born in the wrong generation…
I tried putting them all in one photo but could only put 4 😅 I miss drawing my baby gemies. •Yellow Sapphire- She can't see the past nor the future, but she's really great at remembering even the tiniest details. So she's basically like a memory card. •Chrysolite- (She looks like the grinch in this drawing lol) A defective peridot who is hyper, cannot focus on a certain task, and is easily distracted. I don't really consider her defective since her hyper qualities makes her a keen, fast, active, and strong fighter. •Star Ruby- She's not your average ruby. She's a well-known and rare type of gem hence her name. Her beauty can easily distract any gem that sees her. She doesn't need a weapon, since she already has the power to glow bright as a blinding star that also emits an aura that can either control a gem/s or destroy them emotionally. •Cobalto Calcite- The illusionist. She's a great trickster who is also very clever in making traps. Don't be fooled, when you see her frowning she's actually smiling.

Moth Queen
lol strange even before I saw Steven Universe, when I was a kid I've already had in mind about making my own cartoon about gem people with powers...
Honestly the weirdest thing about the similarities between Steven Universe and Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous) isn’t even that they share oddly similar settings and premises, including:
genderless but feminine presenting humanoid aliens made of gems
who have superhuman strength and immortality
and are good at fighting except they use swords instead of guns or other advanced weaponry for whatever reason
and use these skills to fight off other aliens who periodically invade for mysterious reasons.
also the protagonist starts off as really useless and clumsy but grows stronger and more competent as the series progresses
oh and they both live in big fancy houses on a beach
Yet the weirdest thing about these two series is that judging by when they were released, they developed entirely independent of each other. Rebecca Sugar was already working on Steven Universe in 2011, and Houseki no Kuni was first released in 2012, which means Haruko Ichikawa was likely working on it at the same time. Both authors in two different countries had basically the same idea at around the same time, both entirely independent of the other’s influence. what the fuck

Here’s an advice I saw my dear friend Jon Dunham gave to a struggling artist. I thought I absolutely must share:
If you go out to find someone lost in the dark at night, you don’t go out immediately, but take a flashlight so that you may see, or else you may become lost and unable to find what you are looking for. In the same way when you start a painting, you give some thought to planning pre-emptively, paying attention to pre-defining your light sources, forms, and perspective.
When you are searching for someone with a flashlight at night, you don’t give up after just an hour and go home even if you haven’t found them. You keep going, unsure whether you will or not. Similarly, when painting, you should not expect to see significant results after a short period of time and effort, you need to finish what you start to get the most out of it.
When you are looking for someone, you don’t aimlessly cover the same square block over and over again, you spread out your search and go the distance. If you don’t do finished pieces, you are never learning how to do finished pieces, you are only practising the same steps over and over, figuratively walking in circles.
When you find the person you are looking for, you would not be affectless, you would feel relieved for you know that they are safe and that you no longer need to worry. When you finally finish the painting you are working on, you would not be affectless, you feel confident and proud in your work (no matter how briefly), for you know that you have made steps and have a definable, tangible depiction of your skill.
They!!
