When I got into this business, I had many doubts of my ability to help people lose weight, gain strength and feel better about themselves. In training school, it was simple; go to class, learn different training techniques and human anatomy, take exams and get certified. Working with actual people who are trusting you to assist them with changing their lifestyles for the better can be a huge task to undertake and something I take very seriously.
From being a spinning instructor, Zumba instructor, a dance instructor and now a veteran personal trainer of 16 or so years, I’ve found out that it’s a hell of a lot more than teaching people to eat right, pick up heavy shit and hold themselves accountable. At the end of the day, it’s about connection and vulnerability.
You can’t start any sort of process such as this without wading around in your own vulnerability and understanding that a lot of times you need to connect with someone else to be able to help you through it. I have to admit that I kind of hate it when people thank me, I mean, I understand the sentiment but I just guide my clients, they do the hard stuff.
At the end of the day, I don’t have to do this. I get to do this and right now, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you have good intentions and it backfires, you’re the bad guy. If you put yourself first, you’re the selfish person. No matter what your motivation for taking of yourself or others, it seems that a lot of the times, you’re the anti-hero in your story.
Even Taylor Swift fans realize that you need to take care of yourself first if you ever are going to help anybody else because if you start helping others before you have yourself in check, it’s a recipe for disaster.
Always keep in mind that caring for yourself and your priorities isn’t selfish but exactly the opposite. Addressing unfinished business and healing wounds is how we move on healthily in life so be sure to tie up those old ghosts before you move on to better things.

Damn I love your blog, right on, I get it.
You are too sweet, thank you very much!
Mirror, mirror on the wall….
Have you ever noticed someone or even you trying to match the same behaviors as someone you’re in close proximity with or even someone you are engaging with in a conversation? Well, you’re not crazy, this is actually pretty common. It’s called the Mirroring effect. In the world of psychology, the mirroring effect occurs when you or another individual matches or ‘mirrors’ the nonverbal gestures the other person is doing because they may find them desirable, they may want to get something from them, etc. Infants and children do this all the time and it’s the main way they learn during those early years. There are also different types of mirroring that counselors, therapists and people helping couples discover how to better communicate with one another and making the relationship stronger.
People also use mirroring in the gym, who knew???! No, not the kind where teens and young adults flex in the mirror and take selfies….that’s a whole other psychological issue. The type of mirroring the goes on in the gym is usually very subtle but I see it all the time. See that huge guy doing those curls over there?? His arms are huge and maybe if you do curls like him, your arms will become just as huge. Lifters and fitness people have this unconscious ballet where they look at someone they want to look like and pick up their mannerisms on how the perform certain exercises and even pick up their speech patterns, how they walk and interact with other men and women.
Don’t believe, I dare you to watch people the next time you visit your gym. You may be surprised by what you observe.

GOD I wish the minimum wage was a living wage.
I'm not flipping burgers, I'm cleaning litterboxes and doing basic vet care like checking weights, administering medicine, bathing, using IVs, keeping records, making lists, doing photography, and way way more. But the point is even if I was just cleaning litterboxes... I love the work. I wish I could pay rent. Shouldn't I be able to clean litterboxes and feed cats who were rescued from the streets and do that fulfilling wonderful work without wondering where I'm going to live?
Shouldn't someone be able to flip burgers, make art, clean up trash, care for the oceans, teach your children, or rescue animals without being forced to choose between their job and their bills?
What if I don't WANT to climb the ladder and use my degree and search for high stress high pay jobs in order to live? What if I want the high stress job of seeing a kitten crashing below survivable temperature and bringing them back from the brink of death, knowing that I'm the only thing standing between this homeless, unwanted kitten and an early grave?
Shouldn't that be enough? Shouldn't I be able to afford food and rent by doing that?
I don't want to work at a vet office that can give me steady pay increases. I want to work here, with cats who have no owners, nursing them back to health and helping pick their forever home. I want the infrastructure to support me in doing that. I want the laws to say I can and have programs in place to make it so my shelter CAN support me. I want rent to reflect wages. I want wages to reflect rent.
I want to help the world and be able to survive doing it. I want to thrive doing it. I want that for everyone.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and this is a great time to take a look at those things in your life that make you sad, depressed, anxious and angry. Some of things you can’t control BUT some of those things you CAN control. Those things you can do something about take time, commitment and accountability to ensure that you are doing yourself a positive service instead of a negative one. Having good intentions when it comes to some sort of major change in your life is great in theory however good intentions do not pay the bills, lose the weight for you or get out of a toxic relationship with someone. Sometimes people can’t see past the end of their noses and totally miss the bigger picture of taking care of your mental health. Your mental state controls 100% yourself as a person and needs nurturing and understanding. You can workout and get a terrific physique but if you aren’t right in your head, the effort is fruitless because although you appear attractive to the outside world, inside you’re holding yourself hostage and running from those toxic behaviors that need weeded out of your brain.
There’s no shame in admitting to yourself that you need help in the mental department and these days there are tons of resources around to get you started on your way to finding clarity and getting your mind back on track.
