there’s going to be another protest in moscow today. here are my posts about the recent protest and its terrifying consequences. i’d give more sources but they’re all in russian since rarely does western media care about us.
if you want to make me very happy, you can help an NGO that works around the clock to ensure that the people detained are relatively safe and protected, their names and offenses commited against them by authority agents are public, and they have legal protection in jails and in court. this is literally the only help these people are going to get as the federal and local government is actively imprisoning protesters and the cops break their limbs and heads.
please DONATE to OVD-Info. conversion rates turn even a small donation into a good sum. https://donate.ovdinfo.org/#page=e
there are other independent organizations and media outlets protecting and informing us that also need donations but they don’t have their donation pages in english. if you would like to help them anyway, please drop me a message.
please reblog.
Star systems follow a standard blueprint that keeps their orbits stable. They are organized in a hierarchical setup. What that means is that each set of orbits is on a different size scale. The sizes of stars’ orbits do not go 1-2-3, they go 1-10-100. Any one star is only really close to one other star. After that, other stars are much farther away.
Here is a cartoon of a hierarchical 8-star system:
This system is hierarchical because each close pair of stars (stars a and b, b and c, etc) is much closer to each other than any other stars (or pairs of stars). The separation between stars a and b is much smaller than the separation between stars a+b and c+d, which is much smaller than the separation between stars a+b+c+d and e+f+g+h. Let’s say that the separation between the closest binaries is 0.1 Astronomical Units, the separation between each pair of close binaries is 1 Astronomical Unit, and the separation between clumps of 4 stars is 10 Astronomical Units.
it’s a beautiful day on the Suez and you are a horrible boat
A lot of people use tumblr for a mix of personal posts and fandom/ aesthetic/ whatever else posts. And the funny thing about that is just, followers can just kinda come and go at random. They have no sense of what the continuity is with these personal posts. They’re joining spontaneously in the middle with no context of what the blogger has been blogging about for years. They just saw a a good piece of Gravity Falls fanart in the tag and hit follow.
From the blog owner’s perspective the personal posts make up one long coherent narrative about what’s been happening in their life, posts building on older posts, updates about changing schools and jobs and houses, personal threads of drama and conflict. Meanwhile unsuspecting Gravity Falls fan hits follow five years into the blog’s existence and the first thing on their dash is Update, part 47, yes my head is still stuck in the fence. good news is i can now reach the garden hose so i have a steady stream of water to lap up. Jonathon has not returned with the butter
honestly I wish I could dedicate myself to being a giant fucking inconvenience as much as the phantom of the opera did
I am mere centimeters away from writing a full on essay about how the “goblins are inherently antisemitic” myth spawned by this website propagates misinformation, displays a huge misunderstanding of what folklore is and does, and contributes to an environment that distracts people from how antisemitism actually operates and the ways in which it’s dangerously on the rise in our current climate–something which, surprise surprise, has almost nothing to do with little green fairy men
Living inside your head and constantly arguing about controversial topics online is terrible for you. Some people realize t hey are miserable and think “this is What’s Wrong With The [My Current Worldview]” and adopt a whole new worldview. And that won’t fix it. Extremely Online Communists, Extremely Online TradCaths, Extremely Online Centrists, Extremely Online Intersectional Feminists, Extremely Online Conservatives, Extremely Online Liberals, Extremely Online Anarchists, Extremely Online Libertarians, Extremely Online [Any Religious, Political or Philosophical Belief] are just going to be miserable. Some of these ideologies are worse than others in terms of the actual content of the belief system, but even if your core beliefs are compassionate and make sense, if you put them into “““practice”““ by INTERNET YELLING you are on a path of self-destruction.
I recommend filling your time with other things. Some of the best include true love (which does not necessarily have to be romantic), regular exercise (health permitting), helping others and appreciating your local birds.
(In the spirit of trying to only be Moderately Online, I will not respond publicly to any reblogs of this post, unless they are from @nostalgebraist-autoresponder. But it’s fine to reblog and to add your opinion, if you want.)
I'd elect you as president
This would indeed seem to require a substantial amount of coordination on the part of other candidates
Tonight, count the stars and remember a trailblazer.
We’re saddened by the passing of celebrated #HiddenFigures mathematician Katherine Johnson. She passed away at 101 years old.
An America hero, Johnson’s legacy of excellence broke down racial and social barriers while helping get our space agency off the ground.
Once a “human computer”, she famously calculated the flight trajectory for Alan Shepard, the first American in space.
And when we began to use electronic computers for calculations, astronaut John Glenn said that he’d trust the computers only after Johnson personally checked the math.
As a girl, Katherine Johnson counted everything. As a mathematician, her calculations proved critical to our early successes in space travel.
With slide rules and pencils, Katherine Johnson’s brilliant mind helped launch our nation into space. No longer a Hidden Figure, her bravery and commitment to excellence leaves an eternal legacy for us all.
“We will always have STEM with us. Some things will drop out of the public eye and will go away, but there will always be science, engineering and technology. And there will always, always be mathematics.” - Katherine Johnson 1918 -2020
May she rest in peace, and may her powerful legacy inspire generations to come! What does Katherine Johnson’s legacy mean to you? Share in the comments.

Build the shittiest thing possible. Build out of trash because all i have is trash. Trash materials, trash bodies, trash brain syndrome. Build in the gaps between storms of chronic pain. Build inside the storms.
HI
I am too sick to write this article. The act of writing about my injuries is like performing an interpretative dance after breaking nearly every bone in my body. When I sit down to edit this doc, my head starts aching like a capsule full of some corrosive fluid has dissolved and is leaking its contents. The mental haze builds until it becomes difficult to see the text, to form a thesis, to connect parts. They drop onto the page in fragments. This is the difficulty of writing about brain damage.
The last time I was in the New Inquiry, several years ago, I was being interviewed. I was visibly sick. I was in an abusive “community” that had destroyed my health with regular, sustained emotional abuse and neglect. Sleep-deprived, unable to take care of myself, my body was tearing itself apart. I was suicidal from the abuse, and I had an infected jaw that needed treatment.
