically, you’ve adopted both a Christocentric and Eurocentric position—that there is a canon to ancient myth, and it’s the Greek one. Which is not at all how they thought or worshipped.

N.B. I am beyond tired of goyim using Jews and the Holocaust as rhetorical props. Don’t use Jews as fodder for your point. Keep us the fuck out of your mouth.

HOW RICK PORTRAYED THE GREEK GODS AND WHY IT WAS SO IMPORTANT

So people are going to notice that a lot of my complaints aren't just in PJO but extend to media portraying Greek Myths in general. But I want to focus on Percy Jackson and not other media, so I'm going to focus on Percy Jackson and not other media.

Starting off.................

The way Rick portrayed the Greek Gods was important because PJO was the most read book series that heavily centered around Greek Mythology he pretty much destroyed their images at the time.

Today, we have PJO fans running around having incorrect perceptions of the gods and flinging hate and abuse at the real Greek Gods while Greeks and Hellenistic Pagans have to suffer through all this bullshit.

In the very first book, WW2 is atrociously used as a plot point

Yes, that's right-Rick Riordan, beloved author of a bestselling franchise for children and adults alike, reduces WW2, one of the most bloody and complex conflicts in history with a multitude of a reasons for its existence, to a fight between fictional demigods of the Big Three simply to have a reason for the Big 3 not to have children.

Do you know how serious this is? Do you actually know how bad this is, though?

Millions of people even today are affected by the WW2 due to generational trauma and abusive parents. WW2 killed millions of soldiers and civilians alike, and the Holocaust was so horrible that some people would faint just reading about what happened.

I will not go into the bloody, gory details here, but if you still don't believe this, go search up WW2 and Holocaust torture and treatment of Jews and other minorities as well.

Jews today still have gaping holes in their family trees because of it. And to have Rick Riordan portray it in such a callous way, to make a literal Greek God sire war criminals in modern history, when there were other methods he could have used to intertwine the mythological world and demigods and history.........it makes you wonder what was running through his mind at the time.

There were so many other ways he could have portrayed the prophecy-make it so that Big 3 children were constantly causing natural disasters and fictional wars in the mythological world, not the real world, and constantly dividing the cabins at CHB. Maybe they had their own war parallel to WW2. There were so many ways to do this- and none of them had to do what was ultimately done.

PJO WWII IS THE ULTIMATE INSULT TO THE GREEKS

What makes this even WORSE is that during World War II, the Greeks were in fact part of the ALLIES.

The Allies were fighting against the Axis powers, the latter of which contained Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Japan.

When the Nazis invaded Greece-well, it's never a good thing for a country to be invaded by enemies during a time of war.

At least 250,000 people died during the Axis occupation and its Jewish community was pretty much killed off. And the country's economy and infrastructure were ruined quite horribly.

And generations of Greeks are traumatised because of this, even today. Not just Greeks-thousands of people. Millions of people all over the globe are still traumatized from this war, be it direct experience or generational trauma.

And to make ANCIENT GREEK GODS responsible for WWII is simply, totally and absolutely unforgivable on Rick Riordan's part.

To make the Greeks' enemies the sons of their ancient gods........no. Just no.

And yes, Hitler is a son of Hades in canon. Rick later changed it because of the backlash. He's absolutely disgusting.

Do NOT, under ANY circumstances whatsoever, take RICK RIORDAN'S portrayal of the Greek Gods as the REAL Greek Gods.

Never do that. That is the one thing that must not be done.

Hera doesn't just love perfect families. She literally lives in the most dysfunctional family to ever exist. And she loves you if you try. She really does.

Hades would not threaten to eternally torture literal children just because of what their parents did to him. His literal job is to uphold justice in the underworld, and sending a child to Tartarus just because her father angered him and he couldn't punish the father isn't justice now, is it?

Ares loves his children and as for why Rick made him hate them-

Rick has a hate boner against the war god, that I will swear on. Read this post and the explanation for why Rick shouldn't have done it.

And the gods are actively depicted as cruel, neglectful, abusive parents, when in the myths they are quite the opposite.

Real Aphrodite loves her son Aeneas and frequently comes to his aid on the battlefield. She also tells him to not marry a woman (TO GIVE UP LOVE, HER LITERAL DOMAIN) so that he can fulfil his destiny of becoming a king.

Real Ares loves all his children. He tries to avenge his son Cycnus when Heracles kills him with good reason for being a cruel tyrant-and they were even riding chariots together when Heracles came across them. He avenged his daughter even at the cost of being punished by Poseidon and Zeus, neither of whom liked him.

Now, what I want to tell you is that the PJO Greek Gods are Rick's interpretation of them.

An interpretation of a Greek God by a modern author (who isn't Greek, by the way, please take note) is not the same as the real Greek God. Please understand this and accordingly adjust your views.

This also goes for Madeline Miller, Rachel Smythe, etc.

And lastly, one of the most ironic things is that though Richard uses the Greek Gods in his books, he has never ever added a single Greek character in it.

I'm talking about a modern Greek demigod who comes from Greece. Imagine them teaching the other demigods Modern Greek and Greek culture, language and traditions!

It's very ironic that he includes Chinese, African and Native American culture in his works and then turns around and pretend that Greek culture doesn't exist.

The demigods are in Athens, but for how much time before they go back to America? Barely any at all. And nothing learnt about culture while they're there.

(No hate to his already shitty representation. I'm merely making a point that there should have been a Greek character in a book that heavily centers on Greek Gods and their children, even if it's in America.)

RICK DOESN'T USE GREEK CULTURE OR RELIGION AND IN FACT INSULTS GREECE IN HIS WORKS

So, if you've read the title, let me tell you something-

Do you know that Greek Gods are still worshipped?

Some of you do, some of you don't, but let me tell you, they are still worshipped.

And accordingly, you must respect them and their worshippers, just like you would do for Christians. You cannot maliciously ridicule and condemn Hellenistic Pagans and Greek Gods just because they are a minority.

And if you've read the myths and think that the Greek Gods being cruel......

They're not, actually. I mean, yes, you think they're cruel, but most of the myths aren't taken literally by Hellenistic Pagans.

What the Greek Gods do is supposed to be symbolic.

Hades kidnapping Persephone symbolises death ripping children from their grieving parents' arms. It's an explanation for the seasons and it finally represents the fact that daughters could be given away by their fathers with the mother having no say in it whatsoever.

Demeter's grief and her actually being able to do something about her daughter's marriage and Persephone being returned to her is supposed to be a comforting tale for grieving mothers who have lost their daughter.

Artemis' cruelty towards certain people? It represents the cruelty of nature towards humans and what it will do to humans if they provoke it.

Zeus' infidelity and abuse of his power? Well, it represents what kings do. Zeus represented the kings of Ancient Greece, and kings abused their power and had many mistresses besides having a wife.

Many Greek kings also claimed to sons of Zeus or descendants of the gods, so it the idea that Zeus had many affairs with ladies and princesses of royal lineages was conceived.

Also, Zeus is symbolic of storms. Storms are volatile and raging, and so was Zeus at times. He was a god of storms and as such symbolised them.

Hera punishing the mistresses and children in a jealous rage to bother Zeus? That's what queens did back in the day since they couldn't directly punish their husbands.

Dionysus being charming and fun but also being mad and wild? Well, he represents breaking away from social norms and going fully wild. Also, wine can make people fun and charming, but at the same time, it can turn people into mad, raging creatures.

The point is, most of what the Greek Gods did was symbolic to their domains. And no, contrary to popular thought, Greeks did not live in fear of their Gods striking them down every moment. In fact, many of them genuinely devotionally loved their gods.

And Greek Gods themselves are very kind and benevolent to their devotees, even today, as long as you don't provoke or seriously insult them. Just ask Hellenistic Pagans and you'll be surprised at the results. I'm serious.

The problem here is that we're trying to moralize divinity.

According to the Greeks, gods weren't humans. They were modelled after humans, but they were above humans and human flaws.

And the Abrahamic gods do terrible things too, but do we mock them? No, we don't, because their worshippers say that they are above humans and human flaws, so similarly, the Greek Gods are above humans and our flaws.

CONCLUSION

And no one cares about the fact that a guy is objectifying and making money off a culture all the while removing its significance and turning it into a joke.

Even though Greeks have a millennia old and rich culture, people are always bastardizing it. Non-Greeks really must stop doing this. It's very culturally disrespectful.

I've also seen grown adults saying that the Greek Gods are American so they're allowed to do what they want with them now, and that's absolutely disgusting. It's cultural appropriation, that's what it is. Do not condone it.

Ah, sorry, not conclusion-let me add one last thing here.

Rick Riordan has a series called Trials of Apollo in which Apollo is cast down to Earth as a human for the third time to defeat Python.

What I want to talk about here is Apollo's human name-Lester Papadopoulos.

Papadopoulos is a common Greek Christian surname that means 'son of a priest'. One of Apollo's domains in prophecy and he has many priests, so maybe this is a reference to that.

But what is most upsetting is that this name is used for comedy.

It's belittled, laughed at and ridiculed for its longevity and hard pronunciation when it is in fact a very normal Greek surname. Even if it's not an American surname, even if it doesn't sound normal and sounds ridiculous to you, it's not ridiculous to others and you should respect it.

Can you imagine how Greek people with that last name read the books and felt bad about their last name? Or felt furious. I know that I would be FURIOUS if my last name was used like that.

And the fact is that Papadopoulos isn't even that hard to pronounce! It's literally just 5 syllables that you can repeat a few times until it doesn't twist your tongue.

And if you can't repeat this simple name, then you need to go back to kindergarten. Hell, go back to preschool even.

And there are people who have the audacity to say that the Greek Gods belong to America and are American. Grown adults, actually, on Twitter, no less. Tweeting it for the whole world to see their absolute foolishness and audacity.

They're pretty tactless, huh?

The Greek Gods were and always will be GREEK. Foreigners are not their rightful descendants-the Greeks are (Greek immigrants included). I mean...........this is bizzarre.

To conclude, (really conclude this time) though it's a series heavily entwined with Greek Gods, the only Greek thing about the series is the Gods. There's no Greek culture, religion or language, and even the Greek Gods are heavily Americanised, which is pretty disappointing. I hope that other authors will do better handling the Greek Gods than Rick Riordan.

Lemme say that again: In 2013, it was expected that gay characters would be censored in children’s mass media.

Remember Korra? How she and Asami had to settle for ambiguous handholding rather than a kiss? That was fully a year after House of Hades came out. Nickelodeon said No Gays, the Children™ can’t handle that. Too risky. And people said man that stinks, but that’s how these things go in 2014 America.

Gay marriage was literally still illegal in the vast majority of US states. As of October 8th, 2013 (House of Hades release date) Gay Marriage was only a thing in thirteen fucking states. California had only legalized it that year.

Gay people were still very much on the fringes of society. It was an acceptable political position on both sides of the aisle to be against the existence and equal rights of gay people.

Nico was legitimately a landmark character in queer representation. To my knowledge, there wasn’t before an openly gay main character in a bestselling ya/middle grade fantasy fiction series. It simply was not a thing. They didn’t exist. They weren’t allowed to exist.

I remember people crying. Finally. It was a watershed moment. Kids all across the world finally got someone who represented them. It was such a big fucking deal. And it was controversial!!! Not for the reasons it is today, but because people thought gay kids having representation was inappropriate.

Is Nico’s coming out a great scene? No, these days it leaves a lot to be desired. It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination and I’m sure Rick wishes he could change it. But the fact that’s the case is a wonderful reflection of how far we’ve come.
