The Wiccans Glossary
Do you have any posts on Shadow People? I have heard different things about them and the internet doesnât help since each site I visit tells something different about them
This is gonna get me into some controversy and I donât care.
Shadowpeople are dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.
Now, there are a lot of shadow-type CREATURES that arenât dangerous, but are oftenmistaken as shadowpeople. I have friends who haveshadow-based familiars, various shadow spirit friends, and Iâve met severalshadow type fae, elementals, and other things. They were quite pleasant. Theyjust happened to be in the shape of a shadow.
Those are not Shadowpeopleâ˘.
You can argue all you want that youâve met kind shadowpeople. Iwill remain firm in my belief that those are not actual shadowpeople. Iâve hadpeople try and introduce me to their ânice shadowperson friendâ anditâs not a shadowperson at all. Just a spirit that happens to be in the shapeof a shadow.
Actual Shadowpeople:
are attracted to toxic environments
have a heavy (negative) effect on theemotions of everyone in the vicinity
feed on your aura/energy until youâre exhausted
are capable of very physicalpoltergeist activity
can make people physically and spiritually ill
in extreme cases can physically harm humans (scratches, bruises, etc.)
Every shadowperson Iâve encountered has been outright malicious and showed up to feed on toxic situations and make things worse. This holds true with the rest of my coven and other witchy/psychic circles Iâm in.
Do what you want in your practice, but I wonât help anyone work with shadowpeople because theyâre dangerous entities that I donât want to get tangled up with.
Itâs important to cleanse new crystals and stones as you obtain them. Cleansing removes the energy that crystals naturally pick up along the way before reaching you. This better attunes them to your personal health and well-being, which makes them more useful for metaphysical and healing purposes. Itâs also important to cleanse crystals after theyâve been used for meditation, stress relief, healing, emotional distress, and so on. Â
Methods for Cleansing Crystals
A very common method for cleansing and charging crystals is placing them in sunlight or moonlight for a set amount of time. Moonlight is generally the more gentle option, as sunlight can cause discoloring and fading in many types of crystals. This includes amethyst, turquoise, fluorite, rose quartz, opal, ametrine, aquamarine, celestite, prasiolite, kunzite, danburite, and dyed stones. Exposure to sunlight for these crystals should be kept to a minimum, ideally in indirect sunlight.
Water is another common method for cleansing. Cool water should always be used, never warm or hot. Tap water is fine, though many people prefer to use pure spring water. Rain water, moon water and salt water may also be used. A gentle rinsing is best. Submerging crystals in water should be avoided unless itâs a hard mineral.
Soft or porous minerals can be damaged or destroyed from water exposure, especially from salt water. Some examples are hematite, selenite, malachite, lapis lazuli, calcite, and halite. Click here for a chart that displays the Mohsâ Hardness for common minerals. Anything below 6.0 on the Mohsâ scale would best be kept away from water or moisture. Refer to this list for water soluble minerals.
Other methods of cleansing involve burying crystals in the earth for a few days to a week (very effective method), smoke cleansing with incense or an herbal stick, steam cleansing, sound cleansing (chanting, tuning forks), burying in dry sea salt (do not do this with soft minerals), and burying in dried herbs. Certain crystals and stones â such as hematite, citrine and clear quartz â may be used to cleanse other specimens.
Recharging Crystals
The purpose of recharging crystals is to replenish energy that may be lost when using them for healing, meditation or even just from sitting in a room. Again, sunlight and moonlight are common ways to do this. Other methods involve meditating with the crystal and using your own energy to charge the crystal, burying crystals in the earth, placing crystals next to a lit candle (but not too close), and placing them near thriving plants/trees/etc.
When to Cleanse and Charge Crystals
Once a week is best for most crystals that are used regularly in some way. If crystals are not used particularly often or at all, you can cleanse them every few months or not at all. Itâs up to you. If a crystal feels âoffâ or its energy seems weaker or less vibrant, itâs a good indication that it needs to be cleansed and charged.
Storing Crystals
Crystals should be kept in an area thatâs dry, clean and out of direct sunlight. Keep them away from heat sources, such as heaters, radiators, stoves, and vents. If you have a large collection, keep soft minerals separated from hard minerals to avoid chipping and scratching. Exposure to dust, moisture and salty air (common in coastal areas) may cause damage to certain minerals, so care should be taken in that respect. If possible, use boxes made of plastic or acid-free materials to prevent chemical reactions between the specimen and its container. Use soft fabrics to line boxes or containers that hold your crystals, to avoid surface damage.
Spirit work has always been a huge part of my life, ever since I was a wee two year old toddling around my grandmotherâs house. In my two decades of talking to the otherworldly, I have run into horrible spirits and gotten into toxic situations. Evil spirits (and morally grey ones) can and will deceive you. This is a list of signs that the spirit youâre interacting with is toxic or may hurt you.
This is also known as a sense of dread. Some spirits have heavier energies, but if you are feeling dread, trust your intuition and BANISH immediately. Cut all contact.
Some spirits have personal reasons to not give you their true name. This can be a red flag sometimes, but not all of the time. However, having a name that never stays the same is a red flag. Itâs a form of deceit and manipulation.Â
If a spirit comes to you like âYOU ARE THE MOST POWERFUL HUMAN EVER, I HAVE A MESSAGE FOR YOUâ or some over the top theatrical stuff, itâs usually a trick. Donât let them in your life. This isnât to say that a spirit coming to you and claiming to know you or want to help you is always bad, but be wary.
CW: assaulty, abusive stuff next
Some spirits, typically those that feed off of sexual energy, will put you in a haze. You will see no wrong in what they do. You may be very sexually attracted to them out of no where or somehow just give in to their advances. This can also take the form of unhealthy levels of dependence and even worship.
Just like humans, bad spirits want to isolate you and make you more vulnerable. You may find yourself getting into more fights with friends or family. You may have several falling outs and not know why. The spirit will literally be a voice just telling you everyone is horrible and against you.
This can be emotional, psychological, or physical. Scratches, bruises, bite marks, sore limbs, all of it can happen. They can break you down emotionally and break you psychologically. This is usually coupled with gaslighting.
These spirits know they can be banished, so they will make you think that youâre too weak to do so. They make you give in and give up.
Once they have enough of a hold on you, these spirits will literally take over your thoughts. They can even take over your words and actions. Switching is a common thing in spirit companionship, but non-consensual switching is a huge red flag.
Remember that you are always in control. You are the conjurer, you are the medium. No matter how powerful a spirit claims to be, you can always get rid of them. Banish them and ward yourself. Step away from spirit work and tune out of the other world until you recover. Focus on the mundane until you have healed.

Knot magic and witches ladder
With Samhain fast approaching the veil is thinning and the spirits are increasing. To honor and respect your ancestors as well as wayward spirits, here is a list of offerings appreciated by most spirits. You may find that a particular spirit asks for something specific so keep an open mind. Â
Light:Â The plane that the spirits are on is often confusing and difficult to navigate. Lighting candles is a good way to guide lost spirits through our realm.
Incense: This has a cleansing affect and often a pleasant smell. Friendly spirits will know they are safe in your home if you burn incense. Â
Milk and Honey:Â There are many foods you can leave out for spirits but milk and honey is always a winner in my experience.Â
Fresh Baked Breads and Pastries:Â This is especially good if you baked it yourself. If part of your offering involves time and effort, spirits will be grateful. This is a good way to show your care and respect.Â
Rosemary: This herb represents remembrance in the language of flowers. If there is a deceased relative you have on your mind, rosemary is a good offering. You can burn it, bake it into something, or just place it on your altar or outside your home.Â
Apples:Â Another name for Samhain is the Feast of Apples. This fruit is seen as food for the dead and makes a good offering on this holiday.Â
Pomegranates:Â This food is associated with death because of Persephoneâs descent to the underworld. If you practice Hellenistic witchcraft, this is an ideal offering.Â
Mulled Wine:Â Spiced wine is a symbol of Fall and Samhain and alcohol is often appreciated by spirits.
Fresh Food from Your Garden:Â This year Samhain falls on the Harvest Moon so it would be appropriate for you to offer your harvest to local spirits.Â
Iâm trying to figure out which deity I connect with the most and so I made this spread! Just focus on a deity of your choice and ask these questions!
1. What do you think of me?
2. What are the pros of our potential relationship?
3. What are the cons of our potential relationship?
4. How would we benefit each other?
5. Is this a good match?
Let me know how it goes if you use it! So far, Iâve used it for Artemis, Hades, Hecate, and Selene and itâs been really interesting. Also, sometimes they will have more than one card for the first question. Just follow your intuition and good luck!
