” tyuran said: I want to know everything! But I guess that’s… not… possible. No but seriously my familiarity with your headworlds is really low so a general overview would be nice (if that is even a thing that is possible and you don’t mind giving one)?”
Let’s see… I really only have about 3 stories (is that only or “only”?); also had some neat collaborations in the past that fell apart unfortunately.
My elfy story is called The Last Paladin (original I know, but it stuck). I started writing about it when I was 14ish and was obsessed with Zelda and Elfquest- I can’t really abide elves in most fantasy, they aren’t badass enough for my taste. Also all-beautiful all-immortal races are very annoying to me :( So I made the kind of elves I wanted to read about and draw- especially draw because POINTY EARS.
Errikan (chosen one, champion, world saviour, whathaveyou) is the title character. His sidekicks are Astral (bookworm, moral compass- the Hermione) and Naroth (cliche silent dark and brooding type); and his girlfriend is Lillia (a psychic priestess who sometimes comes along for ADVENTURE). They run around fighting evil, typical swashbuckling fantasy heroics.
I’d like to do some novels with illustrations (I had written quite a bit when I was younger but I scrapped it all cos it was terrible), and maybe an artbook as well. I was also really obsessed with Dinotopia when I was a kid so I’d love to do something similar. HOWEVER I’m not in a hurry to finish anything with this at all, it’s really a sandbox/playground to dump my art mojo.
My second story is about a seaplane pilot named Shae, the format of the titles were all going to be Shae Maxmason vs. _____ (The Bloodsucking Librarian, The Toxic Militia, The Human Neutron Bomb,10,000 Ninjas! Etc). She’s a courier on a mostly ocean planet with no continents so it’s plagued by super ultra hurricanes (Hyperstorms), but is otherwise kinda a beachy paradise colony planet. This is a pulpy junk-drawer manga-inspired story where I can just throw in lots of awesome things (ninjas, pirates, occult cults, worldwide government conspiracies, etc) and make it all fit because science fiction. And an excuse to have lots of people with ridiculous superpowers fighting all the damn time.
Shae has a secret (what? I can’t tell you, its a secret) (ok fine its a map on her body) that has tons of “special interest groups” fighting over her. She was sent a bodyguard from a shadowy organization called the Guild of Historians. That’s Felix (aka. Bloodsucking Librarian lol). He’s totally a vampire. Shae doesn’t know what the Guild’s plans for her are either, but she is forced to trust Flex because he keeps saving her life, how annoying.
I don’t know what to do with this story at all. In my head it HAS to be a tv show with a two season plot arc (I have it planned out and everything!) but… yeah…
Last story is my newest baby, I call it Amor Ex Machina (I will never not be gleeful over this title XD hee!). It’s… yeah… a girl/robot steampunk fairytale love story, leave me alone :p Edie is a mechanic in the royal military of a tiny kingdom who’s primary export is Giant Robots (of death). She finds discarded curious robot replica of a long-ago famous popstar (Casper) during one of her scavenging trips, she repairs him and he gives her music lessons X3 I’m working the hardest on this one right now because it’s not epicly long and I’d like to publish a book in the next few years hopefully :( I don’t have the best record on these things but I at least have a good plan for this one.
I have a couple of other ideas bouncing around but they are just random characters with vague, vague, nebulous world ideas surrounding them, no plot really. I may do more with them, I may not. Three stories is enough to keep me distracted and unfocused, don't you think?
tyuran answered your question: Are there any beloved stories/series you’ve read/watched that have heavily influenced the feel or content of any of your own ideas?
Definitely Dinotopia... and DEFINITELY everything Myst. Oh dear god Myst, Riven, URU, even the novels (tho I wasn't impressed with the... quality of writing... just the world itself is so so so so so so so wonderful). I replay all the games every few years because they are just so much everything I love. EVERYTHING. I loved it when I learned the D'ni civilization was in a cave in New Mexico, I love all the damn soundtracks, I love that the ten thousand year political history of the entire civilization is plotted out, I love the beautiful language, the base5 number system (which I will admit I did NOT solve in Riven on my own), and of course all the wonderful wonderful art that has gone into creating the cultures and the Ages. Nfffhfhfhhfhahajdfhkas. MYST.
hoss. (Taken with Instagram)
I love animated music videos and I love 70's inspired graphic design and I love clever combinations of 2D and 3D animation and I love this!
I saw this markers caddy at the craft store (Michaels) and immediately wondered if I could use it for not-markers... yes! Its a lil pricey but I got it on sale, and because I do crafts all over the place it was getting annoying to shuffle all my most used tools around in various bins and cans... Tombow makes this organizer too but it's 3 sections instead of 4, but it miiiight be more accessible if you can't shop at a Michaels. The inserts are removeable so I took one out to fit scissors, rotary cutter, brand new 20-32awg wire crimper (received in mail today YAY). I also have some squishy silicone brush holding trays (you can find em by searching for makeup brush holders on ebay or aliexpress) and THOSE inserts fit in there too! Perfect for smaller tools like tweezers and lead holder for my chalk pencil. I LOVE TOOLS. Swipe to the end to see the state of my desk and why I took photos of this on my bed :p https://www.instagram.com/p/B3XaDz3jGbk/?igshid=4nldle1icrsg
FFFF I guess I could... delete the door?? I haven't looked at the comic in months and the only page I saved before it was taken down was the one with the exterior of the manor, for reference. It looks like there's a door there but I suppose it could simply be a hole. OHGOD I have no idea I need more to go on HALP
WALTER MANOR?
Ok this is gonna be rambly bear with me. I don’t blab about what I post here usually cos portraits and clothes whatevs, self-explanatory. But ARCHITECTURE, OK. I am so happy with this you don’t even know. I’ve messed with sketchup a few times in the past with the intention of modeling locations in my stories but this is the first time I was motivated enough to power straight thru 3D’s infuriating learning curve (I still can’t function in Blender at ALL the interface makes me cry but I’ll keep trying). I traced the elevation from the comic and the rest has been a series of educated guesses from what I know about architecture. It’s pretty straightforward to figure out scale and floor locations based on window placement. I reeeally want to do the whole manor because it’s fun to think about all the wacky stuff that must be in it and I’m seriously looking forward to the comic for exactly this reason. Seriously, where is Bebop.
So YEAH I totally want to do the interior, etc, but that depends on what Bunny and Sam share with us. Hint hint.
Hint hint
do you by any chance draw inspiration from (amongst other things) jak and daxter and nickelodeon's avatar? i was just having a look at your deviantart and i really got a strong vibe that your work has been influenced by both these things...
Totally love them both so much omg. I rewatched all of Avatar on Netflix recently and all the nitpicks I had back when it was airing didn't even matter because as a complete story/world package its just SO quality and I'm still grateful for its existence and for helping to bring attention to fantasy based on non-european cultures. Love Legend of Korra too though I have been a bit frustrated with it. Industrialization of magic-based societies is MY MOST FAVORITE OF THINGS and my own fantasy story has been trying to address the political ramnifications of technology making magic use obsolete, since nonmagic users are traditionally an underclass blablabla man that finale tho. I dont even know.I have some old Jak & Daxter fanart on DA XD and I got the remastered collection for PS3, replaying it all, and I'm just in love again with everything uuuugh. The aesthetic is still just so unique and pushes all my happy buttons, its got everything I ever want in my games, and, well, makes me a little sad too because they just dont make em like this anymore. (Ratchet and Clank franchise is over now too, sob) Dont get me wrong I love Uncharted but Ill take Jak & his annoying talking animal sidekick over Nathan Drake, mass-murdering treasure hunter any day.
Oh lordy how did I not know you went to CMU?! You've been such a huge influence on me artistically; I think I had every single thing you'd ever posted on DA saved in a folder when I was in high school. I can't believe you went to CFA!Just so you know, nothing's changed (I'm in Drama, but its still a Fine Arts degree). I'm having a huge struggle finishing because I feel like the only thing I'm learning is how to be pretentious. My professor claims everything I draw is anime and unacceptable and I'm banned from using digital. The only medium we're allowed to use for renders is watercolor, which I despise with a passion. I get so caught up in trying not to fail out that I've been in an artistic rut for years. I'm sorry someone as talented as you was treated so terribly. It really seems like CMU can't appreciate anyone who deviates from their narrow worldview.I was in CS before I was in Drama and don't get me started on that....ug.
Well I gotta say I'm not exactly forthcoming on the internets about rough times in my life nor am I keen about turning this blog into incandescent rants about my thoughts on the structure of modern art schools... aha. But. That divide between fine/"high"/contemporary/SERIOUS art and design/commercial/art-as-trade/"low" art is unbridgeable in an academic setting. I certainly didn't know anything about any of this at the time, I'd already been burnt out from attending an extremely competitive high school, and I just didn't have the confidence to turn down such a great opportunity in order to find my own way (and find a school that was a better fit). The irony is still that I do take my art very seriously, just not in the omg-I-am-so-deep-and-challenging kind of way that professors want at critique time where developing any kind of technical skill is an afterthought. I had nothing against the art that goes in contemporary exhibits that make you feel like you're being trolled (if you don't find this pile of broken glass on the floor to be the most deep and mind-blowing work of the year you are a PHILISTINE) if you don't "get it" until I went to art school. Its the environment of insisting that true art is anything and everywhere and all points of view are valid when they clearly aren't just... made me so sour yep I'm ranting
Deep down I've always known what kind of artist I was/am and as a square peg being told I could fit into that round hole if I only tried harder!! well its no huge surprise that didn't work out. I do want to finish college someday but I'm interested in biology/medical illustration due to it being the best way to combine my love of art and science :D Also I just really really really want to take lifedrawing classes where you observe surgery instead of models!
I wouldn't take any of it back since I learned so much from it, I just also hope one day to have learning experiences that are hmmm... more enjoyable lol
Can you please have an about page somwhere? It's just that I'm nosy and I'd like to know things. For example, how old are you? Do you have a day job? Do you draw a comic or just random art things? (Both are good). I'm only interested because you're art's so pwetty :3, so please take this comment/these questions in the least creepy way possible!
I'm so comfortable under my internet rock! A long time ago I used to be super open about my life but I hate to admit it was cos my life was boring as hell. It hasn't been boring in a looong time... but its not in a fun way that I want to share... Hmm. I'm 26. I don't draw random art things but I don't draw a comic either (though I have a story I am writing to be a comic, the rest of my stories aren't, my ideas for their formats vary). I am... looking for a day job AHAHaha man I am such a starving artist cliche right now.
IS THIS SATISFACTORY cos that's all you're getting :)
questionstar.org & questionstar@deviantart. I like to make art, friends, costumes, trouble, and history this is an art/creativity/rambling blog where I complain about art more often than I actually post it!
